In terms of career rushing yards, he's right. Curtis Martin is 4th all-time, and Jerome Bettis is 5th all-time.

Don't group me as a "hater", I have been for the LJ signing as soon as it happened. You can disagree, with it but the statistics are pretty clear cut for 30 year old rushers.

I know that there are plenty of 30 year old receivers who have been productive. You missed my point. You gave 6 examples of runningbacks who had a good season at 30 or older. One is the all time leading rusher in the league and two of the others are in the top 5 of ALL TIME.

I would not put Martin or Bettis in an all time top 10 either. Football is a sport where the record book is not really the final say on who was best. For instance i think most people would agree that Emmit Smith was not the best RB of all time even though he holds the record. I have easily seen more then 10 RB's in my lifetime that I think are better then Martin & Bettis. They were durable and played well for a long time but many other RB's were better IMO.

We could bring in Sean Alexander (again) and complete the jeopardy category: Running Backs Who Were Good in 2006. I still think we should take Clausen/Bradford first if they are available, take all O-Linemen the rest of the way unless a really good RB/CB falls to us and assess those problems next year. This is the kind of deal your FO makes when you draft a rookie to develop at the spot, or a proven running back could be the last piece to becoming a contender. This is a rebuilding year and a signing like this is not necessary.

But again, he was right in terms of them statistically being 4th and 5th best all time. And the fact that they were able to play consistently well for so long shouldn't be dismissed.

How does signing Johnson prevent us from drafting a runningback? LJ is a bridge from Portis to our next long term runningback (s).

So you think Mike and Bruce were watching film from Larry's 1700 yard seasons instead of Johnson's film from the last two years? Last year Johnson did nothing in KC. He went to Cincy and averaged 4.4 a carry and even broke the c-note once.

That is the problem around here. We are so used to complete f-ing imbeciles like Vinny and Zorn that we expect dysfunction.

When I said they were 4th and 5th all time it was referring to their rushing numbers. It is my fault for assuming that you could figure that out, I will never make that mistake again.

True he was right in that regard. They are definitely great players who played at a high level for a long time, but I just wouldn't rate them top 10 all time. It doesn't really matter though...the fact that they rank so high statistically still supports the original point that was made.

Johnson, 6-1 and 230 pounds, is a big, bruising back who has compiled 6,219 rushing yards and 55 touchdowns in eight seasons spent mostly with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Along the way, he earned two Pro Bowl berths and 2006 All-Pro accolades.

Johnson joins Clinton Portis, another two-time Pro Bowler, in the Redskins’ backfield.

Johnson, who grew up in Pomfret, Md., called the signing a "dream come true."

"Being from the Maryland area, [I] grew up watching the Redskins," Johnson said during a brief interview at Redskins Park on Friday. "That’s what was on the TV, the Redskins and Cowboys...There’s just so much history. I used to go to their camps--Gary Clark, Art Monk, all of those guys were there.

"It’s great to be in a city with all my family and friends and everybody I basically went to high school and college with that’s still down here. So it’s fun."

Added head coach Mike Shanahan: "We are excited to bring in a running back that has had so much success in this league. Larry is a physical runner who will be a great addition to our backfield."

Johnson, 30, played seven-and-a-half seasons with the Chiefs before he was released midseason last year. He joined the Cincinnati Bengals to close out the season.

In addition to his career rushing yards and touchdowns, Johnson has a 4.4 yards-per-carry average for his career.

As a receiver out of the backfield, he has caught 154 passes for 1,373 yards and six touchdowns.

Johnson has not been without some off-the-field issues in his career, but it’s hoped that he has put those incidents behind him as he returns to Washington.

Johnson entered the NFL as a first-round draft pick (27th overall) by the Chiefs in 2003. He played college football at Penn State.

Johnson had his two best NFL seasons in 2005-06, when he became just the third running back in NFL history to produce 1,750+ rushing yards in consecutive years.

Johnson owns the top two single-season rushing totals in Chiefs franchise history with 1,789 rushing yards in 2006 and 1,750 in 2005. His 1,789 rushing yards were a career high and his 416 rushing attempts that year marked an NFL single-season record.

In addition, Johnson has three of the top five single-game rushing marks in Chiefs history, including a 211-yard rushing performance at Houston on Nov. 20, 2005.

In 2005, Johnson rushed for 1,750 on 336 carries (5.2 yards-per-carry average) despite starting just nine games for the Chiefs.

This should give Portis a lighter workload, so we won't run him into the ground. This would be such a scary backfield if they were both in their prime though.
