Man look at how ugly these pro bowl jerseys were. Can't believe this was only 10 years ago. Who thought these were a good idea?

Redskins Insider - Your daily source for news and commentary on the Washington Redskins, by Jason Reid
I think anyone will do a better job than Hixon did. Our younger guys struggle to run crisp routes and create separation. That's on their coach IMHO, especially when Kelly and Thomas both committed themselves to get significantly better. Both guys stepped up and committed to put in the time and effort. Hopefully McCardell can help them graduate to the next level. |
Re: Coaching Staff update
I always wonder how much coaching really comes into play with recievers... not a perfect example, but when I was in HS and played Lacrosse, my coach never really spent much time with me. This was because I had above average physical ability and a good feel for the game. I was selected to 2 all conf teams in my junior and senior year from just learning what i could the first couple years I played and continued practice. Had he spent more time with me, would I have gotten better, I think so... but would it have been the difference from me going pro or just being a great HS player, I doubt it.

Re: Coaching Staff update
I think you have to place most of the blame directly on Thomas and Kelly for their rookie struggles. They clearly were not ready for the NFL mentally or physically speaking.
|
Re: Coaching Staff update
If a young rookie is not ready, then it is the WR coach's responsibility to identify that and get them ready. I am glad that the days of discussing Hixon's uselessness are finally behind us.
|
Re: Coaching Staff update
The McCardell hire seems a strange one to me.
As far as I can tell he has no coaching experience apart from the East-West game. In England, to be a soccer coach you have to pass exams before you can take a job. Is it the same in football or can you just retire one day and take up coaching the next without any training? |

To a degree yes, but a coach can't be with these guys 24/7. These 2 admitted to playing Mario Kart in their free time instead of studying their playbooks. At some point personal responsibility has to come in to play. |

I agree. DT especially could have used another year of college, he certainly didn't get it when he came in. MK, well with his injuries, and lack of prep was not a prime rookie candidate :( Regardless, I hope that between the couple years of maturity, and a more dynamic offense, these 2 guys prove to be huge Skins weapons in 2010. |

You'd think that they would pick a better game to waste their time if that is what they wanted to do. |

Not only his duty to get them ready but to be able to pick out the talent. It's all nice that McCardell went to summer camp with the Giants and I hope they taught him a lot, and I agree anyone should be better then Hixon since he has not shown he is qualified after 6 yrs or more but instead of going after a bonified, qualified, NFL WR coach who has proven himself in the NFL ranks...... we pick up an Ex-player? I'm not saying he doesn't know what he's doing as a player cause I think he was one of hte best players and even lobbied for us to pick him up when he was available but just because he is over qualified as a player does not mean he is a qualified person to be teaching other WR's. There is a lot more to the job then simply building a work out routine and making sure the players are keeping up with it. There is the issue of being able to spot talent in the college ranks and knowing if said talent will work in the scheme your running. Then there is the whole issue of being able to teach.... or get the information across to the players. I hope he come in and is an awsome WR coach. I hope he is able to give DT, MK, and MM the tools to get better. But the pick just doesn't give me the warm fuzzy feeling knowing we have someone in this position who has a great track record at coaching and developing WR talent. |

There are no better games than mario cart, they just don't exist. And to be fair I understand what they were going through, thats what all the guys on my freshman hall did instead of studying for a physics final. |

That's not even mentioning the fact that if he's here for any given time like Hixon was he as to be able to spot talent at the college level or be able to review who the scouts are looking into him having to work with. Why am I still thinking McCardell was kind of a bad apple. I may be thinking about Galloway but for some reason I keep thinking McCardell had his issues with his teams also? |
Re: Coaching Staff update
Look at the OL coach we hired. I again was one of the speculative minded people but after looking up his resume, I feel he most likely will do well. He has experience. He's been around the league. I usually worry about someone like that cause if they were so good why didn't teams simply pay to keep him. Instead he has bounced around. But there is a resume. One that on the surface appears impressive. Now think about McCardell. What part of this pick instills confidence that we will have a much improved WR corps next year? because the position coach has played the position before? nice.

McCardell is one of the good guys. |
Re: Coaching Staff update
I have my concerns with several of the coaching hires, but this is what most of this board has been screaming for : Football people (Allen/Shanahan) choosing their own people. I think we can confidently say this is Mike Shanahan's staff, from top to bottom. If it doesn't work, then the complaints will flow - but for this season at least, I will hold out my hopes that the minds making the decisions understand the football team needs better than I do.

Re: Coaching Staff update
I like the mix of this staff. It doesn't work to have a total allstar coaching staff IMO, too many ego's. This is a nice mix of Vet coaches in important areas, young playcallers, and new coaches that played the game at a high level. I think things are looking real good for the Skins right now.

No I like the mix too. I was not too excited about Haslett because whether he was DC or HC his defenses realy didn't fair well. I was not too excited about the OL coach only cause it seems he has been well traveled. To me that indicates he either didn't get along with piers or didn't do a good job. However his resume sounds good so hopefully he does well. Then there is this move picking up McCardell. In all the other instances the coaching staff has some sort of expierence coaching in the NFL and one can hope the chemistry works well and the coaching staff is one of the best jelled teams in the league. But I'm confused with McCardell. We pick up people who have not coached or held a bonified coaching positions and we make them offensive assistants or defensive assistants. I'm just baffled as to why we picked up someone who has no coaching expierence to coach a position we have had trouble kick starting? |
Re: Coaching Staff update
Coaches have to start somewhere, so why not McCardell who was a pro's pro at WR during his playing days? His lack of direct experience doesn't bother me all that much. Like some have said, we seem to have a nice mix on experience on the staff.
|
Re: Coaching Staff update
I'm sorry. I don't mean to be the negative nanny but for about 3 or more years I've been lobbying for the Skins to get rid of Hixon and hire a qualified applicant. The other staff members I didn't see as a problem.
It seems Shanahan has brought on board coach's he thinks will work out well for him and I hope McCardell will out perform for him, but I was looking forward to a more splashy move in a position in which we have lacked either talent, motivation, or coaching. |

Agree, I don't no to much about his history but i figure he's probably played for MS or MS has always liked him as a player. I'm in a wait and see mode on all our coaches. HTTR. |

Agreed. McCardell is a high-character guy who played the game at a high level. He was a very polished WR for a long time. Clearly he enjoys teaching now that he can no longer play. I like the hire a lot actually. Hey, it's not like we hired a head coach who had never been anything but a quarterback's coach. :) |

He should be a wealth of knowledge for our younger guys...I like this move more and more. ...oh yeah and he's NOT Stan Hixon :D |

From the DCPSR site, here is the whole coaching staff. I added their wikipedia link if they had one. I know each one has been discussed at the time it was announced, but what about as a whole staff. Who are you guys most excited about, who worries you the most?

His numbers at Houston are great, and I think coming into the NFC East he will bring us back to a level of respectability we haven't seen in a long time. Defensively, if Lou Spanos can bring that AFC North/Pittsburgh linebacker play to the Skins that would be Excellent. My concerns would be Foerster as the line coach, and the Slowick/Jackson defensive backfield set up. |

Re: Coaching Staff update
Solid staff all around. Good mix of experience and youth. I honestly don't have any major concerns right now, I'd rather wait to see how they come together before I judge where the strengths/weaknesses are. I will say one thing, I love how this current staff looks on paper compared to what we had under Zorn.

Re: Coaching Staff update
HEAD COACH.............Mike Shanahan - Significant upgrade over Zorn.
OFFENSIVE COORD....Kyle Shanahan - Significant upgrade. Best OC we've had in a long long time. OFFENSIVE LINE........Chris Foerster - Definitely a significant downgrade from Buges. He appears to have been our 3rd or 4th choice for the position. His lines have never had that great of success to my knowledge. RUNNING BACKS........Bobby Turner - Very solid hire. Definite upgrade. WIDE RECEIVERS.......Keenan McCardell - Why? He's unproven. he's replacing one of the worst assistant coaches on our former staff, but who's to say he's an upgrade over Hixon? I hope he was hired because Shanahan really felt he was the best man for the job, and not because he's all we could get. considering how long it took to fill the position, i'm not optomistic about our receivers this year. TIGHT ENDS...............Jon Embree - Meh. QUARTERBACKS.........Matt LaFleur - I was hopeful Meidt would get the job, but LaFleur has experience with Shanny and he shares the name of Sawyer's alter ego on Lost, so i'll give this move a thumbs up. OFFEN ASSISTANT......Sean McVey - Who? DEFENSIVE COORD.....Jim Haslett - Hate the hire. Of all the rumored replacements to Blache, he was the worst in my opinion. he's never had continued success as a DC, but perhaps he was able to convince Shanahan that he never was given the proper personnel. SECONDARY...............Bob Slowick - We all knew he was coming. I'd have rather kept Grey, but that might not have been a realistic option. SAFETIES...................Steven Jackson - why do we have a secondary coach and a safeties coach again? LINEBACKERS.............Lou Spanos - love it, especially if we're switching to a 3-4. if we're sticking with a 4-3, then i'd rather have not demoted Oli. DEFENSIVE LINE.........Jacob Burney - An upgrade for sure SPECIAL TEAMS..........Danny Smith - very pleased he was retained DEFENSIVE ASST........Kirk Olivadotti - very very glad we were able to retain him on staff. |

I think the issue with McCardell is we drafted him and he seemed a bust. Browns pick him up and he does ok. He wanted more money and he ended up in Tampa. After the SB year he wanted more money to play which they didn't want to part with so he ended up in San Diego. He had a pretty good career in San Diego. Bouncing around with him is not an issue for me. It's the fact he has no coaching expierence. Most coach's with no expierence become assistants first. But your right. My other concern was our OL coach being in several places. If he was any good wouldn't the team find a way to keep him? Hopefully as other have said this won't be an issue and all he's doing is teaching technique and Shanahan can get them moving. |

It's not certain that Foerster will be better than Buges but it's not certain that he will be worse, either. |

you're response to my post makes no sense. any time the team makes any sort of move, people are going to have opinions on it. do you feel we should all "wait and see" without having any feelings about any moves the skins ever make? if she skins signed terrell owens to a 8 year, 100MM contract, should we not have an opinion and just "wait and see" what happens? if the skins traded a 7th round pick to indy for peyton manning, should we surpress our excitement and take a "wait and see approach?" if we all waited 2 years after everything the skins did to express an opinion, this would be a very very boring place, dont you agree? |
