Hopefully we didn't let go the next John Harbaugh. Hopefully we just let go of Danny Smith the bubble gum smacking, wishy washy special teams coach. Side note, so does Lorenzo follow him to Pittsburgh since he's a FA? |

Why? Pretty sure it isn't the life's goal of any player in the league to be a superstar special-teamer. I am sure the guy wants to play on defense and he has a shot at that here. He's not going following his special team coach around. |

Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
Why on earth did we let him interview? Its a latteral move and Smith is one of the best special teams coaches in the league!
|
Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
Every year teams ask to interview Smith-including the Steelers-and every year we say no. This time we said yes. My guess is he gets an Assistant HC title slapped on as well
Also, looks like Rob Ryan and the Rams ultimately couldn't come to an agreement and he won't be headed to St Louis |
Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
Smoot any idea who our new ST coach will be?
I'll throw a name out there, Larry Izzo. |
Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
No idea. Haven't even been able to confirm yet if Smith is gone

Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
If you love someone...let them go?
Seriously though, maybe it's what Smith wants. Why not give him the opportunity to go home again? |

I guess he wouldnt have interviewed if he was happy here. He's been excellent for us for many years, so its a big loss for us, but he has the right to chose whatever job he wants. I just wish we could have found a way to make him want to stay. |

Why not give him the opportunity to go home again?
Danny Smith's ST units have performed well this season (past Cundiff), and I had no issues with him staying on as long as they continue to perform. If he wants to go and make some more coin, can't blame the guy. He can take that useless bum Banks with him while he's at it. |

The man obviously doesnt want to be a st coach his entire life, its the rite thing to do. |

Headline sums it up. An interesting nugget nonetheless. |
Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
Heard Smith's parents live their, and are not in the greatest of health?
Also, can Snyder then fire himself for letting himself hire Cerrato twice? |
Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
Speaking of Snyder, somebody wondered why people still believe Snyder was involved in football operations and my retort would be the following that was posted by LL/HTTR-24/7
Yep.. That is Snyder for you.. Cold one minute and hot the next. He went from cussing Shanahan out the monday after the bye week "Evaluation" talk to debating a extension 7 games later. The decision to stay with Haslett is a weak point, hope it doesn't cost the team next season.

Everything with this team is Snyders call at the end of the day.Owners are owners for a reason, they sit back until they don't want to sit back anymore.
So it makes me think that Haslett and other coaches are staying based off of Snyder's decision to keep them on or his reluctance to pay top dollar for alternatives. Now, he does mention Snyder not being involved in personnel decisions for the most part.
He is not really involved in too many personnel decisions.. Rare, but when he is upset it's known.
|
Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
Apparently Rob Ryan's "I will be out of work for 5 minutes" quote didn't pan out how he thought…. Shmuck
Rob Ryan won't be St. Louis Rams' defensive coordinator -- Jeff Fisher - ESPN |
Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
Gregg the Bounty Hunter and the Rams would have been a perfect fit for each other. Remember all of the dirty, cheap tactics they used against us this year? Granted they probably only went that far because the replacement refs were allowing them, but that's definitely a bunch of players who would have bought into Williams' "scheme".

Headline sums it up. An interesting nugget nonetheless.
Hilarious! I love it. Whatever reason Dan has for firing Vinny is a good one to me...although the axe came down about 10 years late.
Myers also reported that Jim Fassel was so convinced he was getting the job in early 2008 that “he started to gather his belongings in Phoenix for the move to Washington.” But fans were rebelling, and Zorn wound up with the gig.
Look everyone, it was OUR FAULT that Zorn was hired! I was for Fassel over Zorn. My choice was Gregg Williams at the time...I have to tell the truth! |
Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
I mean the truth is Snyder let Cerrato hire Zorn because Cerrato's ego was too fragile to handle an established HC
|
Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
Danny smith staying or leaving makes no difference to me. Maybe he can take banks with him too.
I'm in the same position as you. To me he seemed like a middle of the road ST coach. He definitely was not the worst but I have always felt we could be doing a LOT better. Almost happy he's gone. |

I'm sure your going to point to the word "established" but what about Gibbs? |
Re: Black Monday: NFL Coaches and Executives Carousel
I'm sure your going to point to the word "established" but what about Gibbs?
Well Gibbs' is unique. But the key difference is there is Cerrato wasn't in charge. After Gibbs left, Snyder put Cerrato in charge of all football operations. Made it his show to run to show that he could be the guy, not the foot soldier. But while most good managers want a strong team under them, Cerrato didn't, for fear that some would be good enough to eventually make Cerrato irrelevant. |

I dont know how he couldnt have had the foresight to realize that if he doesnt have a good coach, and strong personnel people, he wouldnt have a good team, and he'd lose his job. |

The CFL is probably where Zorn should have started his head coaching career, instead we let him coach us for two years.

Cerrato is not as dumb as people believe when it comes to straight scouting of players, but he's an extremely insecure, petty person. That's ultimately his true downfall |

And, in my experience, only someone with similar traits would hire that kind of executive for a senior position. So was he (is he) a reflection of his boss? |

Thanks for the great stuff SS, NCS.

No, not at all |

Cerrato IMO made alot of mistakes over a decade. Alot of his quotes from that book just lead to more questions. Why do the skins always say things that just make you scratch your head? Hire a friggin lawyer and pretend that your always talking to the Cops. |
