You are the second person today questioning whether signing bonuses count against the cap. Is there a new rule about signing bonuses that im missing?
No you are correct. Bonus(guaranteed) is not included in cap limitations.
No you are correct. Bonus(guaranteed) is not included in cap limitations.
Guaranteed bonus is included in the cap calculations, but it is spread out over the remaining years of the contract.

http://www.thewarpath.net/salary-cap-central/22635-the-warpath-presents-salary-cap-101-a.html

What are Signing Bonus Allocations?
- Signing bonus is guaranteed. It is usually received in a lump sum payment upon signing a new contract, though sometimes signing bonus payments are scheduled one or more years into the future. Signing bonus does not count in full against the salary cap in the year it is received. Instead, the signing bonus amount is allocated equally amongst the remaining years of the contract (6 years max). This is only for salary cap purposes; the player still receives the entire signing bonus amount up front. If the player is released or traded, any future signing bonus allocations accelerate to the present, and this amount will still count against the team's salary cap even though the player is no longer with the team. This is usually referred to as Dead Cap.

what are you talking about? If signing bonuses didnt count against the cap, then the redskins could just sign every big name free agent out there, give them a 30-50million dollar signing bonus, and pay the vet minimum, with only the vet minimum counting against the cap. There would be no purpose to the salary cap if signing bonuses didnt count against it.

Signing bonuses count against the cap. Teams just have the option of pro-rating the signing bonus over the length of the deal. Meaning, if its a 3 million signing bonus on a 3 year contract, teams have the option to split the bonus up so it only counts 1 million each year.
Almost every defense in the NFL is unique. Halls biggest problem is he bites on plays and lets players behind him... And hall got dragged by jake delhome, I will never forget that. He's a good tackler for a corner, but for a safety he's below average and running backs and tight ends would drag him. I think I would draft a safety who played safety in college and has experience playing safety and understands he can't let someone behind him. So agree to disagree. I don't see hall playing safety all that well, especially with how inconsistent he is and how often he gets beat by average receivers
I like the idea of DHall playing FS for Dallas.

Confirmed OT Jeremy Trueblood is visiting #Redskins this weekend. Eight-year vet, played 9 games last season, starting 1.

I like him but it makes ya wonder how AZ signed him & other teams passed. I like that we let him walk & top tier teams didn't seem to be overly interested.

1 more sign to say we are headed in the right direction.

Lorenzo Alexander's physical play on special teams will be missed. This is a big blow.

Niles Paul plays a similar style, would have been nice to gave both to kick some serious ass.

Indeed. Zoe is a great locker room guy, ST stud and back-up/fill-in. He's the type you want for your championship run even though his play isn't necessarily integral to winning, if that makes sense.

Lame.

Gtothearry 03-13-2013 05:51 PM

I think Bryan Kehl will come back in & pick up where Zo left off. When he came back last year he was another player who made a difference on ST's.

I'm a fan of Kehl as a good role player. If he shows his potential (IMO), he could be a as good as Rob Jackson, but more in zone coverage (not as a push rusher).

Going to miss those big moments from Zo bringing the the wood. Don't blame him though, got to get paid.

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013

Its realy amazing what one year of winning does to the cost of your players. Zo and Golston got signed last year at or near mini deals. Now both are getting paid. Still not sure why we paid Golston what we did. And then Polumbus is probably going to get paid also.

NYCskinfan82 03-13-2013 06:12 PM

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013

I think other than Golston's signing bonus he could still be cut at a minimum cost to the Skins. I can't wait to see how Phillip Merling turns out.

I also do not want Polumbus to go.

Golston = back up money
Zo probably wanted starter money

Unfortunately the team doesn't have the luxury to keep a Pro Bowl special teams player when they are under the cap.

@HTTR24_7: RT @Manny_PPI: Interesting. RT @davidelfin @onemangang97 just told me that Cardinals gave him $9.5M, $3M guaranteed over 3 yrs.

Yeah that's starter money. He's not a starter in DC. Jack of all trades are rarely great at one thing.

I agree. I wish we could have kept him, but with the cap penalty, we couldn't have come close to that. Lorenzo's been giving us a hometown discount for years. He deserves to get paid. I'm happy for him.

artmonkforhallofamein07 03-13-2013 07:24 PM

Re: Official Redskins Free Agency Thread 2013

Even without the penalty that contract is to rich for Zo. He is great but I couldn't pay a special teams player and a solid backup.

We can replace him in the draft for much cheaper than that.
