not negotiating is being a piece of shit . . . I hope he blows out both knees and both ankles all at the same time this year.
I think Cousins is just maximizing his value. Nothing more than that. I know everyone wants to read into things but at the end of the day he just wants what he would be due under the tags. The Skins started this mess, KC is just playing the game the team started.
I agree with this. I really don't think KC fears a career ending injury, and so why shouldn't he play this year and use next year's tag as the starting point for negotiations. I think both sides had their specific concerns, and views, and in the two views don't align enough to get a deal done. I don't think it has a lot to do with where he wants to end up.

One last consideration, is a 6 year deal next year takes him to being 36. So it's going to cover his prime playing years. He simply wants to maximize that.

If no deal was in place by 4 I'd trade him to any team that offered a top 100 pick. Not saying any team will actually offer it, just saying if.

While I want the deal to happen...I think from a logic standpoint there is strong reasoning to not give Cousins 24-25 per, 55-80 guaranteed. There just is. The skins are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

I wonder if the offer leaks if it doesn't get done?

Fact of the matter is, this head coach did not draft him. But one of the guys that did draft him is now a head coach in San Francisco and has made no secret that he would like a reunion with Cousins.
On the flip side, 2 years ago Gruden put his neck on the line in that hours long meeting trying to convince Dan and Bruce that Cousins should be named the starter.

Im fine w Cousins playing on the tag this year, I wish we signed him to 16-20M last year but cest la vie.

Unless Cousins plays to an MVP level or we make a deep playoff run, I dont see Cousins value increasing.

I think this offseason, his value was at its highest and he failed to lock in a LTD. 50% chance injuries or decrease in production happen this year.
Common sense would also dictate that a player would take the security of a long term deal over the risk of playing on a one year deal.

As I mentioned before, if Cousins' camp doesn't value the security of a long term deal (which most players do), it is a lost bargaining chip for the Redskins.

While I do not believe the team is blameless, I do feel that this is either about Cousins not wanting to play here and/or being in for the money. If you have a player that doesn't value the security of a long term deal and doesn't want to play here and/or wants unrealistic money, how do you come to a compromise and a deal under those situations?
You just let him go and draft a qb. The guy choked when the season was on the line. All he had to do is win one of 3 games to get into the playoffs, with 2 of those teams being subpar and the other not having to win. You can't justify putting yourself in a position to having to let multiple good players go for a guy that hasn't really shown anything to warrant $25 million a year. The issue is moot as it seems that one or both parties don't want to have anything to do with the other after 2017.

Strong reasoning to not pay a guy you already paid $19m last year and are on the hook for $24m this? Not sure I'm seeing it.

Well. There was the Cardinals game, the Panthers game, and the Giants game. All three times setup for Cousins to prove the 'skins worthy of a playoff spot and him to solidify himself a franchise QB, and in all three games, he imploded. There was a lot riding on those games at the time, and I can see that being a point of resistance.

At the same time, Cousins is clearly the best QB the 'skins have had in a very long time. I think he will have the most solid team built around him in a very long time as well, so I think Cousins has a great chance to prove his worth this season.

Guess we'll know how it goes by 4:01pm.

Well then, why even bother giving him the tag? Just let him go for being a failure, then move on to plan B.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

If the man won't take anything less than every penny (his right to do) and/or doesn't want to be here, what is the point of keeping him around this year? Our chances of winning SB are extremely low, and I'd say damn near non existent with this cloud hanging over the team.

He's not going to accept any less next year and the situation will not be changed, except he'll be guaranteed even more money on either tag option.

I don't care if he's better than McCoy or Sudfeld. I'd enjoy the season more without this cloud over our heads.

My point is, there are just as many good reasons not to sign Cousins long term as there is to sign him long term. We, Redskins fans, are looking at the reasons to sign him, and those reasons make sense and are justifiable. But, there are plausible reasons not to sign him to a long term contract. The one year deals concede that Kirk Cousins is good and that good quarterbacks are not easily found. However, long term deals say he's good enough to win Super Bowls. If you don't truly believe that, why would you give the guy a long term deal?

If it is going to take 24M to sign him to a LTD and the tag is 24M, Im really starting to think the smart move is to not sign him to a LTD and let this year play out. See how he does without McVay and Jackson/Garcon.

Even if he plays like he has the last 2 years, his value as a 30 year old would stay in the 24M per range.

Agreed, assuming no deal, next year his position levels out with no FT numbers past next year. He likely will remain a top 11 qb, and will be paid by some team - maybe us - like where his value is at. (imo) Right now he wants to be paid long term at a point way above where his real value is.

Exactly, you already given him 45 million basically and could have been signed 2 years ago to a LT deal with this as the guaranteed money. Now, it's more like 55-70mil guaranteed to get it done.

Yes, but half of us were on board with the Redskins not signing Kirk Cousins to a LTD right after 2015. I'm pretty sure if we went back into those threads, more than half of us would have said the 'skins would have been crazy to sign Cousins to a huge deal after a half of a good 2015 campaign.

It's just what it is. Cousins bet on himself. The Redskins wanted to make sure he's worth the money. Cousins played pretty well in 2016, the 'skins are splitting hairs.

He's got about 12 more minutes to sign.

It's really really hard to trust Bruce Allen, but if he made this offer and KC declined. It very well means that KC doesn't want to be in DC and he has no plans to negotiate with the team in 2018. Fuck that guy.

Which makes sense, if he (Cousins) is willing to gamble on playing for the tag and 24 mil guaranteed, instead of 53 mil guaranteed (and 72 mil guaranteed for injury).

Skins - good job putting the statement out there to try and get ahead of the PR. Bruce's statement of "at least the second highest paid player by average by year in NFL history" means his avg per year was in the 24M range.

Carr - 25M; Luck 24.5; Palmer 24.3; Brees 24.2 (2017 salaries).

Cousins - I think you played yourself. Hard to say to a guy making guaranteed 23.9M this year but one bad injury and youre done. One down year .... a team might still give you big money.

Im a big Cousins fan .... but this doesnt look good for him, if the skins offered what they say they offered.

Re: Cousins 3.0, he's going to sign the franchise tag

I would agree if those numbers are in fact true then KC has to go. That seems like a fair deal and if he turned it down then he is obviously trying to force the Redskins hand.

Maybe KC is bitter at the organization for low balling him in previous years. Maybe he really dislikes working for Dan and Bruce. We've all has bosses that we'd disliked. Maybe he didn't like the entire ordeal with Griffin and how he was coddled. At this point on KC knows...

He'll be on Grant and Danny tomorrow. It will be interesting to see what he has to say.
