Re: Coronavirus (political)
Has any recent push to re-open gone smoothly? The virus is spiking in areas that re-opened too soon or never shut down completely. And many states are back pedaling now. Last thing we need is a disaster in the schools.

Re: Coronavirus (political)
Like everything, decisions must be data driven...if there is evidence schools can safely open they def should. Flu is more dangerous to children than the Rona and that’s great news. Europe hasn’t shown issues where schools have been back since Spring.

If Fauci and other experts think it's ok, fine. But if it's Trump leading the push and science isn't on board, fuck no. And again the main concern here is with the teachers and staff, and what about kids bringing it home to parents or grandparents? It's not that easy to just say kids won't get sick so let's roll. |

Id say Maryland is going pretty well. Weve been opening up some things. I went to the Sandy Point with my kid to play in the sand and swim in the Bay, place was packed. Malls have opened but no food court. Playgrounds have reopened and the yellow tape removed. ----------------------------------------------------------- More than 724,000 COVID-19 Tests, 4.51% Positivity Rate. Maryland has now conducted 724,463 COVID-19 tests, including 10,937 tests over the last 24 hours. The state’s seven-day average positivity rate has dropped to 4.51%—down more than 83% from its peak level on April 17—and the daily positivity rate is 3.36%. Baltimore County Hits 10% Testing Goal. Baltimore County became the 11th jurisdiction to meet the statewide goal of testing 10% of the population in all 24 jurisdictions. Here is how the state’s most populous jurisdictions rank: Baltimore City: 11.6% of population tested Prince George’s: 10.2% Baltimore Co.: 10.0% Montgomery: 9.6% Howard: 9.2% Anne Arundel: 7.9% -------------------- Weve sent "ambassadors" around to all the shops and restaurants to educate them on Phase 2 opening. Health inspectors have been doing a lot of visits and closing places down in employees arent wearing masks or not enforcing social distancing. ---------------------------------- Over the past few weeks, County business ambassadors visited business to share information on what they need to do to comply with the restrictions for reopening. The County received a complaint on June 29 about employees not wearing masks at the Grille at Flower Hill in Gaithersburg; and a health inspector from the Department of Health and Human Services visited the restaurant on Thursday, July 2. Normal operating hours for the business are Thursday through Sunday. After receiving a verbal reminder about mask requirements, the County again received complaints over the weekend. As the restaurant does not reopen until Thursday, a visit by an inspector will not take place until then. “As we receive complaints about businesses such as the Grille at Flower Hill in Gaithersburg for not following requirements for the wearing of face masks and keeping customers physically distanced, we will fully investigate each complaint,” said County Health Officer Dr. Travis Gayles. “If we find that a business has been educated and continues to willfully ignore the requirements to safely reopen, we will use our legal authority to prohibit their operations until they comply.” -------------------------------------- Maryland, for the most part, doesnt have a big anti-mask its all a hoax crowd and we took it pretty seriously early on. Not ironically, the guy leading the "reopen maryland" thing .. got covid. |
Re: Coronavirus (political)
The study found a link between working memory and social distancing, and subjects -- noting more benefits than costs -- with higher levels of fluid intelligence, fairness and agreeableness followed the new rules of social distancing compliance, the study found.
“The decision of whether or not to follow social distancing guidelines is a difficult one, especially when there is a conflict between the societal benefits (e.g., prevent straining public health resources) and personal costs (e.g., loss in social connection and financial challenges). This decision critically relies on our mental capacity in retaining multiple pieces of potentially conflicting information in our head, which is referred to as working memory capacity,” study author Weizhen Xie (Zane) told PsyPost. “As a researcher in cognitive psychology, I feel that it is our duty to figure out why some people follow the developing norm of social distancing while others ignore it. Addressing this issue may help mitigate the current public health crisis due to the COVID-19,” Xie, a postdoctoral research fellow at the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, added. Xie said: “Realizing this cognitive bottleneck, the bottom line is that we should not rely on people’s habitual following of a norm because social distancing is not yet adequately established in U.S. society. Policymakers should develop strategies to aid people’s decision by making information or debriefing materials succinct, concise and brief.” https://www.foxnews.com/health/coronavirus-compliance-social-distancing-linked-working-memory ---------------- Study says 2 things: 1. More intelligent people were able to comply with the mask/social distancing rules because they are able to consider and weigh multiple pieces of (sometimes conflicting) information. Less intelligent people can only process a single thought, like "liberal media = evil" or "lock her up" 2. Trump could have saved a lot of the less intelligent people of our country if he came out and said "covid = bad, mask = good". Bumper sticker approach to public speaking. K.I.S.S. and repeat it early and often. |

Re: Coronavirus (political)
We don't know the long term health effects of this virus to say it doesn't impact children with any certainty cannot be said at this point. There is zero way to know the mid to long term health effects at this point.
Second there is just too many students with conditions not diagnosed asthma, diabetes that put them in the high risk category. Anecdotally I teach HS science courses and even there I am finding students that I need to report for SST for health reasons that have not been diagnosed. While Europe has opened I would hardly use them as a perfect model for the U.S. They tend have much greater country wide policy instead of relying on the whims of regional leaders. We know there is a portion of the U.S. that looks at government trying to protect the population = bad. My personal feelings are I would love to get back to work in the building. I didn't choose this profession to work with younger generations on a screen. |

Per sources with the VA Governor's office, Virginia is expected to be moving back into Phase 1. An announcement will be officially made tomorrow at 2pm.
It is also expected that Governor Northam will announce that all of VA's schools will be distancing learning, going forward. My thoughts: VA will stay in Phase 1 until we get the vaccine out to the masses. |

Re: Coronavirus (political)
White House trade adviser Peter Navarro tore into Dr. Anthony Fauci in a stunning op-ed on Wednesday, saying the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director, who has been a leading voice on the Coronavirus Task Force, has been “wrong about everything.”
“Dr. Anthony Fauci has a good bedside manner with the public, but he has been wrong about everything I have interacted with him on,” Navarro wrote in a blistering op-ed for USA Today. Navarro began by saying that Fauci “fought against” Trump’s “courageous decision” in late January to suspend flights from China as the novel coronavirus began to spread, arguing that that decision “might well have saved hundreds of thousands of American lives.” https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trade-adviser-peter-navarro-tears-into-fauci-in-blistering-op-ed-wrong-about-everything The president’s comments contradict what both he and Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, have said in the past. During the April 13 coronavirus task force press briefing, Trump was asked if he and Fauci were “on the same page.” He responded: “Yeah, we have been from the beginning.” At the same press briefing, Fauci discussed how responsive Trump was to the recommendations made by the task force. After discussing the recommendations they made regarding mitigation, Fauci mentioned: “The travel [restriction] was another recommendation, when we went in and said, ‘We probably should be doing that.’ And the answer was ‘yes.’ And then another time was, ‘We should do it with Europe,’ and the answer was ‘yes.’ And the next time, ‘We should do it with the U.K.,’ and the answer was ‘yes.’” While Fauci said in the earlier stages of the pandemic that a China travel ban was “not something that I think we're even considering,” according to New York Times interviews with White House aides and Fauci himself, by January 30 the leading public health officials in the federal government were recommending travel restrictions with China to President Trump. Aides also told the Wall Street Journal that it was Fauci, CDC Director Dr. Robert Redfield, and Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar that convinced the initially- skeptical Trump to make the decision. Azar’s explanation of the decision echoes this reporting, as he said the travel restrictions were implemented based on “the uniform recommendations of the career public health officials here at HHS.” Fauci supported the travel restrictions with China publicly as well. At the task force press briefing on the day the restrictions were announced, Fauci said that “because there are so many unknowns here, we’re going to take the action that the secretary will describe [restricting travel from China], in a temporary way, to make sure we mitigate, as best as we possibly can, this risk.” On February 3, the day after the restrictions took effect, Fauci appeared on CNBC and stated: “As the entry into the United States of potentially infected people is diminished because of the travel restrictions on both sides, of getting out of China and getting into the United States, I think you are going to see a dampening down of [coronavirus cases in the United States]. And that’s the reason why this was done: to protect Americans from travel-related cases.” On February 7, Fauci told reporters that the positives of travel restrictions with China outweigh the negatives and that “this decision was not made lightly.” During the February 29 coronavirus task force press briefing, Fauci repeated how valuable he saw the travel restrictions: “We prevented travel from China to the United States. If we had not done that, we would have had many, many more cases right here that we would have to be dealing with.” (The restrictions didn’t actually prevent all travel from China; they merely restricted it.) On March 15, Fauci said, “The president's decision to essentially have a major blocking of travel from China, that already had an effect of not seeding the way, in Europe—Italy didn't do that.” The next week, on March 22, Fauci said the United States was “not necessarily at all” on the same trajectory for coronavirus cases as Italy, citing Italy’s decision not to “shut out as well the input of infections that originated in China” early on as a possible reason the country was hit particularly hard. Fauci has consistently agreed with the travel decision. Indeed, a wide variety of reporting and his public statements make clear he was an early advocate for such restrictions in internal government coronavirus discussions. Based on all available information, Trump was not accurate to say that Fauci criticized the president’s decision to restrict travel with China. Trump is going to have to absolutely crush Biden in the debates to have a chance at winning reelection. The cumulative effects of all the things going on are wearing on even myself. My voter enthusiasm is draining drastically. Can't imagine how it is for moderate republicans.

Thats why I think they are using other sources like navarro and aides to get the narrative out and not trying to have it come form Trump, because americans generally like Fauci. Even though trump cant help himself sometimes. -2 months ago it was reported the the WH wanted to fire Fauci. -WH mocks the hysterical liberal media as another hoax story - WH instead just sidelines Fauci - Fauci says he hasnt briefed Trump in over 2 months, is pessimistic on the NFL opening, says some regions opened up too fast and didnt follow CDC guidelines, could reach 100k new cases a day, re-opening schools depends on the region - WH begins its full frontal attack on Fauci the past week or so |

I'll admit Cuomo did a terrible job, if you admit a national crisis requires national leadership (which means the feds should've taken the lead on building up supplies and allocating them accordingly to the worst hit areas) instead of telling the governors they need to step up and handle their states. |

New York has more deaths than any other city (for obvious reasons- sort of a transient hangout lol) - Cuomo is an idiot.
USA has more deaths than any other country (no obvious reasons for that to occur) - Trump is handling this whole thing better than anybody has ever handled anything ever. Ahh the oblivious right - gotta love em. Or ya don’t. |

It is absolutely insane. NYC nips it in the bud in a big way (at least for now) and the guy is a criminal for patting himself on the back because Jake Tapper - the same Jake Tapper who does nothing but lie according to them - said so, but Trump says in March we would have zero cases in a week, and he was just being positive. Here's to hoping that hospitals and local, state, and federal governments learn a lot of lessons about disaster preparedness for things such as viruses. I do think it's the 1st 3's responsibility to be prepared for situations like this prior to them happening (as prepared as possible). Once the shit hits the fan, the federal government does need to step up and be a leader. |

I really haven't been too critical of any governor, Republican or Democrat during this pandemic. Not something anyone was prepared for. Being a governor would be brutal right now. No matter what choice you make, approximately half of your constituents will think you fucked up. But Cuomo just brought it on himself going on media and bragging about what a great job he did. Not a good look. Hell I have Newsom as my governor, I don't agree with him on probably anything, and I haven't badmouthed him here. |
