If you are solely judging a HC on SB wins then you will never find the perfect HC. To win the SB is a major accomplishment that requires many factors including luck. You should be looking for a guy that makes you competive which puts you in postion to win a SB, over 14 years in Den MS did that. Bringing a team to the playoffs in the NFL is a big accomplishment, this is not the NBA or NHL were every team makes the playoffs. |

Vinny needs to worry about Vinny. "If" anything did go one in regards to the AH scandal and he opens his mouth he would be black balled. I'm sure most owners would not want to chance bringing him in and having him later running his mouth about their dirty laundry. About the ony team he would not be black balled from would be the Titans. :) Honestly though if he really wants to be in football at any level Pro's, or college then he needs to simply walk away the bigger man (LOL) and say what happened at Redskins Park stays at Redskins Park. He would much more respected for it and might find a job with another team which needs his ability to work around the CAP even though it might be gone. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Cerrato resigns (Bruce Allen hired as VP/GM) - merged
I don't like this...this just means Shanahan is going to be gunning for a QB with the first pick and we will have to wait at least 2 more years for a contender. Thoughts?
|
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Cerrato resigns (Bruce Allen hired as VP/GM) - merged
After reading a few articles yesterday about this process, its looking more and more like Shanahan was asked what it would take to get him hired and he said get rid of Vinny.
Many of the other GM's that saw and talked to Vinny at the NFL meetings late last week said Vinny was not aware of any changes. He was scouting and preparing for the draft. That does not sound like a guy getting ready to quit. The fact that he went to the meetings is a sign that he was out of the loop. Plus throw his childish disrespectful slap at Zorn during his exit speech and that is a sign of a guy that is not happy about this move. |

Shanahan isn't the QB collector that Gruden is. While he may eventually want "his own QB," one has to think he'd be fine with Campbell. QB with our #1 is a distinct possibility but if it happened, it would happen after Jason Campbell was traded for pick(s). Given Campbells improved performance recently, combined with the quality of free agent quarterbacks available, and Campbell could be a hot commodity on the offseason. its not unreasonable to think he could get us a high 2nd or low 1st round pick. in either case, it would make the "sting" of selecting a 1st round QB more palatable. Cowher is rumored to want Campbell to be his QB in Carolina. Arizona is also a possible trade destination (assuming we swapped him for Leinhart, which is very likely if we had Shanny). As of this moment, i'd break the odds down this way on who our starting QB will be in 2010: Jason Campbell - 50% Matt Leinhart - 40% Rookie QB or Veteran QB while our 1st round QB is groomed - 10% One other thing to keep in mind is that Mike Shanahan (who, make no mistake, would be running the show here - Allen would just deal with the details, paperwork, etc.) has always been shrewd when it comes to trades. He values his draft picks and will drive a hard bargain, whereas Snyderatto was always more than willing to throw in a little extra to "sweeten the pot" and get a deal done. I don't expect us to get "the short end of the stick" in trades going forward. |

Carolina would have to pay 6 million to get rid of Fox and their GM. It seems very doubtful that they will do this. And I think the Cowher to Carolina buzz has been pretty quiet lately. |

So what does that mean? In any company if you want to stay employed you will have to eventually go with what the owner wants. You can offer your opinion and make a case for it but in the end the owner holds the cards. No one person is going to come to the Redskins and completely dominate Dan and his decisions, impossible. Who do people want as GM Hitler??? It just blows my mind people are complaining about Bruce Allen when the guy probably doesn't even know what his office looks like yet. give him a chance. Some people are just never fawking happy. |

I honestly don't know enough about the "frugality" of the Panthers ownership, but in talking to my friends (who are honestly not "savvy" enough to get into the financial aspect of front office decisions), they feel Fox will be fired and they HOPE Cowher's the next guy. I don't think they feel Cowher to Carolina is about as much of a given as we feel Shanahan to Washington is - but from my point of view, i've always felt Cowher would end up in Carolina (despite how much i wish he'd be our next coach.). I've got no inside information, its just an opinion/gut feeling. I talk to my friends and i've read the same stuff online that you probably have. At this point, i think Shanahan's coming here, Cowher's going to Carolina, and Gruden (despite the current contract situation) is going to Dallas. Watch me be wrong on all 3 counts. |

Allen was a yes-man in tampa, the only time he's ever held a GM position. And Snyder does not deserve the benefit of the doubt. As you said, we don't know what his office here will look like. We should give things a chance. I dont think anyone is saying this is absolutely going to be a complete failure. I just think its wise that we temper our joy and enthusiasm with some skepticism. If the front office ends up looking like JLC's sources indicate, then we have something to be truly happy over. If DeCosta is brought in and Shanahan takes over, i'll be more happy that you can imagine. But if we end up with Allen and Gruden or Allen and a "small-name" coach, then, chances are, nothings really changed and we have vinny 2.0. Time will tell. But we certainly have more reason for optimism than we did 48 hours ago, that much is certain. |

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Cerrato resigns (Bruce Allen hired as VP/GM) - merged
I'm really starting to hope that they bring in Doug Williams to the front office. If anything we need more people that understand what Redskins football is all about and I think Doug Williams understands that. On top of that I remember Jeff Bostic talking on America's Game about how the offensive line preferred Doug Williams, mainly because he respected the O-Line, where as Jay Schroeder could have cared less. Combine that with the fact that Tampa drafted multiple O-Lineman early during the Allen/Williams/Gruden era and I think we have a chance to get back on track.

Re: BREAKING NEWS: Cerrato resigns (Bruce Allen hired as VP/GM) - merged
I just spend 2 hrs reading all 620 posts.
My points: Cerrato is gone!! That is awesome since it was the #2 problem with the team (#1 being Snyder) THIS IS the biggest good news since Gibbs came back!! Some other guy was hired....apparantly he is ok, but no superstar... Well...who cares? We all thought Cerrato was a suckwad...and he is...so basically 90% of anyone interviewed would have been better....Bruce Allen will be....not to mention he has REDSKINS BLOOD running through his veins. Lets now work on problem #3....our sucky head coach ...then on problem #4...our sucky Oline....then problem #5....OLB, RB, FS, WR, QB depth, WR coach, bad skins PR, etc. It is time to enjoy the day! I would support any headcoaching hire that our GM selects. I am done with Zorn...I am so sick of seeing him on the sidelines looking like he is about to cry...the guy is a wimp...he has no "GUTS"....stay medium? What the hell is that?....strictly QB coach talk....would Lombardi say that? Would Gibbs? We need a LEGITAMATE HEAD COACH. Bring it on MR SNYDER!!! And spend every cent you have this off season! |

I feel the same way. My only problem is Redskins football is hard nosed smash mouth football. As much as we all would like to have that again, we actually have been trying to get/keep that since Gibbs1 left. Shanahan has always had a great running team but I wouldn't call it hard nosed smash mouth football. It's more of a finess style of offense. |

Shanahan has always had a great running team but I wouldn't call it hard nosed smash mouth football. It's more of a finess style of offense.
I tend to think Shanny's running scheme fits the WCO offense better, though this is just speculation. For as long as I can remember our running game worked best when we had real bruising insiders i.e. when Dock and Thomas were in their prime at each G spot. Meanwhile our WR corp wasn't dominant enough to keep the defense from just throwing 8 guys in the box most plays. Shanny's run scheme always seemed to thrive of misdirection so throwing 8 guys in the box doesn't have the same potency. Meanwhile his scheme has always made the WR corp better which takes pressure off the run game. With Shanahan, assuming he's here to win not just collect one final payday, I think our offense is just a couple good lineman away from consistent production. I hope we maintain a strong defensive unit to compliment it. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Cerrato resigns (Bruce Allen hired as VP/GM) - merged
I LIKE IT because Vinny is gone. Also I think Dan Snyder has heard the voice of the fan and is responding. Naming Bruce Allen as general manager is a step in the right direction. I still want to see what decisions he makes about the coaching staff and player signings/acquisitions. Hopefully he will use the draft more than in the past and stay away from overpriced free agents.

a step in the right direction is how i see this move and i like it alot.
now i hope they keep following that to the next step in the right direction as well. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Cerrato resigns (Bruce Allen hired as VP/GM) - merged
I just heard a caller on NFL radio ask Gil Brandt about Bruce Allen and he had this to say (I'm paraphrasing):
-Very bright guy, level headed -He confirmed that he's heard Bruce has total control over hiring a coach, personnel, the draft, etc. Snyder is out of the way. -He sent a note to Allen upon hearing about him getting the job and told him now the other 3 teams in the divison have something to worry about. |
Re: BREAKING NEWS: Cerrato resigns (Bruce Allen hired as VP/GM) - merged
So thats three seperate sources who've now confirmed that Snyder has stepped back. However, I don't beleive (and would hope) that Allen will not have total control over personnel and the draft. He has a horrible record in that department. Additionally, we all know Snyder wants Shanahan hired and thats who Allen is going to hire, unless something crazy happens. And we also all known that Shanahan is going to have final say over personnel and the draft.
When all the dust settles, i'm pretty sure things will look this way (as they should): Dan Snyder, Owner - signs the checks. He may be involved in the sense of wanting to be kept in the loop of whats going on, but he won't be making any of the decisions. Bruce Allen, Vice President and GM - handles the administrative side of football operations. He'll be involved in selecting players, making trades, etc., but he truly won't have final say. Mike Shanahan - President and Coach - coaches the team, reviews potential FA moves suggested by Bruce Allen and his staff, but he'll make the final decision on what players are acquired and cut. As an example, lets say Mike Shanahan wants Matt Leinhart as his QB. Mike would express this to Bruce. Bruce would call Arizona and negotiate terms of the trade. Snyder would pay Leinhart. Now, certainly all three men would be involved throughout each step of the process, but thats how I think it would play out. |

Absolutely... although i would say Shanahan would be the "captain" if he has the team president title and final say over personnel. Allen would be his first mate/commander. Shanahan makes all the decisions at a high level and Allen validates (or challenges) those decisions and then ensures they are executed. |

Absolutely! Snyder appears to have learned meddling lessons. Now if he can just learn patience, he could be one heck of an owner. |

Let's try to not credit Snyder for self-realization until he actually goes an offseason or two without embarrassing himself or his organization. Talking a good game isn't indicative of anything.
