Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
It's amazing what Snyder has done to the league. I mean not even 10 years ago Spurrier was given a 5 year $25 million contract and now that contract has doubled for Shannahan in terms of money. I mean I kind of understand given how much money guys like Holmgen and Parcells are getting but pretty soon the Haynesworth contract will be easily matched. Who knows, in our lifetime we could see a kicker getting the Haynesworth contract, but that could be blamed on inflation.
Baseball was ruined because of high salaries and if this trend continues the NFL won't be far behind. Just look at small market franchises like Buffalo, Jacksonville, they might end up moving to LA were the NFL failed once before. Salary cap or not, when will it reach the limit for small cap market teams for them to be non-competitive? I think it already has for some franchises. If Shanahan is worth 10 mil a year what would Gibbs be worth if he was younger and on his prime? |

The salaries AND the strike. Supposedly....the NFL is setup with revenue sharing etc.to help teams in the smaller markets. I agree that owners like Snyder drive prices up, some people have more money than sense, but didn't smaller market teams do ok before the cap? I mean, Buffalo went to 3 SB's before the cap didn't they? A lot of these markets have a bad product even with the cap because their owners don't WANT to spend. Fortunately other owners don't go as far as Snyder, if they did, we wouldn't have so much deadcap over these lousy deals we've made. Snyder always pays more than the other owners and it usually backfires. I think it's more Snyder than the league as a whole and fortunately no one wants his results. I think he makes a good case for not overspending. But hell...I don't know that much about it. I could be wrong. :) |

SS has said before that SOME around the league think CB has some value. Maybe Shanahan was one of them? |

This guy came into the NFL with the most impressive passing statistics I've ever seen in a college QB. People who wanted to discredit him said "well he played in a run & gun offense" like it's never been played in the NFL before. He has a side arm delivery "they say" and he'll have to change that to play in the NFL. Personally I don't care if he throws with no arms as long as he get's it there. If Shanny is the next coach and Campbell is not brought back, maybe he'll get an opportunity. Madden had good things to say about him after watching him in pre-season. |

Two good young prospects that need only to be given a fair opportunity. Neither Chase or Colt would get that fair opportunity as long as Campbell is around. His draft status coupled with his contract demands that he plays ahead of either guy. We could have what may turn out to be a very good QB already in the building. |

That and the advent of free agency. It wasn't as hard for small market teams to compete back then because through shrewd drafting they could assemble and KEEP a strong team even without spending as much as the big market teams. Once FA came in, the salary's sky rocketed and you cannot assemble a team over a long period. You have a couple years to get good before the strong contributors leave for greener pastures. There is no way Dallas of the 90's, The Bills of the late 80s, or the Steelers of the 70s could have been competitive long term with free agency. Even the Skins would have had trouble since it's unlikely we could have retained the Hogs for a long period. |

Free agency is the main culprit for so much turnover in the league and one of the things I dislike the most. I think you hit the nail on the head. |

Matty has an excellent article about an uncapped year listed under Redskins News by Mark Maske. There will be tougher restrictions on free agency in an uncapped year.

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Ross, if indeed Mike Shanahan becomes the new Redskins coach, I suppose he will bring the vaunted zone blocking scheme he used to run in Denver. If so, what kind of lineman are better suited for this kind of scheme and what made it so successful back in Denver?
--Ethan Sloan, El Centro, Calif. I am pretty sure Shanahan will want to run the zone blocking scheme and have it led by an assistant like Alex Gibbs, Rick Dennison, or even Jeff Jagodzinski. Either way, the scheme works best when the linemen are leaner and quicker so that they can make the critical cut-off blocks on the backside of those runs that lead to the gaping holes. Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
According to pft, mort said the league is requiring the skins to interview a minority candidate again after Zorn is fired. This could delay things or create problems if no minority candidates agree to a sham interview. At this point, jerry likely knows he won't be retained in any capacity so I don't know what motivation he has to interview again.

This is complete and utter bullshit if this is true. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
I'm still not 100% on Zimmer. I mean I think that may play out for a while while Zimmer sees what other opportunities may be out there
Kyle Shanahan for sure, he'll be on board probably at the end of the month |

No it is not. The interview with Jerry Gray was complete and utter bullshit on Gray and Snyder's part. |

Gray and Mike's kid Kyle are both UT graduates and Gray is very big into the Austin thing. Could it be something to the Gray interview for DC as opposed to HC, or perhaps even another interview? |

I sure hope Zimmern comes here, plus doesn't he sort of look like Shanahan?

My understanding is that it's more of a request than a requirement, since Gray was interviewed when Cerrato was in charge and now Allen is in charge. However, I think the bigger issue is that whatever the Redskins did they clearly checked with the Fritz Pollard Alliance and got its blessing but maybe didn't quite check with the NFL league offices. It's a bit surprising if they didn't do that. But if that is the case, it still strikes me as a bit odd that the FPA said it was fine. |

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Ok I'm officially pissed. It was my understanding the Fing NFL informed them the interview was carried out legally. I understand the interview was BS. If I was Gray I wouldn't feel comfortable interviewing for a job that is not vacant and I still work for the man. However "IF" the NFL did say it was ok, how can they decide to change the rules all of a sudden? Pier pressure? Fans and media around the league get to them so they decide to tell DS to conduct another interview? Now that's BS also.
I just wish for once the Fing NFL would get their itshay together and decide the correct answer prior to making a decision. Then you don't have to change it every time. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
ESPN just sent out a text that the Skins plan to fire Zorn tomorrow. I guess for the rest of the country this may be considered breaking news...

^ Hopefully at 7am with an announcment for Shanahan by 8 or 9am with a presser for 10am or the typical 4 or 5pm presser.

Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Shananhan, Kyle, and Zimmer sounds like a great mix.
I just find it hard to believe that Zimmer will be here. He is still coaching and is still focused on the bengals job. How can he come here or have thoughts of coming here even as the Bengals have won thier division and are also lookiing to make a playoff run? |

To me all the signs, stars, and rumors point to Shanahan. No one else is even mentioned. It would turn DC upside down if Shanahan said no and went elsewhere. Oh I'm sure some would be estatic like the ones who don't want him at all but since the break we have heard that he might be coming, 2 weeks ago we heard he was rumored to be the next HC, a week ago the contract was signed and Shanahan ready to take over, fans finally somewhat warm to the idea and BAM... he goes elsewhere. That would be the ultimate suckage. |

Rumor was if he lost his last 2 games he would be fired. He won the last 2 games. Rumor is the owner would keep him if he ended well, broke even 8-8, and won the last 2 games. here's the question. Did Kubiac say he was staying? or was it the owner? It still doesn't mean Kubiac can't quit and be hired by Shanahan. right? I was kinda hoping we could pick up Alex Gibbs as our OL coach so I guess I was hoping they would fire Kubiac and look for a new HC. It would make our chances greater of picking up Alex Gibbs. If Kubiac stays I can't see us being able to raid their coaching staff. Shanahan won't burn a friend like that. |
Re: Report: Shanahan to DC done deal
Shanahan is about as sure a thing as a Antwaan Randle El fair catch. But just like ARE busted out a 43 yard punt return today...there's no telling what might happen with Shanahan.
