Well ... 3rd down conversions are about sustaining drives and eating clock.
Don't get me wrong... I love the quick strike nature of our offense. At the same time a long drive or three keeps our D off the field and that's got to be a good thing.
Well... kind of. If a team was really good maybe they consistently convert on first or second down and never get to third down. They still sustain drives this way. To see if they were really sustaining drives like this, and not just a quick strike offense, you would need to compare the number of first downs to other teams. If you look at this stat for the Redskins, we are tied for 8th best in the league. |

...and really, is there any need to bash the defense at this point? We know they are shitty, and we knew that the moment we lost 4 starters on the squad. Nothing else to say about the defense or Haslett except they're doing the best they can with what they have to work with. That ship will get corrected in the off-season. Going back to the penalties, the more I think about it the more I think this is the bigger issue at hand with our inconsistency. Probably inconclusive data here as I imagine that it depends on when those penalties were called and what side of the ball they were called on.
I think the penalties are a big problem and directly add to our third down % being low. We do a whole lot better at third and short. A lot of our drives seem to end when first down is either a penalty or a play gets blown up for a loss. Kyle has cut way back on those odd slow developing plays or the pure speed play to the short side of the field on third and short, although he still tries to be cute sometimes. RG3 still doesnt read defenses like other veteran QB's do, so third and long, when teams can play strictly pass, is a big struggle for this him. We need to avoid that at all costs. |

Seems like the only twisting is when you sometimes twist your original statements into something that doesnt sound as ridiculous as it did the first time around. Just sayin.... In all seriousness you obviously know the team, and you post some really great links and bring alot to the table imo on this forum. What has me scratching my head is..... You say the defense sucks and so its no use talking about it and so all thats left to talk about is the offense and special teams but to be hyper critical comes across as negative nancyish. Im surprised that in the midst of our current win streak you seem to want to be that way because honestly during the 3-6 period you seemed to be more of an optimist than you do now? I was a huge "doubter" - not "hater" because i always gave Shanny credit for Denver and winning superbowls for an older Elway by installing his system there - of Shanny up until he finally opened my eyes (during the first Giants game - i saw it). Now in fully on board with what he is doing. I think that all the negatives u seem to weirdly want to point out now - are due to a young team with young players at all the key positions. Dont you think third down conversions and penalties will fix themselves as we mature as a team? Also dont you think that even with these "problems" we can still do something special this year? Rant over. |
So if instead of big plays on first or second down we were more consistent on third and long it would help our defense. You cant really expect to score much more than we are scoring is my point.
Dont get me wrong. im not complaining about our overall offensive production. 30 points is nothing to scoff at, and its a marked improvement over anything this team has seen since osaka... but were winning games on the last drives when we could be BURRYING opponents. Every week teams are scoring 40-50 points. Why should we settle for less when we have the most lethal offensive weapon the world has ever seen. Imagine how productive our offense would be if we converted 50% of first downs like the patriots. Add that to rg3 making big plays with his arms and legs... We'd be near unstoppable. |

No AC, no Rak has left a huge void in the DL in terms of applying pressure and it's obvious something Kerrigan cannot overcome by himself. Our LBs have huge issues in coverage, and our main ILB ranks as one of the worst LBs in the game at this point. Secondary? Inconsistent and not put in a good position to succeed. Any time there is no pass rush on a QB, they are going to eat up a secondary and ours is no different. Also....**** all these idiots testing positives for drugs.
I am optimist. Very optimistic. We have a great chance at going to the playoffs and making noise. Now, do I think it's likely we would go far into the playoffs with such a bad defense? Probably not. Most SB winning teams generally have good defenses. Exceptions are defenses that either get a ton of turnovers (think Saints defense with GW).....or ones that bend but don't break. (think Pats defense in early/mid 2000's) But anything can happen once you are in. It's a one game elimination.
Dont you think third down conversions and penalties will fix themselves as we mature as a team? Also dont you think that even with these "problems" we can still do something special this year? Rant over.
I hope so. I think penalties are generally a sign of discipline. That falls on the coaching staff in the end. We went from one of the least penalized teams last year to the most. It's what I call shooting ourselves in the foot. Almost like they are point shaving. Yes, I do think this will eventually get corrected, but it's not comforting while its still going on. |
in 2010 we were 13th with 5.6 penalties per game, in 2011 we were 8th with 5.0 per game. This year we are 31 with 8.1 per game. I put a lot of the penalties on rookies and the team as a whole getting this offense down. I remember several false starts and illegal shifts early on, I know we still are having penalties, but I think another offseason and the familiarity that most of our players will have with this system will lead us back down in terms of the pre snap penalties that tend to kill drives.
|
I would also add the colts and pats and packers to teams that won superbowls because of their offenses in recent history. However they were probably all better than ours - they certainly had playmakers that we dont. That being said i feel like there is a team mentality that has come over these guys because of RG-3 on offense and Fletch on defense. Did you see Kerrigan and the other guys faces when Fletch was giving his post game speech. Hes almost a player coach and I think he has them inspired. We will get CG back for the playoffs. I just have a feeling we are starting to roll at the rite time. A blowout win in one of the next two weeks will cement that feeling. I think its going to be Sunday.
Edit: i meant their defenses had playmakers that ours dont. |

Our lack of success on 3rd down has been a "team effort." Penalties, drops and some errant throws are bad decisions by RG. 3rd quarter against the Ravens we had a 3rd and long with about 7:30 to play and RG through a perfect ball to Garcon (perfect because it was right between the defenders and into Garcon's hands/lap) but he bobbled and dropped it. The Ravens scored on their next possession to go up 28-20. |

Yes but ypa is the real true measuring stick on run D. Teams dont run for alot of yards on us because they pass all day long. When they do run we are not getting gashed though. Unless you want to get into stuff like - well if they kept running the ball we would get worn down and the ypa would go up. Teams do abandon the run when they play us. |

With Jenkins injury he probably shouldn't be expected to be back to his old form till next year. It takes a year to recover, give or take. He is improving now which makes me think he just needed a little more time to regain his strength and quickness. Next year, look out. Unfortunately, Carriker and Neild may be in that boat next year. |

I know what his argument is, and it's still purely conjecture. Washington is seventh in rushing YPG allowed, and tied for 13th in YPA allowed. They are also tied for ninth in rushing TD's allowed. All of those numbers refute the idea that the Redskins would have the worst rush defense in the league if other teams would simply hand the ball off more often. Yes, they were torched by and elite back in Ray Rice, but earlier in the season they held Adrian Peterson to less than 80 yards(the last team to hold him under 100) without a touchdown, and held him to his third lowest YPA for the season. |

I think you can make the case either way. If a team were to start running, and we can pull our linebackers into the box, then I think we can shut down the run, but we are so afraid of deep passes/tight end screens that we aren't aggressive against the run. Without research, I would use the Tampa game as one I think would bear that out. |

Two ways to look at that stat. Adrian Peterson only got the ball 17 times and rushed for 79 yards for an average of 4.6 yards a carry. They just did not give him the ball enough. Mainly because they were losing badly. We were up 24-9 by the middle of the third quarter. Teams are not likely to run the ball against you if they have to catch up from that deficit. I do believe that the defense has improved and they are creating turnovers. But one also has to realize that the reason our run defense looks good is because teams often have to play catch up. The saints and the cowboys both ran the ball around 10 times each. When teams stuck with the run, Like Carolina, Pitt, NYG they have had success. Baltimore was tearing us up, but Cam Cameron always does the same thing and that is put the game in Flacco's hands, and of course he got fired later for this. If we have to play a run oriented team in the playoffs (if we make it) like Seattle and they stick with the run I don't believe our defense can hold up. |

Of the three teams you mentioned that stuck with the run; the Steelers and Panthers got up on the Redskins early, and the Giants gameplan was to keep Griffin on the sideline, so obviously those teams ran more often. You're kind of cherry picking to make your point, and ignoring the bigger picture. If it was a simple matter of more rushing attempts, couldn't the same logic be applied to RG3, who leads the league in passing YPA? Cofield is a really good player and our front 3 d-linemen have done a good job against the run before the Ravens game. I think where he lacks as a NT is being able to take up two blockers and collapse the pocket. I hope Baker can develop into that space eating NT. |

You made my point, when teams want to run the ball on us and its part of their game plan and they stick to it our run defense has proven not to be that good. I am not saying its the worst run defense in the league but its not a top 10 run defense. What I am saying is the main reason our run defense is a top 10 run defense according to yards is because teams do not try to run the ball on us, they pass the ball because we are so bad against the pass, that does not mean we are good against the run either though. |

Cofield is having a very good year. He has 2 less sacks than last year but he's doing his job up front. He's also had 1 forced fumble. Has Baker subbed for Cofield at NT at any point this season? When Baker has gotten into games he's played either LE or RE. |

I didn't say you said he wasn't a good player, Ruskins. Cofield is not a convential NFL NT. He played at 306 last season and he's up to 318 this season. He played NT @ Northwestern before being drafted by the NYG for his ability to penetrate against the offensive line. Conventional NT or not, Cofield is a great defensive linemen but I don't see him playing any other place along the defensive front except NT. |
Re: Ravens at Redskins Post Game Thread (RG3 MRI Result-Sprained Knee)
Ton of comments on this thread and admittedly, I have not read them all, so I apologize if this is redundant. The Redskins-Ravens game had everything! Games like this one are the reason why fans so love the NFL. This game will sell tickest to future games, and will improve TV ratings of future games, and sell SundayTicket packages. This Redskin win is why we watch. We want to see our team do something special against playoff caliber teams.
I texted some of my Redskin buddies after the game and told them that this might just be the best regular season NFL game that I have ever seen, or at least remember, since my viewing covers a lot of ground (back to 1955). When writers recall the current segment of Redskins history in future years, this game will be prominently discussed. The drama was compelling. The Redskins started fast, faded, and then made a dramatic comeback! Mix in the injury to our superstar, his heroic effort to re-enter the game, and then the touch that Redskin fans have loved forever & a day, the backup QB enters to save the day. What a script - Hollywood could not have done better. A great game, great win, and a great day! What next, Phoenix rises from the ashes? Absolutely! |
