He reminds me of Tua 100%, if everything is on time and in rhythm, you wont find many better, but if you can get to him and knock him off his spot he will struggle

Chatter about him playing with a cracked rib and clearly laboring. This won't help his round 1 stock but the overall body of work will keep scouts in tune. Mich. Defense is raunchy. No telling how they'd make the other super duper touted QBs look worse than they are as well. Michigan crushed qbs this year. This is not a shock at all.
How about Harrison at #2 then package our 2ds and ? to move up to pick Penix?
No Penix. Was hurt for three different years at Indiana and lefty quarterbacks make me nervous. I know there are a handful of great ones, but man it seems like an awkward motion. We need a LT or a QB named Maye or Williams , maybe Daniels with that second pick.

Penix also has three stud wr’s that bail him out. Hard pass.

If Harbaugh gets the coaching job, I can see him making a play to get Caleb.
The Harbaugh brothers like athletic QBs.

Penix supporters got real quiet.

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread

Penix played great in the semi-final. I hadn't seen him play at all until that game. I was very interested to see what he would do vs. that Michigan D, and he came up small to be honest. Missed wide open receivers all night. That game really could have been much closer, but he just didn't play well. Looked hurt too, which probably contributed to his poor play also.

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread

Report is he got trod on on one of his INT's and hurt his ankle, and that affected him there on out.

I agree, availability is a big marker for a QB. Keep the #2 pick and get Maye.

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread

Penix is too much of a injury liability to get picked in Top 5. It's Williams, Maye, or Daniels.

I'm on the Daniels train until I get off at the next Maye stop.

skinsfan69 01-09-2024 10:14 AM

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread

Let's say Caleb or Maye played for Wash last night. Would they have fared any better? C'mon guys be smarter. Any QB that is under that kind of pressure is not going to have a good game. Mich's defense was flat out balling last night and that made Penix about as uncomfortable as I have seen him. The pressure got to him, just like it does w/ the greats in the NFL like Mahomes.

W/ that being said it's all about the overall body of work, not one game against a superior opponent.

And it's not like Caleb or Maye or Daniels didn't have bad games along the way. Look at Caleb's numbers against top defenses. He's not even a 60% passer. The QB's are not going to play well if the guys around them don't. The QB is the most dependent guy on the field.

Daniels needs to live in the weight room. He's doesn't even look like he's 200 lbs.

could you imagine if Caleb had to play Michigan's defense last night? He would have asked his mom to come down on the sidelines and coddle him and hold his hand. Then after the game he perhaps would have got his nails done.

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread

Penix, IMO, is a second day pick. I wouldn't use a first round pick on him. Two knee/leg injuries in college and he's also likely hit his ceiling or very close to hitting it at his age.

I've only seen two now - both College playoff games. He looked really great against Texas, but he wasn't under pressure in that game like he was against Michigan.

I agree with you that it's all about the overall body of work, not one game. Despite his injury history, someone will likely take him in the 1st, either because he's worth it or because QBs are always over-drafted. I am not sure he'll go in the top 5 though. It's probably Maye & Williams in the top 5, Daniels and Penix next two off the board somewhere between 10-32.

I won't be mad if he falls to us. I'll cheer him on cause he will play for my favorite team. But the vibe I get is a little Kyler Murray, a little RG3 and I don't want that.

The draft positions should be as you say unless New England panics and takes a QB in the Top 5. I mean, their QB situation is truly pathetic.

Was listening to Sirius XM NFL and they compared Maye to Drew Bledsoe / Herbert type.

Caleb to Kyler Murray / Mahomes

Daniels to RG3 (I Don't see that one)

White QB, find a white comparison

Black QB, find a black comparison

LOL, so lazy.

Besides the fact Daniels can run, he is nothing like RG3 imo. Caleb can't be like Murray and Mahomes altogether, those are 2 completely different QB's.

Yup.

I thought last night, it was a bigger condemnation on JJ McCarthy than Penix.

JJ isn’t even a second round pick

50/50 chance they all bust. But I'm on the Daniels train. I think there are quite a few people who disagree with me on him, and that's OK. You all have the right to be wrong.

Can someone tell me what Maye has done to get all this draft praise? I watched a bit of the Clemson game and he didn't even look like a first rounder at all. He didn't look as good as the other guys. He struggled the entire game. Looked lost. Looked like Tribusky.

He's similar to Howell in regards to how he looked better his 2nd to last year compared to his last year. His numbers were better in 2022.

https://www.espn.com/college-football/player/stats/_/id/4431452/drake-maye

UNC was a mediocre team. If you watch his highlights, that's how you know if you like him or not (as a casual fan like us, not a scout/GM), unless you're a UNC fan and watched all of this games. He has all of the tools.

[YT]Z8CjX0JzL_U[/YT]

Drafting QB's isn't easy. Look at Allen's stats at his last year at Wyoming. They looked like high school numbers.

QB's, all in the eye of the beholder in the 1st round. We all have our favorites, and have no clue if they will actually be good or not.

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread

For me, I'm at the point where I don't really care who they draft. I just want the new regime to come in with a plan and execute it to a T. If that means starting over at QB, because they really like one of these prospects coming out - so be it. If that means building around Sam, because they think the QB of the future is already in the building - super.

I'm just grateful that we will almost certainly have competent folks running the operation from top to bottom soon. Something we haven't seen in a very long time.

I totally agree with this. I think it's a 99/1 chance, we draft a QB at No. 2, but if we don't, I'm OK with that. Hard to complain if we walk-away with Harrison, Fashanu, Alt, or a boatload of picks from a trade (if we don't go QB).

Give me Daniels, Maye, Harrison Jr., Fashanu, Alt, or more picks. But I'll be happy regardless, w/ any of those options.

Re: 2024 Early Bird Draft Thread

Caleb Williams is the only college QB in this class who grabbed my immediate attention. That's because he improvises like Mahomes, throws like Allen, and makes incredible plays like both of them. He's the one I want unless he suffers a serious injury such as a split finger nail.

I basically agree with this other than I don't want to pick a player at 2 that isn't a QB. If they don't like the QBs or they like Howell, you have to trade the pick. There's just so much value in a QB-desperate league. I love the guys you mentioned, but I would much much rather they trade back.

my only concern with either him or maye is they really haven't played anyone great, williams has a few more top 25 opponents but Maye hasn't seen shit

if you put me in a grassy field with first graders, i am going look pretty good at QB
