Exactly. The whole point of getting the organization right, was that decisions were made by the "appropriate" person. I don't think a GM should make the final call on a position coach. I imagine Shanahan talked to BA and got his opinion, and maybe Snyder's to, but it's Shanahan's call to make. No more, "he's a VC guy, or a DS guy, or a whoever guy" if the coach is on the staff, it's Shanahan's responsibility - for good or bad.
Sometimes when you've been a bad relationship for a long time, when you get out, you still don't know what a good relationship even looks like. That is the best explanation I can come up with for a LOT of the fan comments I see and hear.
I agree with that; I wasn't trying to say that Allen should've been making that decision or anything. |

Re: Coaching Staff update
I totally agree in regards to seeing our young WR's hopefully getting playing time. I'm on the fence with any other WR being brought in, but I could see us finding a better replacement for ARE and that replacement might be Kevin Walter who played a similar roll in Houston. Plus he's worked with Kyle Shanahan and his Assistant. I could see us going in a different direction from Moss. I know that sounds taboo but I could see them swapping Moss out with Bryant or T.O. I don't necessarily want T.O. it's just that these are the few WR's that are FA with out any ties. We would not have to give up any draft picks or trade out any players to get one. I like Moss but I just don't see him as a #1 WR. Will any of the young ones step up to fill that roll as #1?
It's just a feeling but I think the team steps up and finds a bona fide #1 WR so there's no question about who is going to step up, then hope that the new coaching staff can get any of the three young WR's to step up into that roll. Which if that's the case then getting a WR possibly with a one yr deal would be best and if by next yr none step up then you know you either have to give the WR brought in a new contract for the future or draft a #1 WR. I think the other FA's would want more then a 1 yr deal other then T.O. Then there's the reports that Shanny tried to get T.O. and fell short. Do you think he will let it happen again? Especially if T.O. is a FA with no strings attached other then to sign him. I kinda hope I'm wrong, but I could also see him here taking two DB's which would get Moss, Thomas, Kelly or Mitchell open more often. Again I'd rather see Walter replacing ARE and Bryant replacing Moss with Thomas, Kelly, and Mitchell rounding out the WR corpse. What I'm affraid will happen is we pick up T.O., let ARE go and have Moss, Thomas, Kelly and Mitchell. I don't see us going after Marshall because we would have to give up a high draft pick and Denver is not stupid enough to simply cut him. They will want to get something out of him.
You made good points about no guaranteed #1 receiver on the team.. This definitely will be a problem if nobody steps up as #1, however I'm pretty sure Shanahan(s) are smart enough to make offense great without #1, only due to number of weapons. However, I guess we both agree on the idea of bringing Owens in is not such a good idea.. As for Walter replacing ARE, I would not oppose to this move.. But my question is why do we MUST replace ARE with a free agent? Why we don't try replace ARE with what we have? Although, having Walter sounds pretty good, because he can help us in few positions including the return for special teams.. If we decide to release Moss, then I will advocate that we should try to bring Walter in to replace him.. I don't think we should release him though, because he adds the speed to offense, which we already have with Thomas and Mitchell.. And not to mention, Moss could start playing as punt returner and maybe kick off returner? This would give us another reason not to sign Walter.. The upside of bringing Walter in is he's younger than Moss; we would have an opportunity to not have to worry about replacing Moss for next two or three years.. |

So this guy was a WR coach in college, transition to ST here. Nice youth, but I am just wondering how many former WR coaches we now have. It seems like they are scattered throughout the organization. (not complaining, just making an observation) |

The Redskins also hired Paul Kelly with the title of Assistant to the Head Coach/Football Administration. Kelly has previously served as an assistant to head coach Bill Callahan in Oakland, and Jon Gruden in both Oakland and Tampa Bay, with responsibilities including assisting in football operations, overseeing player and staff communications with the head coach and managing the football calendar. Yeah, without knowing his specifics (who he really pushed for, discovered, etc) it's hard to say if he will have made enough of an impact for a new regime to keep him on. But the guy went from intern to director of pro personnel in less than 10 years, seems to be solid.. even though he worked under Cerrato! |

Touche. :) nice dig on me. But this is the place I always come to first and hang out at almost all the time. I make a sweep everywhere else in case there is news we have missed. On a side note I'm not into the scouts that much and could care less who's in or out so long as they do their job. Although some could say they have done good but not great. I remember something mentioned about it but I haven't heard much about it lately. I thought it came up back when Shanahan was announced because everyone thought there would be a whole sale change there also, but it didn't happen. Maybe M.Shanahan felt that who ever he brought in would have to work over time trying to get caught up on all the college players and scouting and it would be hard with college football essentially over. |

Just let him finish his job. I'm not sure what's going to happen quite honestly. Scott Campbell's always been a good lieutenant but how much longer do you keep around for just to do that? As for Brown, I know Snyder's a huge fan and would love for him to stay on the staff but he may be better off getting a chance to shine elsewhere. |

Re: Coaching Staff update
The funny thing is up until they picked Cook and Capers I wanted the front office guys (not Allen) to leave as soon as the draft was over. Now I'm not so sure that I'd want to see them go. It's just that up to those last two picks it was clear that the guys who worked under Vinny were making the day 3 picks.
I mean even the pattern of Riley (LB) - Morris (TE turned FB) -Austin (WR) was erringly similar to the picks of Henson (LB) - Williams (TE turned FB) - Mitchell (WR) last year. Throw in the fact that they selected another player in the 7th round from UCLA and I pretty much knew that these were the guys that were partially responsible for the holy draft board that never seemed to have lineman at the top. Now I don't want to say that two 7th round picks should be enough to convince me to want to keep around a group of scouts and personnel people but at the same time it did show that they were in fact willing to draft lineman late. Which given our current situation is definitely an improvement. Sorry for peddling to conspiracy theory for the 10,000th time with the pick pattern but it's just something that to this day makes me scratch my head and wonder how confident these guys are in evaluating offensive and defensive lineman as opposed to DB's, LB's, WR's, and FB's. |

Hopefully the pattern is pro bowler, pro bowler, pro bowl snub, pro bowler, camp fodder. Still I think I have to take a moment and give credit to none other then Vinny Cerrato. Thanks to his hiring of Zorn we were able to fire him 2 years later, bring in Bruce Allen who in turn hired Shanahan. Vinny, hiring Zorn was the best move you ever made in your 10 years in Ashburn. |
