Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
Beck had no chance in Baltimore with Joe Flacco. He's maintained he wanted to be in a position where he could eventually become a starting QB again. That was not going to happen there so he probably talked his way out.

Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
what are you talking about? rivers, vick, ben, romo, ryan and even josh freeman are not "other guys." jason campbell is a better qb than john freakin beck. the guy got traded from balt. for some guy named doug dutch. the ravens have a legit front office and if they thought he could play then they would've kept him cause bulger is probably outta there.
we're not winning 9 games in the nfc east with john beck. give me a break.
I don't believe for a second that Shanahan would tank the season. Nevertheless, I can see how you might think that Shanahan must be trying to lose if he's planning to use Beck as his starting QB. |

I don't see believing that Beck has a chance to be a viable option at QB is hype. |

I dont see John Beck as a QB in the NFL but then again I'm not an NFL coach either.. Hope the guy plays well, I'm tired of BAD QB play

He can't be any worse than what I've witnessed from the position the last four years. If (and it is an "if") he plays fairly well and shows some promise he'll be accepted and you can brace yourself for the Shanny is a genius....headed to the hall post and threads. |

THIS! Thank you! I really hate all this loser talk of tanking. If you advocate losing, then you are a loser. There have been so many "can't miss" players who flopped in league history any fool thinking that we should or would lose games for the sake of a kid really needs to get a clue. Tell you what, if you want the 2011 team to lose, don't cheer for them in the fall when they do well or you'll be called out as a hypocrite. As for Beck, who knows if he even takes a snap, hell Rex could beat him out, but how about we get to camp before we start plotting 2012 draft picks? I'll be so glad when this lockout is over! |
Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
I honestly thought this ridiculous tanking talk was done but....

May just have to rewalsr the cracken !

Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
The other part of the Luck equation is that if a team actually, purposely tanked to get the first overall pick and draft him, he's got a year of eligibility in his back pocket to avoid having to play for such a loser organization.

Perhaps Andrew Luck should tank his season so he'll drop in next year's draft and get picked by a good organization. |

I hope he does surprise us but I just don't see how Shanahan and co. can sit there with a straight face and give this guy the job. |

Didn't work for Jake Locker, he went to the Titans. :cheeky-sm |
Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
No kidding but if he had any ability don't you think they would've held on to him as a back up?
Beck went to the Ravens mid-training camp. He was behind Troy Smith who was gonna be the starter and behind Joe Flacco the QB of the future both of which were selected by the Ravens front office.
Then they had the chance to get a proven starter like Mark Bulger. Beck was the odd man out caught in a numbers game. It doesn't mean he can or can't play just that he wasn't in a situation where he was gonna get a real shot. There are a finite number practice reps/snaps in an NFL practice and the lions share goes to the starter then the QB of the future or back-up then if there are scraps then the 3rd string QB can get a look running his teams offense. Otherwise they're running the scout team w/ a simplified version of the teams next opponent. |
Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
Hey 30, do you mean Jared Gaither in your sig? Or is there someone named Jeremy Gaither that I don't know about.
Clabo would be something else, not sure he leaves though Starting to hear Harris may not be so definite here, but as I've mentioned in the past, Jammal Brown is likely to return so maybe no room for both? |

Clabo? If we're supposedly looking at Santonio Holmes and Cullen Jenkins then I figure why not make a run at one of the better players at position where we're in need of an upgrade. I'm glad to hear that about Harris I think he's over rated. Yeah, he has scheme familiarity and yes he's young but he's also injury prone. I can't imagine why we would want Jammal Brown over some of the other FA OTs. He's older; he's essentially playing out of position and may want a good amount of money. I think we should be able to do better then a RT who was barely more effective then Stephon Heyer. Heck, I would be okay with a journeyman brought in to compete with Clint Oldenburg as I would be with Jammal Brown and Ryan Harris. Journeymen: Basically looking for the FA versions of our own Monty/Licht guys that got a chance to play and played well enough to garner a look as a starter: Pat McQuistan Ryan Cook Longshots to bring in to compete for the job: Rashad Butler (scheme familiarity w/ Kyle in Houston but only 4 career starts) |
Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
Hate to make you post again but do me a favor and put that in the new 2011 Redskins FA thread, fits better there. I'll have some reaction

Bring in the oft injured Bulger over a young kid tells me all I need to know. A FA QB is in the works. |

Get up to speed on what John Beck has been saying from day one. He wanted to find the right situation where he could become a starting QB again. He was not going to have that opportunity in Baltimore and probably made his feelings known to management.....thus he talked his way out. |

Troy Smith is a preseason beast too. Not a long-term answer as a starter, but a good sparkplug of a backup. |
Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
Junkies put Beck on blast today
EBJunkies Eric Bickel Bill Parcells and Ozzie Newsome 2 of the most accomplished personnel guys in the league both punted John Beck. Your honor, I rest my case. EBJunkies Eric Bickel Former teammate of Beck: "No touch on short passes. Not that great. No names please....He is no good. Great guy though." EBJunkies Eric Bickel Alright... we just CRUSHED John Beck for 2 hours for no reason. LOL.... literally for sport. Now I feel bad. ugh. |

It doesn't matter what his situation is. He doesn't have ability to be a legit NFL starter or maybe even a back up. Hope I'm wrong but from everything that I've seen from this guy says he doesn't look the part. |
Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks right now except for Shanahan, and he thinks Beck looks the part. We'll know soon enough who's right or wrong.

There are probably few people who actually believe John Beck will prove to be the long term answer at the QB for the Redskins, neither have I heard anyone suggest it. However, all signs point to there being a competition for the position and he will be included in that competition (at least for this season.) I'll be content to let the coaches decide whether he's legit or not. |
Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
I don't have a problem with going to Beck but have a back-up plan someone like VY with a third qb in Pat Delvin.

Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
Reading on SI.com last night and it said Kyle covets Matt Leinart who was in Houston last year in the same system he runs. I'll be ok with Beck, Rex, Leinart going into camp. We aren't spending big money on a FA QB so if that's what we roll with let's make the best of it.

Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
It'll be pretty funny if Beck gets cut before the season starts.
|
Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
I'll give Beck a chance and let him compete with Rex. May the best man win. I see alot of people asking for Vince Young, IMO, unless he received a brain-transplant over the offseason/lockout, he is just going to blow his stack and freak out the minute something goes wrong.
I've said it before and i'll say it again, I think Vince Young is a good person, a good man, and a very talented football player, HOWEVER, he is not mentally well at this point in time, and it is very selfish of anyone to ask him to play instead of get his health straightened out. Vince can be OK again but mental illness is not something to joke with. He needs help. |
Re: Redskins 2011 Starting Quarterback: John Beck?
I really don't think Vince Young is mentally ill, not at all. Maybe he's been a bit insecure, but not mentally ill.

I hope he is insecure somewhere else then. Last thing we need is an unstable locker room and more media circus-fed stories. |

I respect your opinion, and I can see where you would get that feeling. I was just going from the times where they were reporting VY to be "Suicidal", that time where he went missing from his family for a few days, and they found him locked in his car and all that. Then the well documented issue he had last year, throwing his pads at the fans and all that. Maybe insecure, sure. but if he was truly suicidal which his mother and friends felt he might have been, that screams mental illness. |
