Interesting analysis.

There's a good chance Ron Paul wins Iowa next week. I think the question is by how much of a margin. If Ron Paul, Mitt Romney, and Newt Gingrich (though it appears Rick Santorum is surging) are all bunched together, I don't think it matters as much. There's very little chance Ron Paul wins New Hampshire. For that to happen would be just an incredible turn of events and would damn near sink Mitt Romney.

That said, Ron Paul is the X factor. If he decides to become a third party candidate it could hurt President Obama as much, if not more so, than Mitt Romney or whomever is the eventual Republican nominee. Ron Paul has cobbled together an interesting coalition of liberal, conservative, and libertarian supporters. Most of his views are considered fringe, but there are elements of his national security platform that resonates strongly with Obama supporters who essentially believe that Barack Obama sold them down the river on issues such as closing Gitmo, National Defense Authorization Act (indefinite detention of American citizens), Bin Laden should have gotten a fair trial, our covert drone operations in Yemen, Pakistan, and Afghanistan and other civil liberties that Ron Paul and his supporters believe are unconstitutional. And that's just the beginning.

At the end of the day it's still Mitt Romney's to lose, but he's going to have to earn it and appears that Republicans are very much in a speed dating mood when it comes to these candidates. Whatever happens on the right, President Obama is going to be a worthy candidate and very difficult to beat, especially with the economy on the mend.

I've actually never voted in a primary. It's usually done by the time it gets to Va. At this time I have no clue who I'll vote for. I have been working it seems 24/7 the past several months and have seen little to any news. I was hoping things would slow down some in Jan & Feb. like they normally do but I'm as busy as ever.

Iowan here. Ron Paul cannot steal delegates. Delegates are nominated and elected by the people of individual precincts. These delegates then cast the vote in the county conventions. If the Ron Paul supporters were more willing than anyone else to be nominated, then they will be the ones representing their precinct.

At the county conventions delegates are selected for District and State Conventions. It is there the official delegates are chosen for the presidential nominating conventions.

If the whole system is full of Ron Paul supporters, then they are most likely to vote for him.

In the caucus four years ago, Huckabee won with 35% of the vote. McCain had 13%. In the end McCain won all of Iowa's delegate votes at the national convention.

Confused yet, haha.

I don't think Paul's going away, but he's not going up either. Likely downhill as far as polling numbers go. Iowa was tailor made for a Ron Paul victory, yet Rick Santorum overtook him by a pretty sizable margin with a fraction of Paul's money and ground organization.

The golden rule, though, if your guy can't beat Mitt Romney, chances are he can't beat President Obama either.

But rather in the sense that the poll is just a glorified straw poll. And that the actual delegates that are/were awarded were based off of the delegates that were nominated and elected after the “straw poll”, which normally are representative of the popular vote. So its not that Paul “stole” anything, its just that he won many of the actual votes for delegates, even if he didn’t win the respective pretend vote for delegates. VERY confusing.[/FONT][/COLOR]

More or less you got it. Some of the delegates "awarded" will be up for grabs at the time of the convention. If you are a delegate, you are expected to vote for whomever the party elected, but in reality can vote for whomever you want. You are the elected delegate of your people. Now Perry won two delegates, and when he drops out his would be up for grabs. This is how McCain won all of Iowa's convention delegate votes, everyone else was basically out.

I did vote. While waiting for the vote count everyone stayed and we were able to elect our two delegates. Honestly I do not know who they voted for. We elected an 18 year old girl, and a man in his late 20s or early 30s who was a proclaimed former Obama supporter. I assume one was for Paul, probably both though.

Edit: I should add, four years ago, no one volunteered to be a delegate and basically you had to pull teeth to get someone to do it. This time around 4 people volunteered relatively quickly. I think the two that lost were definitely Paul people as they were sitting in a pro Paul group. They are my precinct's alternates.

Let me clarify the word "ANY" in that statement. That was referring to ANY of the politicians being democratic or republican. It wasn't just aimed at the GOP. We certainly know that Obama doesn't have any moral character because he's selling out to wall street and big businesses as fast as he can and doing the exact opposite of what he promised in his campaign. If you would like me to bash on the democratic party, start one up about the Jackasses (aka donkeys) and I'll be glad to bash away.

I have not watched any of the debates but what I saw of last nights Newt was on fire and I loved this line.

Why did Obam pass a law allowing parents to keep their children on their health Ins until age 26? Because he knew he could not create any new jobs for them.

im not sure i was getting the love fest for Gingrich? do we have to open up his closet again, for all of those skeletons to come out?

I think politically Newt is great but I have a major problem with his personal life. Not sure how he an claim family values when he has been married 3 times. If it was not for that I'd vote for him. He will not get my vot for Rep nomination but I would vote for him if he won the rep nomination.
