The transition tag doesnt give any compensation but does the other 2.
The non-exclusive franchise tag (which is different than the franchise tag. The franchise tag does not allow a player to negotiate with any other teams at all) is what gives 2 firsts as compensation if he signs elsewhere and it doesnt get matched.
Plus it would cost 9 vs 11 million |

How much do we have to spend again? Aren't signing Orakpo and high priced FA like Byrd now more reasonable? FA doesn't fix all problems, but bringing young FA in their primes seems great if we can fit it into the cap.. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Orakpro not worth the price. Orakpo has not had one great game against a top left tackle . Not one. Never sacked Tony Romo . For example.

FA doesn't fix all problems, but bringing young FA in their primes seems great if we can fit it into the cap..
When the cap number goes up, the tag numbers go up some, as well. Nevertheless, I think you're right in the case of teams that just need to add a couple of finishing pieces to their rosters. For them, signing high priced FA's probably does make more sense now than ever before. Unfortunately, right now the Redskins have so many roster holes to fill that they may feel the need to sign eight, ten, or even more FA's. For the Skins, even the accelerating cap number may not allow them the cap room they think they need to sign a top FA or tag one of their own players, like Brian Orakpo, and still fill most of the other roster holes. That seems to be their dilema. I agree with you about bringing in young FA's in their primes. If the Skins are ever to become perennial contenders, The FA's they sign now must still be on the roster when their young QB and their other draftees have developed. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
just want to piggie back on what everybody else is saying , if we franchise tag rak. his cap hit is 11.55 million i like him really alot but not at that price per yr.when we have so many other nneds as well ,i was hoping he would take something around 4 yrs and 9 million per yr i think thats a good price for him.i just can,t give him almost 12 mil. per yr
|
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
For Orakpo's position, you either you draft with a first rounder or you are going to pay a high price in free agency. It is the highest paid position besides QB.

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
and one more thing we still have to sign a middle linebacker ,and what p.riley is asking for might be to much also.we mneed help bad.....

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Maybe we keep Jackson pray about Jenkins and let Rak go.

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
I agree, give him at least the transition tag. We've lost Rogers, Landry and gotten nothing in return let's not do it with Orakpo. Who out there is better than Orakpo? Pay him.
I don't think it comes down to who's better. It comes down to getting a fair deal. We have so many holes. With the money it's going to take to pay him, we could fill multiple positions which could also help with special teams. I could see if Rak was a game changer, but he's not. I would try and go with the cheaper option in Jenkins and perhaps re-sign Jackson/Tapp. In 2012, the defense played better w/out him. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
I have to agree with most of the posts here... I really like Orakpo... Yet we really didn't seem to miss him THAT much when he was hurt for 14.5 games in 2012... At least not enough for the price he is asking with the current state the team is in... We have a lot of holes and the money could be used to add a few players at positions of need, not just one where even have a serviceable back up that played well in Raks absence .. I'm torn, dunno what's gonna happen but I'd be sad to see him go regardless... Torn.

Not sure why Riley is asking for a lot of money. To me he's just a serviceable LB that gets exposed in coverage. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Ideally Rak will be back at 8.5 per and Riley back at 3.25 per. That's bout their value. Add d'quell Jackson at 5.5 per, I'll be a happy camper

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Jairus Byrd will be a Redskin. I will stake SmootSmack's reputation on it. (Or someone of equal value, like Jackie Chan........or Jackie Kennedy-Onassis)
Man, I feel pretty bitter they won't get this done. Of all the guys to pay Rak is one of them. We let him go and it will come back to haunt us. The guy is what we need to keep on the defense.
How so? With him? Our defense was one of the worst in the league. Without him, this team won the division. Rak doesn't dominate. Period. I would equate him to a Cliff Anvril, and last time I checked, he was paid 8mil/yr. Look at his number the last part of the season and then see who they were against. Back up left tackles. You do NOT pay a guy who's good, elite money. Let somebody else make that mistake. |

That's certainly glossing over things. Many other factors at play. |

I think most of us would like that but both Rak and Jackson are virtually certain to get more than that. I also wouldn't be surprised if Riley gets $4.5 from the Skins because he's worth more to us than he is to other teams (we're very thin at ILB and he knows our system). |

Back up left tackles. You do NOT pay a guy who's good, elite money. Let somebody else make that mistake.[/ Our record those two years is neither here nor there. His position warrants a paid day. I know we have other holes, but go back and watch RK get handled the year before with out Rak. Yeah we won, but I put that on the offense not the defense. If we need to build a staunch defense then let's start with our strength and that's our OLBs. Pay'em contracts for these types of players are only going to get heftier in the coming years with the cap climbing 20 mil the next 2 years and even higher in the future. Put it this way I want to pay our player more than I want to pay a Paul Kruger troupe guy. |

I definitely support tagging him and continuing to work on a long term deal.

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
With potential cuts, wouldn't that give 20 million in space or even more for the Skins to use with the tag?
If they cannot make that work Allen deserves to be fired. |

That's stupid. Not attacking you of course, you're just the messenger here. But what a ridiculous notion. Tagging him is reflective of how hard it is to find an elite pass rusher. They hardly ever hit the open market, the only way to get one is draft them high. Or if they actually do hit the market, pay through the absolute nose to get one. If you want a successful defense in today's passing league, you have to pony up. Some positions are just more important than others. You need a good LT, you need a good QB, you need a good pass rush and you need good CBs. The budget for those positions should be high. |

lol it's always Dan's fault. Sign big name free agents, F Dan. Attempt to keep our own free agent, F Dan. |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
"Danny Boy Move"....sounds like a trustworthy source.
No, doing what we can to keep Orakpo in B&G is the right move, no matter who is responsible for it. Rob Jackson is great off the bench and had that big INT to win vs. Dallas, but he's no Orakpo. We'll regret it if we let him walk out the door. |

Like I said last night, the market to replace Rak is thin and at our position in the draft it's kinda thin for 3-4 olbs. The franchise tag just gives us leverage to get a deal done as well as to gage the market. No problem with it |

Bottom line is while he's not a Matthews, Watt or Ware, he's still the best player we have at that position, the right age and one of our own assets that we've cultivated. I'd like to see a long term deal soon so that we can reduce his '14 cap number but at this point, I'm just glad we avoided the drama of him leaving and being a thorn in our side wearing another jersey. |

No. let him walk. He is not a top tier OLB. If they franchise him that's 11.4 mil (1/3 of the available cap) tied up on an average player. Where they could sign 2 capable free agents. The Skins are not in a position to overpay for a fair to good player that doesn't make big plays on a regular basis. |

It is a one year deal. It won't impact them as much as a multi year deal would. And going out and signing a bunch of free agents has proven to fail over and over again. He is not elite but he is on a one year contract. It won't have a huge impact on any future plans they might have. |

Why commit to a one year 11+ million dollar contract when that money can be put into maybe 2 starters? If he thinks he can get 12 million a year, what do you do after this year when he is still demanding 12 mil. per, cut him then? |
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Franchising him doesn't mean talks stop. The goal for both sides is still a long term deal.
|
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Let his contract expire if you have the ability to replace him, bottom line is the skins cannot replace him this year. I am sure Haslett wants this guy around for his new defense as well. We can still build a solid team with Rak's one year franchise deal. Hell we won the division without 18mil of cap space. Everybody wants to keep going back two years so let's do it with the cap as well.
|
Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Kind of torn on this Rak thing, IMO not elite dosent have a 2nd or 3rd move what is he working on in the off season, but we need to keep him. Can't blame him for wanting to make top dollar, QB'S do the same there's no I in TEAM until contract time. Hopefully they can work something out. HTTR.

Re: Current 2014 Free Agents
Dont believe that crap about they are debating on wether or not to franchise Orakpo. They are either signing him to a long term deal or franchising him. Period. 2014 He is a Redskin(as long as our name does not change).
