He was only one year out of two injuries last year. If we got a real free safety (even an aging Ryan Clark), have more pass rush with Hatcher and continue to groom the young players like PThomas (if healthy).. I think there's a chance BMerriweather could do okay. Yes, it's Plan C -- but Plan A (Byrd), Plan B (Mitchell, others) are no longer options. Plan D is Draft. |

I would not pick a WR with the 2nd round pick, if a great player slips to the second round I take him... otherwise trade down, and add picks . I am not as opposed to a 2nd round pick on a very high quality receiver, if we are certain he is going to pan out, as I am talking about taking a TE in the 3rd/4th. Memories of Thomas/Kelly from a few years ago still brings back nightmares. Yes this league is set up to require multiple talents at receiver to do anything prolific with your offense. But it has also shown you need a shut down secondary to stop those prolific offenses, and as Seattle has just shown us, defense wins championships even against the likes of the immortal Peyton Manning. As others have said, Oline and secondary are our two biggest areas of need. We struck out on Browner, Talib, Thurmond, and probably others I don't even know about. Hatcher was a good signing and I would love to bring in Penn (hope that pans out tomorrow). Secondary is going to have to be addressed. How many times/people pissed and moaned about our porous secondary last year watching meriweather knock himself out and have CB's toasted like marshmallows over a campfire? We need to draft at least one CS and Safety, maybe two, for me to be happy. |

minnifield's injury (his knees are shot) is career threatening, so if he doesn't play this year, that's probably it for him and the NFL. I'd love to see him play well, but i wouldn't bet money on it. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread
Nice article by Rich Tandler:
Are you wondering why your favorite free agent not signed with the Redskins? Here are five possible reasons. Money—This is often, but not always, the issue. The team thinks the player is worth X dollars per year. The player and his agent think he’s worth X plus Y dollars. The team might go up a little and the player’s camp might come down a little but ultimately they just can’t come to an agreement. Or, the Redskins called the agent, found out what the opening contract demand were and then didn’t call back. If you’re wondering why a particular player isn’t getting interest from anyone, it’s often a case that he’s pricing himself out of the market. Length of contract—This is something that could be a hang up in getting a deal done with someone like Anthony Spencer. He might want a one-year deal to have a “prove it” season after he missed almost all of last year with an injury so that if he plays well he can hit free agency again in a year. The Redskins might want him on a two-year deal so that if he does break out they are rewarded with another season of having him under contract. No interest in the team by the player—Perhaps the free agent you covet doesn’t want to play for the Redskins. It could be that the player wants to stay closer to home. Or he heard about the traffic and the high cost of housing in Northern Virginia. And even the most avid fans would have to admit that the recent history of losing and turmoil on the team could turn off some players. Not a scheme fit—Your free agent may be ranked in the top 10 on every website you can find but perhaps he doesn’t fit in what the Redskins do. It’s just not a fit at any price if the player’s strengths are not what your scheme emphasizes. The Eagles’ Chip Kelly talked about it this week and the same could apply to the Redskins and most other teams The player may not want to sign yet—This could apply to a player like Champ Bailey. He is likely to get a one-year deal and even if there is mutual interest (no reports that there are, just an example here) there’s no reason for him to rush and sign a deal. Maybe after minicamps are over, a coach will look at his defensive backs and might think Bailey is worth a little bit more than they thought. A player in Bailey’s situation has nothing to lose and everything to gain by waiting. If I may be so bold, I'd like to add my own sixth possible reason to the list: Your favorite free agent sucks - He simply sucks. |

Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread
So Strief just re-signed with the Saints for $8.5 million guaranteed and a $4.1 million per season average. How does that compare to what Donald Penn will get. I don't see us spending that kinda cash for him...

Why not? That's the market rate. Also, IMO there isn't anything more important to the future of this team than protecting RGIII. |
Re: Redskins Free Agents Signings Thread
Penn might not be worth That much, but somewhere around 8 mil guaranteed and 3.5 - 4.0 per season is definitely worth his services, especially if the play at that position increases even a little bit over Polumbus's arse. Plus, remember, when we sign this guy, and cut Polumbus, we save 2.7 million from cutting him. So actually, for Penn, it would only be counting around 1.2-1.3 million against our current cap room, which is definitely doable, maybe even less depending on how the deal is structured if you factor in Polumbus's deal.
I really hope they get this done. Having two competent tackles is of immense importance, and with Penn, it would be a definite upgrade, no question. |

I agree, why do people think Penn is such a good player ? He may be a slight upgrade, but if he was a good player he would not have been cut.... TB would have tried to renegotiate his contract. Morgan Moses would probably be an upgrade for $3 million less |

He'll start at left tackle from the start, as the Buccaneers released tackle Donald Penn later on Thursday. Penn, who will turn 31 in April, signed with the Bucs as an undrafted free agent in 2007, started 12 games his first year and hasn't missed a start since. But Penn hasn't always been consistent and he was due a big salary ($6.75 million with an $8.33 million cap hit) in 2014.
I don't know if he can or would transition to the RT willingly, but he was an alternate to the PB in 2011, and number 97 on the NFL top 100 list in 2012. Chances are very good that he's better than Polumbus. I love pet college players (I don't know Morgan Moses, so I am now speaking in generalities). If every player that had a fan proclaiming him "the solution" to their team's issues were successful, no one would ever need free agents again! |

I think he restructured last year to help their cap out. IMO we absolutely must sign the best RT available. I went on a bucs board last night Most thanked penn for his service but welcomed Collins as an upgrade Some thought he sucked All loved his nasty streak and being the first buc to defend a teammate I think pen has been a natural rt playing lt his entire career. I could see potential hurdles signing him bc he might demand lt money and the raiders might give it to him Wish we signed streif tbh |

Wise up! They don't mean jack. On one site he may be ranked 30th, on another he may be ranked 16th. Even if the rankings you reference did mean something, he was ranked based on his play at Left Tackle. We're trying to sign him to play another position - Right Tackle. Personally, I don't give a tinker's dam where he is ranked in a vacuum by any football geek. All I care about is that he has been evaluated by my team's personnel executives and coaches and they have concluded that he is a good fit for our team at RT. |

You say Penn was the 30th ranked tackle. Was that at left or right tackle position? If it was at left, he might grade better as a RT as LT is seen as a premium position over RT. Either way, he may not be the best tackle in the league but I find anyone hard pressed to openly state their belief that Penn is a downgrade from Polumbus. Sign away!! |
