Maybe, just maybe, this board wants KC long term but think he's asking too much, and they want to use the non exclusive tag to test his market value and still have the last word. If you think about it they have nothing to lose: -either no team offers KC the price he's asking and they can say "see you're not worth THAT much, take this deal"; -either a team offers him the price he wants and they can say "ok, you were right about your market value, we'll match their offer". (In the first case he could still want to test the open market next season, in the second possibility they could decide the number is crazy high and take negotiate compensation). Just saying, from a business stand point I can see how they can use the non-exclusive tag as a way to ask other teams to help them know how much KC's worth.
Seems sensible. |

Just saying, from a business stand point I can see how they can use the non-exclusive tag as a way to ask other teams to help them know how much KC's worth.
These were my initial thoughts, however, it still wouldn't matter. If Cousins didn't get an offer he liked from other teams this year, he has no obligation to negotiate with the Redskins this year. He can simply play on the tag once more and then hit the open market next year. Either way, Cousins is going to get paid mega-millions. I think the thinking with the Redskins is that they would like to keep Cousins, but they would like to build a solid team across the board, and it's hard to do that with so much money tied up in one player. They may wind up losing their two top receivers as well, so that's even more bad news. So, I think the front office is thinking the only play they really have is franchise tagging Cousins again, allowing San Fran to come in and offer him a contract they 'skins don't match, and get San Fran's two first round picks, or some other negotiated trade that's going to make it worthwhile for the Redskins. I'm going to be a very optimistic, kool-aid drinking Redskins fan for a second and say this: Obviously there is something the coaching staff really likes about Colt McCoy. And since there doesn't seem to be any other serious names in the mix for quarterback, let's assume there's something that McCoy can show us that is every bit as good as the performance Cousins has given us. OK, then you have extra high round draft picks to play with, so you use those picks to help solidify the defense, draft an outstanding running back and/or receiver, because we will probably wind up losing both Garcon and Jackson. Suddenly you have a really young team that has added quality depth across the board. Maybe it turns out to be a similar trade like the Herschel Walker trade? Who knows? Cousins is a very good quarterback, but he isn't the end all/be all of quarterbacks, so maybe losing him wouldn't be the end of the world. </end kool-aid drinking> |
Whether you like it or not, Bruce and Jay have liked Colt for years. If the Skins didn't trade their 2nd round pick for McNabb in 2010, they likely would have taken Colt that year. Though Kyle and Mike weren't as impressed.
There isn't a clear second choice
Is there a clear plan? I guess that's my biggest worry. I think the established track record of Bruce/Dan is fairly poor when it comes to QBs. While Bruce and Jay may be fans of Colt...this guy isn't a franchise QB. I think if he was...then Jay would have played him/back him as "that guy". If they don't think Cousins is the future, the answer isn't Colt. I think that's established by how Jay has run the team. |

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
While Jay no doubt likes Colt, I find it just too convenient that we're hearing leaks that the team thinks it can be successful with him.
It's a clear attempt to grab at some leverage with Kirk. This is turbulent, but I remain convinced it's all part of the dance. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
If we don't keep Kirk, Colt McCoy is a one year stop gap while a rookie draft pick learns the ropes. Nothing more.

We also have to keep in mind it's these guys job to talk about what's happening... and during that time of the offseason, pretty much NOTHING is happening (so to speak)... but they're still paid to talk about it, so they're in stressful situation where they HAVE to find shit to talk about! I remember wondering in 2014 if Colt had not injured his neck, would he have finished out the year and then been "the guy" in 2015. But you know how it goes in the NFL with injuries, sometimes they open the door to another guy ala Drew Bledsoe, or Kirk Cousins in that case... Also, another interesting tidbit that I wanted to share, not sure if it means anything at all, but when I went on Roto World just now, Kirk Cousins is now no longer listed in the depth chart for us. Does anyone else find that strange or is there a perfectly logical reason for it that I'm unaware of? Redskins.com currently does not list a depth chart. They don't list one until you get into the preseason, that's when the coach does his first crack at it, and then they periodically update it during the season. Then they take it down in the offseason. You can go to Redskins.com and see the team's roster, which still includes Cousins and Baker and Jackson and Garcon. That's also entirely meaningless. Technically they're currently Redskins now but as of March 9 will not be. Stop looking for a red herring! |

Forgot about that neck injury. For those saying this irrational or just silly to be having this discussion...Didn't the FO offer Cousins 17 per last year? Yeah. And whats more irrational talking Redskins QBs or a Redskins employee getting on the radio speculating drinking problems in Skins management.? Welcome to the life of a Redskins Fan. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
Does SF love KC enough to give up high draft choices and $$$$$$$. They will not trade for him unless he agrees to a long term contract. No one seems to know what he is asking for.

That's something we will find out very soon. Remember, San Fran just hired John Lynch as their GM - somebody with no prior experience as being a GM in he league. Also, San Fran's ownership isn't exactly made up of level-headed rationalists. It's very likely that if Kyle Shanahan thinks that he can get Kirk Cousins and turn the 49ers around very quickly, then the ownership and new GM (who also happens to have a crush on Kirk Cousins as well) would probably be willing to move the heavens and the earth to secure Cousins' service. It could very well be that the Redskins are sitting at both #2 and #17 in this year's draft, and have two 1st rounders again next year. That is a deal that I think the Redskins probably couldn't refuse. Maybe if this were to happen, the ownership comes out and says they're extending Jay Gruden another couple of seasons to see where this goes. |

Ok, but he said "I would not be shocked at all if" not "I think that is what gonna happen" nor "that's one of the most probable issues"... I feel like in the heat of all our discussions, waiting, and hoping, some reactions are as strong as if he said "I heard Bruce Allen said they were close to a deal with SF". I still think the probability of KC signing a long term deal with the Redskins this offseason is somewhere between 30% and 60% (wide range, I know, it's hard to tell), not between 0% and 5% ... |

Could still totally see Snyder doing it though. The thing about Snyder totally ignoring Cousins after his first win filling in for RG3 is true, I remember Mike or someone on the radio talking about it, and how the other players noticed it too. Snyder I believe would tank this whole thing just to try and prove himself right. Can't believe we are questioning it... |

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
We had a few relatively quiet years and now we're back to being the dumpster fire that we are known for. I think hands down this is absolutely the most dysfunctional organization within the NFL.
In this off-season, we are going to lose Kirk Cousins, Pierre Garcon, and DeSean Jackson. Gruden and company is likely gone after the season. The team's deafening silence on Boozegate (Rumors of Scott M relapsing) i think speaks volumes. Snyder has fully embraced his reputation of being the worst owner in the NFL and commanding the most dysfunctional organization. |

Thank you for that, that is a positive post, but why would the skins wait until the last day to announce the contract? If they knew they could get a deal done with Kirk i have a feeling they would already have done it. My money says he is tagged and given the tag that lets other teams negotiate with him. I think it's plainly obvious that Snyder doesn't want Cousins on this team this coming season.... |

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
Yeah, I'm no longer optimistic about this at all. My guess is he's tagged, plays out the year for the 24 mil, departs in 2018, and the Skins get zero compensation. I don't think any team is going to offer much for him this year in the form of a trade, when they can just posture themselves for making a run at him next year. There's no way he's tagged for a third time.
This is probably exactly what he is hoping for too. The only other way he stays long term is if they offer him stupid money, beyond what the actual market is for his services. |

ESPN is reporting that Kirk has already made up his mind and that he wants to play in SF... O well fuck it, I knew this would happen when he went to that Atlanta game, that was too fishy. Hopefully we get romo now and the number 2 pick, if not we are a 4-12 team again.
