Good morning Moody. Well written article (I only read the exerts you quoted).
I watched Wall-E last night and its message resonated with this article. While I agree with the article .. I also dont agree. The American dream is very much alive and achievable .... if you get lucky. Lucky - I have a friend who works at Giant just returning carts from the parking lot. He is union and I he makes almost $20 an hour with health. This guy is somewhat of a space cadet and couldnt work an office job or even a cashier job. He lives in a townhouse similar to mine but has a roommate. Lucky and lazy (truly what is wrong with America) - Neighbors down the street, parents do not work at all. have 5 kids. Yeah they live on the poverty line but they just bought their son one of those hover board things for his birthday and live in a town house exactly like mine. All sugar foods, leave trash everywhere. The State pays for everything. The landlord is kicking them out .. but they told me they have a realtor helping them find a new rental home? Covid money? Went on vacation to fucking Florida. Unlucky - On the flip side, my ex cannot find a job, she has interviewed a billion times with multiple grocery stores but no hire. No one wants to hire full time 40 hours. All these laces will offer you part time if you are lucky. Then you have to get lucky finding another part time job whose hours will harmonize with your other part time job. America has failed her. She would be in a homeless shelter if I dont pay about 2.5k every month for her apartment, food, utilities etc. Sorry for the rant .. American dream is achievable .. my ex just has to catch a break .. meanwhile people who arent even trying to find a job just live off the State and pop out a bunch of kids that go to school less than half the time and have no hope of being productive ... idk
You make good points too Sunny, and I agree for the most part. I think we can both agree that the system is broken right now, even if it's not broken for everyone. |

I agree, but I think the stimulus to people who didn’t lose a job not a great idea either. Dumb was giving people extra money and incentivizing folks not to return to work...in no world does this make any sense. I think the most important is getting the money to small business affected and people directly affected in service industries. I’d say get the money to the states and let them parse it with federal oversight. We act like this is a normal economic crisis...this didn’t happen do to any economic issue. I know the Union that represents the stores .What you're describing fell under the contract people had maybe 15-20 years ago. No one is "just pulling carts"(at Giant) and is making $20 and hour and if they are pulling carts they are part time. Many if not all the Giant associates got "Covid pay" for a while . Yet even if they did why is it that you think they are unworthy of making $20 hrs an hour ? As for your Ex , all I can say is if she wants a ful ltime job she has to earn it. Giant has been begging for people but all jobs are starting at part time and you work your way up to the Full time positions.Been that way atr Giant and Safeway for years. Question, your ex? You say she has been interviewed alot, yet no one will hire full time, she won't take part time?I mean isn't a little better that nothing .isn't that what you're ranting about? |
Re: Coronavirus (political)
No job offer, part time or full time, for the grocery stores. She interviewed multiple times with the 3 ones near us. She had a 8 year gap in employment and is now 1 month away from celebrating 2 years sober.
She just got her drivers license, taking an online pharmacy tech program. She is putting on weight, she went from doctors giving her 1 year to live to now being super healthy. My point was, I see all these signs hiring (pre covid) and wonder why people cant find jobs. Then I see her experience of struggling to find even part time offers. If people think there are full time jobs just waiting for the unemployed ... that is not the case. Its part time if you are lucky. She is making tremendous progress and she will catch her break. She just cant give up. To be fair, she always worked before she stopped working 8 years ago but all as a bartender and im sure she could have got a bartender/server job 2 years ago but that would have not worked for her sobriety. |

Re: Coronavirus (political)
"If the not-so-good job was done, you'd be between 1.5 million—I remember these numbers so well—and 2.2 million. That's quite a difference," the president said.
"So we're down in this territory," Trump continued, pointing to the 100,000 to 240,000 projected death toll displayed on the chart. "And that's despite the fact that the blue states had tremendous death rates. If you take the blue states out, we're at a level that I don't think anybody in the world would be at. We're really at a very low level. But some of the states, they were blue states and blue-state-managed." "The most recent data, through Tuesday, indicates that about 53 percent of deaths have occurred in blue states—meaning that 47 percent have occurred in red ones. In other words, more than 90,000 deaths have occurred in red states. If that were the country's total, we would have seen the second-most number of deaths globally, trailing only Brazil." https://www.commondreams.org/news/2020/09/17/one-most-callous-sentiments-ever-uttered-us-president-trump-falsely-says-covid-death This plays along the lines of Trump stopping efforts to help with COVID on the federal level and passing responsibility to governors when he realized it was only effecting blue states in March and April. He basically saw it as a way out so he could take no responsibility, claiming its up to the States .. then having the Feds seize PPE the individual states had secured. Hes a horrible human being. Hes spent 3.8 years as POTUS just running a re-election campaign catering to the low educated, easily mislead red base. Only thing he is good at is name calling and making "liberals" freak out .. only thing low educated red voters care about - 'does it piss off the educated liberal elite?" |

Re: Coronavirus (political)
i think it's time we accept as a nation that our way of life has permanently changed. Everything we remember from "before", is just that. Before our lives were all changed.
Dr. Fauci has doubled down in recent days, making clear that his opinion is that a vaccine WILL NOT end the pandemic, and even with Americans being vaccinated, we cannot abandon the public health measures and restrictions. He has said numerous times that we cannot, and should not, go back to living like we did before. Couple that with state governors who will lock things down / restrict indefinitely, i think we can all safely say that the life we lived before will now be just a memory. Life will go on as it always has, but it will be different. I read an article about how Americans fought against seat belts for so long, before eventually relenting. Permanent use of masks, home-school, working from home, and avoiding public places i believe will be the life of a USA citizen for the rest of our lives. At some point, people may no longer leave their homes anymore at all, because of fear of the virus. I think the sooner we process that, we can begin healing as a country. Sports will go on, but if a football team builds a new stadium, it might only have capacity for 10K people. Not 80K people. Concerts, amusement parks, and large gatherings is something that will be in the past forever. At some point, Public School will move to all online forever. Joe Biden is going to have to wrestle with all of this, and I hope that he is prepared that his country a year from now will look a lot more like North Korea as far as citizens not moving around / doing stuff, because of fear, etc.. I'm not saying we will be like NK because of communism, just want to make that clear. |

Re: Coronavirus (political)
Wisconsin is now reporting more daily new infections than Florida, according to the news organization.
All states in the Midwest -- except Ohio -- have reported more cases in the past month when compared to the prior four weeks. An increase in testing could explain why cases are increasing, however, hospitalizations have also surged in the Midwest, which isn't influenced by how many tests are performed. Wyoming and North Dakota had record numbers of COVID-19 patients in their hospitals within the past week, while hospitalizations in Wisconsin set records twice last week. According to Reuters, the U.S. is now reporting 46,000 new infections on average each day, compared to 35,000 daily infections two weeks ago. https://www.foxnews.com/us/some-midwestern-states-25-positive-test-rates-report This thing will not die. Thank god it is not deadlier. I do think in our lifetime we will see a very contagious virus like Covid but deadlier. Scary to think about. What we are going through now should be a good preparation for future pandemics. |
