That sucks, if they know who they are cutting they should do it today so those players hit the wire early and have a shot of landing elsewhere.
I think that they do it last second so as not to give other teams a heads up on practice squad.

DB, can I ask why you are concerned about these guys having a shot somewhere else. It probably sounds heartless, but for guys who get cut, and the Skins still want to keep, say like Colt/Chase or Alridge/Dorsey/Mason, I would rather they stay near our organization if they are PS eligible, rather than going somewhere else. Even with that though, at this point if an organization has its eyes on a player of ours, I would imagine they would take him regardless of when he is cut.

When he was asked which young backs have impressed, Cerrato praised Mason extensively, saying he's been good all over the field, including on special teams, and mentioned no other names. Later still a caller asked if Alridge had a chance, and Cerrato said "we'll see" about five times, while mentioning the numbers game.

NOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! What is the love for Marcus Mason? He's the slower version of Aldridge.

Everyone has their underdog that they like to root for. Usually its a good player who ends up getting caught in the numbers game. IMO I dont see us keeping a QB on the PS. I like Colt and at the same time i like what i saw of Chase and with teams scrambling to find a backup QB id like to see one of these guys get a shot even if it is elsewhere after we cut him. Same with the RB position.

Alridge is 5'9" 175 and injury prone, Mason is 5'9" 215 and has been the rushing leader for the last 2 preseasons.

Id rather take the chance with the change of pace back then bringing back Mason who is no different then Portis or Betts.

Well, it appears it's a tactic used by at least one other team.

Steelers make cuts, but don't announce them - NFL - SI.com

I also found this nugget:
"One reason for the secrecy is the Steelers may be trying to slide running back Isaac Redman from the active roster to the practice squad. Redman, an undrafted rookie from Bowie State, was the surprise star of training camp and scored three of the Steelers' five touchdowns rushing during the preseason."

but ... but ... won't all 31 other teams be busy holding their breath and watching the waiver wire to see when Mason is available??

dime a dozen, man... dime a dozen.

Titans were praising Mark Jones pretty extensively after last night's game...and he was cut today. So take from that what you will

Zorn said the roster decisions this year are tougher than last year.

"The backups are the ones that take a while to hone in on," he said.

Running back is one position that is being closely scrutinized.

Last offseason, the Redskins sought a change of pace back to complement Clinton Portis, Ladell Betts and Rock Cartwright. They brought in Anthony Alridge and Dominique Dorsey to provide more quickness out of the backfield and on special teams.

Alridge flashed his speed from the get-go.
But as soon as he Alridge fumbled a kickoff against Jacksonville, resulting in a Jaguars touchdown, it was thought to be a devastating blow to his roster chances.

Alridge rebounded to have a solid game the rest of the night.

He’s still in the conversation, Zorn said.“The fumble is a concern, and I saw his reaction,” Zorn said.

“We put him back in there and he didn’t have the same result again. So it will be a longer discussion than just ‘No’ or ‘Yeah.’ It won’t be something that we just gloss over.”

Marcus Mason, who had led the Redskins in preseason rushing yards each of the last three seasons, saw limited action in the preseason finale due to a rib injury.

Still, Mason had a “very good preseason,” Zorn said.

I feel the same way about Rock. Go figure.

Agreed, but I would also rather have a young healthy RB to be developed for the future, Mason, over Betts. If all Betts is being used for is 3rd down then teach Mason how to block the damn pass rush and dump Betts.

and this is why the team may still be high on him. If he went back in and couldn't get past the fumble then he would be gone, but he didn't he actually had a decent game and caught a pass out of the back field from Chase, stopped on a dime, changed directions and ran 30 yrds down field and got out of bounds to stop the clock to save time outs. The 2 min drill at the end of the game actually looked good.

Um, I'm pretty sure Mason can tackle also, it was his blocking skills in the back field he had issues with. and the more I think about it Rock's not that great at pass blocking either. He has whiffed many times or got steamed rolled by a DE. I just wish they would have given Mason more of a chance at KR last night but they were looking at Alridge. However I thought I saw Mason making sure Alridge didn't run the ball out when it was deep in the endzone a couple of times.
