A- I think the reasoning was he didn't do a good job with their D-line. Apparently he didn't get enough out of them, but as some have pointed out there were injuries on the D-line and he had to work with what he had available. All reports are he's a good coach. He just might not have gotten along with the HC.
C- Haslett is a 3-4 guy. Shanahan is bringing in Assistants who work with the 3-4. Shanahan is enamored with the 3-4. My best guess is the 3-4 is a lock. I'm happy with it. "Hopefully" we will finally have an "Attacking" defense vs. the bend don't break BS.
Ok now see we're going after a coach who couldn't do anything with 5 pro bowl lineman, but if he comes here everyone thinks he'll do good with our 1 pro bowl lineman.NO, theres a reason he was fired, and you mentioned it above, that "he didn't do a good job with their D-line. Apparently he didn't get enough out of them". Of course reports from the organization is that he was a good coach, the they want him to get a job. Then again I shouldn't be too mad about this because Haslett isn't any better that guy got fired a lot more. Haslett has run the 4-3 the past 2 teams he's coached on the saints and rams, so Don't assume that since he ran the 3-4 ten years ago that he'll do that here. Keep in mind everyone that Shanny wanted Zimmer who ran a 4-3 with Cincy and Dallas (Wade Philips brought in the 3-4 to Dallas). |

You got it. :) I think Shanahan was looking for the best available DC. Reports were he even contacted Romeo Crennell and Romeo didn't want to interview. So that might have only left Haslett and Zimmer as coach's that have been DCer's before. I don't know. I might have tried someone who is an Asst. with another team before I went with Haslett, but they didn't. For some reason (and I don't know why) Haslett even with his piss poor record as a DC got a HCing job. He has not done anything remarkable as a HC or DC and he keeps popping up. I guess like everyone else we are hoping for whatever reason he flashes this time. If all I could present to you was Haslett has run a 3-4 in the past I would agree with you that I'm reaching because he has run a 4-3 before. However with the team picking up assistants that utilize the 3-4 and Shanahan interested in running the 3-4 then I'm leaning toward the fact we will have a base 3-4 hybrid most likely. |
I beleive Danny Smith is a great ST coach - there's just no justification for continuing to put ARE back there to return punts. If ARE gets the axe, i'm fine with retaining Smith.
April would have been nice, but remember, it was SNYDER who wanted April, not Shanahan. Since Smith is being retained, its a nice example indicating Snyder isn't trying to forcing his will upon Shanahan yet.
Soooo, your ok with a ST coach that stays with ARE fair catching punts, keeping Shuism instead of attempting to get better at that position, keeping the same punter until he got hurt and got lucky with a backup, developes a blocking scheme that nets you 26yrds only on returns? I guess his scheme is good enough cause the bright side is other teams usually don't get a good return. Edit: Big,... have you been taking your medicine lately? Whats with all the positive feed back? ;) sorry gotta pick. I don't know if April refused to interview or not but if he didn't the Skins need to get him. Screw Smith. |
Re: Coaching Staff update
Fact is Smith is a quality ST coach in this league. 3 teams have already been turned down to interview him.
I'm thinking ARE may have been one of those players going behind Zorn's back to lobby for playing time. There's no other reasonable explanation as to why they continued to trot him out there to fair catch or have balls bounce off his grill.
He went behind Smith's back to go to Zorn. I wouldn't even say it was behind his back per se. Smith tried a couple of times to bench him, thought he had. ARE decided to take it up with the head coach and plead his case and Smith was overruled. Not Redskins related but apparently Perry Fewell will be the new Giants DC Heard the name Jedd Fisch-current OC at the U. of Minnesota mentioned a couple of times as a possibility for the Redskins. Not sure in what capacity. |

I guess I could be wrong, but if I had a coach and might have an opportunity to get a better coach but it's not a sure thing then I certainly wouldn't let my only coach I have on hand go interview for other jobs. My luck the coach I wanted (April) would either decline the job or decline the interview (as I've heard has happened) and lose out on my only coach I already had (Smith). The Skins did the same thing with the DC spot. They had Gray, interviewed Haslett, and wanted to interview Zimmer. Zimmer didn't happen, leaving Gray and Haslett. It wasn't until Haslett was signed that Gray was free to interview for other jobs, ie; Seattle. |
wow. i guess i can't say i'm surprised, though. i wonder if we'll ever find out exactly how bad of a coach Zorn really was. |

I don't care what JLC says about Danny Smith, he never was right about anything redskins from the time he was with the washington post

I know. I keep hearing so much BS out of the media now. First it was Snyder's interested in April. Then it was a meeting is set up for after Pitt and SF. Then we hear he is in Cali for a speaking engagement to follow his interview with SF. Yesterday no meeting has been scheduled. Yesterday it was April wants too much money. Today its he may have canceled his interview with the Skins. Only to see another media person write April has a meeting set up. If he has not said "no" to the Skins and is willing to interview they need to get him. |

he reported just about every other hire we've made hours/days before we found out about it elsewhere. no reason not to beleive that. |

Thought so just wanted to make sure. I'm fine with either guy for the record. No sense in busting the bank on April when we already have a solid guy in Smith, we'll see. |
