So, are we not getting o-linemen because of the cap rape?

That would be a bummer.

Your about to be real pissed like I am when you find out how cheap Eric Winston was.

4 years $22 Million 10 mill guaranteed

You've gotta be kidding me.
Winston was signed for a mere 2 mil more then Adam Carriker.

What has he done to deserve more money? In his 6 years in the league how many pro-bowls has he played in? none. The guy is average at best not a pro-bowler.

He is considered widely across the league as the best RT in the NFL. Nfldraftscout who watches a lot of film on incoming and current NFL players he rated Winston the best RT in the league. Profootballfocus has him also as the best RT in the NFL.

winston is the best RT in the league? was that list for the CFL? he's not bad, but is still serious hurt. I would have liked him at that price, but you can't win all the time.

Because Houston has no cap room whatsoever.

But it seems as if you're suggesting that good players never get cut?
That is the premise of your rhetorical question right?
If Winston was 'so good' then why would Houston cut him right?
But c'mon we're a bit more football savvy then to believe that right?

Look it Winston is who he is, just do your own research.
The bottom line is this:

(a) our RT play blows therefore we need a RT (especially since we're going to be playing a rookie QB at some point this season)

(b) Winston was arguably the best RT on the market and his compensation was reasonable

(c) Carriker is merely a rotational player on our DL, no one is going to confuse Adam for one of the best DL in the NFL, but we paid him almost as much as Eric Winston

(d) Not being able to pull off the Eric Winston signing must be viewed as a mistake/missed opportunity especially in light of some of our other signings

Why was Winston cut as opposed to traded? and why did the move happen so late

Sounds like we were interested in Winston but he wasn't interested in us. If a player is not interested, I don't fault the team for not getting him, because you can't force someone to come here. And I guess you don't want to go overboard by overpaying too.

Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker

As a seller of his services, if Winston indeed wanted to play for a "winner", then that means loser teams who have to pay a substantial premium in order make up for his loss in "happiness" in playing for a loser. KC is only a couple years removed from their division title win, and they do have budding talent, so he indeed gave a "winner" discount for his services.

In short, Eric Winston was never in our marketplace to begin with.

KC was so upset with their state of the franchise that they fired their head coach. No way are they a winner.

Does Eric Winston give two shits about that? It's HIS perception(heavily influenced by his agent) about a teams' potential to win games that matters. He's seeing Jamaal Charles, Brandon Flowers, the dude who had a great season in New England, Bowe, etc, and a team that once won the division a couple years back. Firing a head coach, ultimately, is mostly a symbolic gesture. Judging the "winningess" of team requires more weight to be put on the current talent on the team, "reputation", and recent history, etc.

Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker

I don't know where the Winston wants to play for a winner talk came from, I've never actually seen a quote from him saying that.
That claim just seems like agent talk for pay me more money.
If he really wanted to play for a winner he would restructure his contract for Houston.

We can all speculate on why they couldn't pull off the Winston signing.
But all we can know is that it didn't happen.

WilbursHomie 03-18-2012 03:29 AM

Maybe I'm wrong and not in the know but it seems like no teams are really showing serious interest in Leron. The Saints seem like the most enthusiastic just because it's his home state but if no one picks him up, what price could we get him at? And I know he's absolutely horrible in coverage but there's just something about him that gives me hope. He's a monster on a stunt and I'm pretty sure he's actually a sociopath when it comes to hitting guys. Morris might turn that guy around. Maybe not. I just like giving top 10 draft picks the benefit of the doubt.

Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker

The NFL network also reported that the Jets and Patriots are interested in Laron Landry. He'll end up just like Carlos Rogers, playing or a playoff team come next season. I thought the Eagles were interested in him too?

ethat001 03-18-2012 07:56 AM

Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker

Kind of a silly question - but are we still in the running for Landry? Any possibility of us dropping him and then reworking his contract to add injury clauses (like everyone else who's considering signing him), and then making it competitive with the market?

Would be nice to have him back, only if his contract got reworked to cover us when he's out for his achilles he didn't have surgery on.

Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker

Hopefully, we can sign Demetrius Bell and put the Eric Winston signing in our rearview mirror. Bell would be a good signing if he could stay healthy, for a change.

I must admit that, after Winston signed for much less than I thought he would get, I'm wondering if the NFL's cap robbery prevented us from making Winston an offer he couldn't have refused.

In my mind, I still can't justify the amount of money the Skins threw at Adam Carriker. I think the Carriker deal could have waited, giving us more flexibility to make other deals while we created more cap space.

Without knowing the details of the Winston contract, I think it's too early to pass judgement on it.

As for Carriker, I'm glad we held onto him and I think that contract was fair. I just hope we can keep him for more than just one year

Same here about Carriker, he has really revived his career with us and outplayed what we gave up for him. The rotation of Bowen, Carriker, Jenkins, Cofield, and Neild is pretty exciting for next year.
