Yes that can be done, but the FO to their credit has avoided doing as much so the 18 mil penalty does not keep lingering.

I got a feeling that if he is close to healthy he will win the job, and from some of the stuff I have read he should be a good stop gap for a year or more.

How many Right Tackles do we need on this team?

The question should be how many 30+ yr old tackle do we need? lol At this point other than the draft or someone taking a super low deal I think we are what we are at RT.

Right. Lets be done at RT, FO already brought their guys in with the early signings. Obviously they got a plan, lets let it play out.

Twelve:

One experienced veteran who knows the ZBS and becomes our starting RT for 10 more years (at vet min each year) to satisfy the dreams of the fans;

One rookie who knows the ZBS, starts game 1, has a pro-bowl season and becomes our starting RT for the next 10 years (at vet min each year) to satisfy the wet dreams of the fans;

One experienced veteran who has good name recognition, but is disfavored by the coaching staff to satisfy the raving idiot fans;

One experienced veteran who has a negative name recognition b/c of injuries, age or lack of starting experience, but is favored by the coaching staff, to actually compete for the position;

Two second or third year players to compete for a spot on the team as a developmental player for the future to satisfy the need for depth;

Four veterans of various ability and experience to be camp bodies and to compete for our "dear God help us all if he is starting" spot to satisfy the need for a body, any body, at the position;

Tyler Polumbus because his name rhymes with Columbus and that's just cool; and finally ...

Jabar Gaffney because he knows the system goshdagnabbit!
How many Right Tackles do we need on this team?
Answer: we need to try out as many Right Tackles as necessary to find one starter and one backup who can provide good pass protection for our Franchise Quarterback. If that number is two, fine. If that number is fifty six, so be it.

One reason I've been banging the drum for drafting Mike Gillislee of Florida as a Third Down Back is because he pass protects like Clinton Portis.

IMHO, there is no greater need on our football team than to provide the best possible pass protection for RGIII.

Loved Gillislee in college. Funny though that I never paid attention to his blocking. If what your saying is true though, I want him even more now.

I have a strong feeling Shanny just wants depth in camp and whoever comes out on top will get the job, the others will get cut. They will have a minimal cap impact since they were not top tier FA signees.

He's still in play for us.

He's out of the country on vacation. He will decide when he comes back.

He has offers to Denver and Minnesota. He wants to play for a contender.

I think Keim said that Winfield will be back next week. Expect a decision in the next 5 days.

Yes, on one of his highlight reels there were actually several plays where he crushed somebody with a block in pass protection.

The guy is all football player. He's a good tough runner and he catches the ball well. He just looks like someone who belongs on our team as a 3rd Down Back.

I would be cool either way. To me adding him at this point will require a roster move, and I don't know what it would be. Which makes me nervous.

I wouldn't mind Winfield, but I don't understand the FO's thinking. We've brought back Hall, signed Biggers, and we're most likely going to draft a CB or two. What's the point of bringing in Winfield?

If the thinking is to bring in a guy who can start immediately, then Winfield is wasted money. I'm fine with our current CBs, just need to get a good safety or two and a CB in the draft.

Winfield is a better CB/DB than what we have now. He's just a great defender. If we sign him it gives us flexibility in the draft if we can't get one of our top targeted DBs. Also it can help us possibly trade a guy like josh Wilson. Or cut DHall. Or just have a lot of talented DBs.

Yes sir, that is huge. This way we have a better chance of drafting BPA starter talent at any position. Much better than reaching for need and increasing the chance of drafting a bust. The wildcard risk in this move is Winfield's age/health to $ cost. Like any move it is a gamble.
Winfield is a player, CB position would go from below average weakness to above average strength.

At Safety: Draft a safety. Tanard comes back from suspension for cheap (?), Brandon Meriweather comes back from injury (?), Jordan Bernstein and Dejon Gomes step up/mature (?), ok depth with Doughty and Pugh.
With deeper CB position it increases flexibility to occasionally play DHall at safety in dime or nickle.

We pay for our rookies and Winfield by reworking a Trent Williams, Garcon, Josh Wilson deal. Not by cutting.
Next year our cap will have a windfall with the removal of the penalty.

Therein lies the beauty of Shanahan / Bruce. They certainly could have made a ton of magic cap room this year, simply by restructuring a ton of deals like Cerrato used to do. They still can if necessary. But at least we're not rushing to win the offseason out of the gates with seemingly unlimited cap space -- leaving restructured dead space for years to come.

Takes a ton of patience to avoid doing that, reassuring everyone the sky isn't falling on the O-line or secondary, and taking guys like Trueblood and Pashos instead of the highest paid FA out there. Cerrato would have spent a couple of draft picks and $50 million dollars last year when Merriweather / Jackson went out of the picture last year. I remember when we threw away a 3rd rounder for TJ Duckett because Portis hurt his shoulder the week before the season opener, then went on to run for 132 yards -- all season.. Talk about irrational paranoia.

Glad to see we have a hard-nosed front office who doesn't panic and seems to always look ahead.

Talk about over kill in that secondary, but that'd be a hell of a task to play against that defense when healthy if that were to happen.

That seems like way overkill for those guys. But whatever, the rich keep getting richer.

I would take the kid who won ROY over the runner up personally. Of course it would be such sweet revenge to beat the Hawks in the playoffs next year at SEA if he signed there. HAHAHAHAHA.

Seems like he would want to go to a place where he would start, not play nickel and dime packages. You know he's not going to get ahead of Seattle's two starting CBs. He has a good likelihood of starting here. I wouldn't sweat it too much.

Anybody know this about Pat White? He had a lawsuit against the NFL for failure to protect him from head injuries. Really? This douche bag has the nerve to sue the NFL for head injuries and he was only in the league for one damn year. Not only that, he barely played. Now, after 4 years, he's decided his head injuries are ok so he's back to trying out for the NFL again?

well, he probably would start over Browner, and when theres 3 WR sets, he'd move to nickel and Browner would stay on the outside.

I am a WVU fan, but that honestly I have forgotten about White as a pro because he did nothing. NOTHING, I actually watched Dolphins preseason games that year ('09) to see him play, he was bad or at least very underwhelming compared to what he did at WVU. He looked lost, couldn't read the defense, made bad throws, and he had a little razzle in the running game but he is small and knew he wouldn't last in the NFL.

The conspiracy theorists in me wonders if the Redskins will get something on the back end now that they rid the NFL of a law suit. (yeah right)

BUT.... JOEREDSKIN maybe be able to (hypothetically) answer if this would set a precedent of any kind for the other cases against the NFL?
