Re: Redskins Trade for Alex Smith

Hills not a bad option, but I almost prefer the draft. There's a lot of midrange talent every year (although we've whiffed on a few) and it's clearly a young fresh and healthy mans position.

WR will be tricky for sure. I don't think there's a slam dunk number 1 available in FA or draft.

True.

But I just feel like we need playmakers on defense (NT/DT, CB) and I'm not really wowed by anybody available, so I'd rather keep as many picks as possible for this side of the ball.

And on offense we can't afford average guys or gambles, so if there are guys they really like at WR and RB, I want them to spend what it takes to get them.

Now we both know his ass ain't staying healthy but of course we all would love to see it. Smith loves TE's expect Davis and Sprinkle to catch a lot of balls

I hope for it too, but i just think that some guys are glass boned and no matter what kind of offseason, training they do, their bodies will just never be up to par on game day.

I know he is only 27 but with all of his various injuries realistically his body is probably a lot closer to being 37. When healthy the guy is for sure a difference maker, but he has averaged like 10 games over five seasons. Does anyone know where we are on him contract wise? Can the skins move on from him without a huge hit after this year if he has another injury plagued season?

Yeah we can escape. In 2019 he will count 10M against the cap, but if we cut him next March he would only count 3.5M in dead money, meaning we would save 6.5M in cap space. Say what you want about Bruce, he has earned it in many ways, but if he and Schaffer are good for anything it's making sure contracts are structured in such a way that we can escape.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

All that said I think a bounce back season is in store. He is fragile for sure, but last year was abnormal even for him. Usually he misses 2 - 4 games. Last year missed 10.

Even if he gets back to playing just 12 games it's a big impact on our offense.

Schneed10 02-24-2018 12:40 PM

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

Chris Thompson too. Between him and Reed, safeties have to be mindful because linebackers aren't fast enough for either of them. Gruden can put safeties in a bind with either player in a myriad of ways, it loosens the coverage against the WRs. If we manage to add that one deep threat then everything gets easier for everyone, including Doctson.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

If we add a legit receiver, we get solid play from someone at LG, and we stay healthy i think we'll have a top 10 offense. Add a stud RB and it could be top 5.

Now that's a few things that need to go right but its not out of the realm of possibilities.

I think our redzone offense is greatly upgraded with AS, if we can get a good RB, we should be punching in a lot more 6's.

I think the red zone may be the biggest upgrade with AS. Imagine if AS is able to complete fade passes, We may set scoring records!!!

I'll take even 1 fade pass touchdown lol.

Fully agree. Need that disruptive DL too. Not a great season last year but at the same time not terribly far away. Such is the NFL.

Re: Redskins trade for Alex Smith

The ability to escape when the pocket breaks down is huge. It keeps you out of 2nd and 13 and gets you into 2nd and 8.

We need to put a running game together to help him. But Cousins needed that too. Hell all QBs need that.

I think Smith makes us slightly better.

Then if we add a good RB and that makes us even more slightly better at minimum, that's a big jump for an already pretty damn good offense.

That doesn't even include plugging in a solid LG and another WR.

If we have a good off season and draft this offense can be loaded.

The amazing thing about the NFL. No matter how bad you looked, you're never really that far away.

The Eagles were 7-9 in 2016. Don't even need to say what happened the next season.

It really can turn around that quickly. We've got some resources to work with, and we should come back healthier. We'll see what happens.

Exactly, like I had said before, who would have picked PHI??? Nobody did, in fact even "experts" had them 3rd.

Also here is to the "Smith was only good because of Hill" folks.

Conclusion: "In 2017, [Smith] had a 131.4 passer rating on deep passes, tops in the league. Take out every single attempt to Hill, and Smith’s deep-ball passer rating was … 126.6 — or still the best in the league on deep passes. Hill helped, but Smith was a deep-ball success without him."

Good news for us! Now, let's get that deep threat we need.

That shows that 11 can still sling it around, Kirk was damn good at this too so it's nice to know we won't be losing that aspect

I will be excited if the front office gets Smith some weapons, whether free agency, draft, or both. If not, I'm going to be nervous (for Alex!)

Of course we’re going to get him some weapons. The FO wants their new QB to look as good as possible to justify the whole mess. I won’t be surprised to see them go hard on offense in FA and the draft.

Yeah, I didn't quite get that post either? "We're going to go out and get quality weapons to cover up the mess we made with Cousins!" Um...well, good! To do less would be dumb.

Of course the goal is to win, but if you don’t think part of the motivation will be to make Smith look great so they can win in the court of opinion that moving on from Cousins was the right call you’re seriously underestimating Snyder and Allen
