Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I think what is going in Snyder's favor is the market. Sports in general see the East Coast as a desirable TV market (see Big 10 deal that brought in Rutgers and Maryland).
On the other hands, potential buyers are aware that Snyder is in a quasi "must sell" situation. With that in mind, they are not going to be over bid for the team.
7 billion and have to build a 3-4 billion dollar stadium going to be a hard sell. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
This was sort of stunning, but then again not surprising: Washington has averaged 20 or more points per game only FIVE times since 2000. They're 28th in PPG since that year. They've averaged fewer than 18 ppg 12 times. EB can provide a jump; he'll need help from others. KEIM

Let’s hope that the tour doesn’t include prospective owners being showered in toilet water while walking through the stadium. In all seriousness, the worry about Wright flying to LA to ink Bienemy doesn’t concern me. In fact, landing him may help sell a buyer that some pieces are coming together for immediate improvement. Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Ben Standig just reported that we are expected to franchise tag Payne. Great move if/when this happens. I'm a little bit leery of signing Payne to multi years contract since he blew up in the contract year, plus there are some reports stating that Payne doesn't interact much with rest of the Dline players. I think I would prefer for us to tag him 1 or 2 times then let him go.

Tagging him once is the way to go. Leary of the 2nd tag though. Gets more expensive and never gets us anywhere. I think getting 6 years of solid to very good play is a worthy investment of a 1st round pick. If we can't extend him, I'd let him walk after this year, with a hearty handshake on the way out. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
If we're going down the tag road with him it better lead to a trade or long term deal. Can't just tag him twice and let him walk.
|
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
Payne had a great year, and he deserves his pay day. However, I am hoping that the intent is to tag him, then let him see if he can negotiate a deal with another club. I don't think we'd get two first round picks for him, but I'm sure we can flip him for something better than a future late 3rd round compensatory pick. Then use the $19 million saved to upgrade the O-line, and LB/CB. We'd still have a very solid D-line with Sweat, Allen, Mathis, Ridgeway, Obada, Young...

6 years of solid play and a likely 3rd down compensatory pick is a pretty good use of a 1st round pick. I hope they keep him, but it takes 2 to party, and some guys staying just isn't in the cards. |
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
5 years of solid play, keep the $19 million, and acquire a couple more picks would be even better.
Can't keep them all, and I think we can get by without him while using that $$ and potential picks to upgrade other areas of need. |

But I think the most feasible plan for next year is that we either extend him or he plays here on the tag. |

He played for Carolina he isn’t ever going anywhere. He checks all of Rons boxes,…. A) played for Carolina B) familiar with the system Means he can nap for extra long instead of coaching someone up. |

Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I would try to bring Holcomb back for the right price. Mayo is going to get the bulk of his reps on ST, not on defense unless there's injury. They are in 2 LB sets the majority of time, so it will likely be Davis and Holcomb again - or his replacement if they let him move on.
|
Re: Commanders 2023 Off-Season Thread
I would draft a LB in the first 4 rounds. Holcomb is a great depth guy to have around but I am still not sold on him as a starter.

While I’m all for using a pick on a LB later in the draft, but could you imagine tagging Payne and then adding Wagner next to Jamin Davis? Adding a vet a LB the caliber of Wagner to this defense, I think it’s a top 5, maybe top 3. |

Chad Henne would be the perfect type of veteran to come in and help mentor Howell, assuming he wants to keep playing.

The Commanders are releasing DB Bobby McCain, source confirms.
( @AdamSchefter 1st). Washington developed a young safety corps, which pushed McCain to nickel corner. SFredskins gonna be happy! |

I just threw up in my mouth a little when I read that. Honestly, McCain had flashes here and there -- frustrating player in that respect. Got beat too often for a starter. It feels to me like the safety position hasn't been emphasized in recent years. I can't think of a safety in the game now that I would characterize as dominant the way that guys like Ed Reed, Earl Thomas, Ronnie Lott, and, of course, Sean Taylor were. Derwin James, and a handful of other guys like Minkah Fitzpatrick are good (even very good), but teams aren't really designing plays to avoid them. It's such an awesome position (to me, at least) when done right. |
