redskinmike - great tip my friend.

i sent an email to gary but it got returned so i went on there site and emailed to info@blackwell and finally got a return email.

the have pliny for $7 per bottle (limited to 2 per order) and blind pig for 7(1 per order). they also have some really outstanding beers.

18 bucks to ship 6 bottles, 25 to ship 12.

im placing an order soon.

i will place an order probably once a month and this makes for great presents as well. you give someone some Pliny for their bday! best present ever.
Their limits change from time to time and sometimes they don't have limits. It all depends on their stock. I have always had good experiences with them so happy drinking.

yes i talked with them a few hours ago.

the website said 2 pliny per order and 1 blind pig per order but the lady i talked with sd that she will check with gary and see if i cant get 4 pliny and 2 blind pig per order if i order 12 instead of 6. order is in. hoping gary approves it.

this is like my own beer FA period. .. . glad i started drinking craft beer and stopped hard liquor. i havent been arrested in years!

Get your Pliney yet? I am expecting a case of Three Floyds Yum Yum tomorrow. Online is a great option if you are willing to pay a little extra to get something out of reach. I look at it as if I saw it in a bar I would definitely order it at bar prices so this is still a deal.

lol I also justify spending a little extra for good beer by comparing it to the price/quality of stadium beer.

$10 for 22 oz of pliny (inclds shipping) vs $9 for 20 oz of coors light.

by using this comparison in decision making, i seem to always splurge.

No i didnt get my order yet. I got a little greedy. You are only allowed 2 pliny per order but i talked up the girl who answered the phone and she sd she would see if i could get 4 pliny if i got 12 bottles total ..... gary denied me.

so i had to re-order and it should be here wednesday.

*** i did get another case of monument city 51 rye yesterday for $47. i had to special order it bc when it hits the shelves in baltimore, it only lasts a day or two then you have to wait a few weeks for a new shipment. this 51 rye is outstanding. i think only a few stores carry it, still brewed in very small batches it seems.

thats good news. glad to see the brothers are distributing outside the city lines. they sd distribution was going to be very limited. they do pint nights in the city, buy a pint of 51 keep the glass. i need to catch up to one of those.

what would you rate the 51 rye? for me its 4.5. i wonder if i am over-hyping the beer. the citra is really jumping out to me and is starting to dominate. its weird. a beer tastes a certain way but then when you drink enough of it, you start noticing all these subtle flavors that eventually your brain is now predisposed looking for and the beer now tastes different then when you first started drinking it. the citra, centennials cascades were always front and center (which I like and look for) but now it is overpowering to my taste buds.

even with 51% rye malt, that earthy nutty tone is being overpowered.

Its a solid 4 for me. I am a big hop head so the hops don't blow me away but it is a well balanced rye ipa. Alot of times with rye its one way or the other either the hops overpower the rye or the rye takes over.

just got 3 bottles of Pliny, 1 damnation and 2 mikkellers delivered to my office.

dob on pliny is 2/24/15! i assumed it would be 3 mos old.

thanks mike. you hooked it up with the blackwell referral. unfortunately i have to give 2 plinys to 2 of my brothers. i think im just going to order once a month, at 65 bucks total for 6 impossible-to-get beers, it is worth it.

Drinking a 3 Floyds Zombie Dust. It is good but with the hype around it I am a little let down.

over the mountain 04-13-2015 11:21 AM

Re: Let's talk good beer

hype can alter a lot of things - good movie, beer, restaurant.

taste is like the 3rd or 4th sense we use to actually judge something (or something like that).

my first bottle of pliny I rated as a 4.5/5. i was a little let down as well. my brain unreasonably over-hyped it so when it didnt cure cancer and male pattern baldness on the first sip, i was a little let down.

now that I had a few more bottles, it is 6/5. a 10/5. there is this magical malty piney after effect that just lingers on my lips and taste buds for a few seconds after a sip. the after-sip of a pliny is amazing.

i need to find a better connect. i need to buy in volume without quantity restrictions.

mike - are you on untappd? if so, send me a friend request if you want - im "craigismyfirstname" or perhaps my full name just appears. im not sure.

yes, i just got my first 6er of Sucks.
makes the value buy a lot better imo.
32 oz for 7.99 = approx 24.96 per oz
72 oz for 12.99 = approx 18.04 per oz
equivalent of spending approx $5.77 per 32 oz now.
im obsessed w value buying anything and everything now.

saucony stonefly IPA = really liking this beer for the summer time. its very drinkable. it makes you want to drink another and another. a portion of proceeds goes to preserving a stream up in PA where it is brewed. the owner is an ex-pro skateboarder and his head brew guy was from russian river.

its rated in the 80s but i think that is bc it is not a really complex beer with competing pine notes w floral and fruit notes and malt backbone and all the other cliches people use. its just a really good drinking beer. i think it was 8.99 or 9.99 a 6er as well.

it has all of my fav hops - the ones that start w C like centennial, citra, columbus, cascade ... i may have made cascade up.
------------------------------------------------------

magruders on conn ave has deschutes fresh squeezed ipa. really good beer. rated in the mid 90s i think. you cant find it in md, hopefullly that changes soon.

Re: Let's talk good beer

cheers chico!

edit - i came up with my own original pick up line.

(you are sitting in a swanky hotel bar you are staying at for business. you've had a couple too many to drink as you try to drink enough to fall asleep in a new bed. you decide to walk up to a tall woman in a short curve-hugging red slip on dress as she sits at the end of the bar smoking a virginia slim leaving cherry red lipstick on the butt of the stick)

"excuse me, it looks like you got something in your eye." - you

(you hand gesture to the inner crow of her eye)

(she starts trying to brush what ever it is away)

"did i get it?" - she asks

"no, its still there" - you

"what is it?" - she asks as she more vigorously wipes at her eye ball

(you lean in a little closer for a better look)

"It .. looks like ... love at first sight." - you

BOOM you just picked up a woman who is most likely a really expensive hooker and after she takes you up to her hotel room and you are done, she demands 2k to which you look astonished. Big Toni who was sitting in the bathroom busts open the door and beats the ever living shit out of you as she goes through your wallet. she only finds a couple 20s. she tosses your wallet to toni who grabs your Id. he ahd already pulled your webbing ring off your finger. Toni tells you that if you dont pay him 1k every month for the next 6 months he is going to show pictures to your wife. You pay toni every month for 6 months. but toni keeps coming. sometimes at your work. sometimes he waits for you in the parking garage of your office building. fucjing toni. when will he stop ...

The craft beer industry may be a hotbed of innovation, but one beer continues to reign supreme above them all in an annual poll among homebrewers.

For the seventh year in row, Russian River Brewing Co.'s Pliny The Elder has taken the top spot in Zymurgy magazine's vote of best commercial beers. Pliny the Elder is a Double IPA with alcohol by volume of 8 percent.

Zymurgy asked AHA members to vote for up to 20 of their favorite beers among any commercial beer available for sale in the Unites States. More than 19,000 votes were received for almost 6,000 different beers and from 1,763 breweries in the online poll.

bell's just started distribution in MD and i am going through their offerings not named 2 hearted ale (one of my fav). I used to drive to DC to get 2 hearted.

I tried bells lager by the lake this weekend. pretty good but not something i would routinely buy. im going to try the midwestern ale and another kinda golden ale offering (i forgot the name) next.

chico - ive been meaning to try lagunitas pilsner. that may be a good crisp clean summer beer.

bell's distribution is insanely quick. on md and Dc shelves are beers that are less than 2 weeks old. just insane.

-----

monument city is coming out with a new IPA. i tried a shot from a tester growler and it was pretty good. hard to tell from the little i had but its not as good as 51 rye. its more or less another decent mosaic IPA .. which there are way to many of on the shelves to begin with. i wish they went ahead w a pale ale they had planned instead.

wow, stone enjoy by and 90 min made the top 10? wow. they are good solid beers but top 10? thats the thing about beer or food or women .... to each his own. there is no right or wrong in the world of personal preference.

I had Monument City's Battle IPA at the Maryland Craft Brew Festival a few weeks back. I had the first pour off the cask that day, and could possibly be the first person outside the brewery to have it. From what I remember (memory is a bit hazy from that day. Sampled 20+ beers that afternoon), it was very very good. But also heard they are not bottling it...

Here are some of the different things I've had lately...I tend to post everything in Untappd, so if you don't have the app yet, get it and follow all of us who post here...there.

Have 2 bombers (one in fridge, one aging) of the Points Unknown IPA from Stone/Wicked Weed/Ecliptic. Good stuff. Be careful. It's an easy drinker and if you don't sip, you'll miss how complexly good it really is.

Heavy Seas' Blackbeard's Breakfast. Nice porter.

Union Double Duckpin. Quality DIPA. Love the fact that it drinks so nicely out of a can. Nice to see a lot of craft beers going the can route. Something about drinking out of a can in the summer time.

Mispillion River Reach Around IPA. Only distributed in DE. Drinks nicely out of the can. Reminded me of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Could be my go to drinker at the beach.

New Holland Mad Hatter. The pine smell alone makes this worth trying. I really liked this.

Maine distributes in MD but only on rare occassions can you find Lunch and you can never find Dinner. there are 3-4 types you can find on a MD shelf 365 but i havent tried any yet like a fuzzy nurple and some other red rose (are these sours?). the perfect pour got a shipment of Lunch in a few weeks ago, i called a few days after and it was already gone. the Lunch is really really good.

it sounds like i need to circle back around to sweetwater. i had it a few times a few years ago, i liked it but didnt love it. maybe i need to give it another go.

chico - try Great Divides english bitter beer. i forget the name they call it. real good beer that leaves the mouth feeling fresh and clean after, which is what i look for in a summer beer. clean, crisp and refreshing.

BD - i hope they bottle it, if it was the same IPA i had. i literally had a plastic shot of it so it is real hard to tell.

Bells has a tasting at Canton Wine and Liquor today (tasting just sounds weird re beer .. meh)

they said they do not have Hopslam and they are hoping that if they get in good w Bells they "might be allocated some". WTF, i hate this crap. like we have to beg and kiss a breweries ass to get a case or 2.

so it appears that Md will not be getting a steady supply of Hopslam.

I really hate when breweries low produce their signature beers. maybe its a hops/supply issue but i think its more trying to keep supply low to stay sought after.

i am thankful we get 2 hearted, lagunitas sucks, union jack, sculpin and a few others consistently.

Hopslam is a seasonal that comes out in January or February. It is normally gone from the shelves within a month and if you find some after a month its already past its prime. Hopslam is allocated by the amount of Bells that is sold per store. If they sell alot they get more hopslam. I would bet come the 2016 release you will see it pop up in MD.

I was a little disappointed...I thought mo finished with a sour taste and peeper was the better of the two. Beer store guy say the mean ole Tom the stout was by far and away the best they did and said I should try the lunch next as well.

Otm I didn't see the English bitter.

Were they fresh? They should be drunk within 90 days of bottling. The date is on the side of the bottle. There are a lot of outdated bottles out there.

6/2 for the mo...and late April for the peepers...they were sold as bombers. They didn't have six packs.

Chico mentions maine on friday.

I walk into my beer store friday night and they have bottles of maine lunch! at $9.99 a bottle it is kinda cost prohibitive but I bought 3. dob was 6-5-15. they also had a bottle of "another one" which i have never seen before and got a bottle of that. it was good.

i really really like Lunch. imo one of the best beers you can find in MD, if you can find it. seems like it is coming around more. i wonder if Maine is increasing dist in md.

chico - i usually get GD's english bitter when it comes in variety 12 packs (if the 12 also includes Lasso or Titan). in md, GD selection has really gone up. now i can get about 6 diff selections from GD off the shelf.

Lunch is brewed every 3 months. They were only sending it our way every 6 but it has been bumped into regular circulation. I don't for see Dinner anytime soon but who knows.
