Does Eric Winston give two shits about that? It's HIS perception(heavily influenced by his agent) about a teams' potential to win games that matters. He's seeing Jamaal Charles, Brandon Flowers, the dude who had a great season in New England, Bowe, etc, and a team that once won the division a couple years back. Firing a head coach, ultimately, is mostly a symbolic gesture. Judging the "winningess" of team requires more weight to be put on the current talent on the team, "reputation", and recent history, etc.
Their recent history is they haven't won a playoff game since 1993, and they just finished last in the worst division in football. *edit-sorry I quotted the wrong person |

It's really amazing to think that two years ago none of these guys were on the team. Now we have one of the best front 7s in football. |

Anybody know how the visit with Demetrius Bell went? He would be a great addition and he is only 27 yrs old.

He left without a contract. Supposedly he's using us to drive his price up with the bills |
Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker
Even though, it has yet to translate on the field. The combination of Bruce Allen, Mike Shanahan, and even Dan Snyder has made major improvements in the redskins personnel.
RGIII will bring with him what it's going to take for the redskins to get over the hump for the redskins players talent to consistently start showing on the field. |

No I mean we have a shot if things don't work out with the bills, but it doesn't seem likely we get Bell. Id give us a 35% chance we get Bell. |

If we had to pick the best guy out of that group, who would we take? Cofield? Jenkins? Jenkins has yet to play a snap, but might very well be our best DL-man. |

Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker
^ So you say they were below average last year?
Bowen and Carriker without question. In Cofield's case, the group of "nose tackles" is so small and exclusive that it's hard to say he was below average. I thought he performed adequately.
Cofield was below average as far as as all defensive tackles go, but that might have just been an effect of the scheme, i.e. he's doing the job of two men in a 4-3 scheme. Same with Carriker and Bowen I suppose, although Bowen wore down considerably after a hot start. He wasn't good at all when we had that long losing streak. I wouldn't pick any of the five as not NFL caliber. I think it's just mostly a group of available guys, and Jenkins, the prospect who hasn't played a snap yet. |

NT's? I mean we have some solid NT's now as it is. Theres some good ones in the draft, but thats not a bigger need than secondary, OL, ILB, WR, 3rd string RB, etc. |
we need some real fat on the nose. how many legit tubs are in the draft this year?
At least 3 high rounders who we would be lucky to have a shot at in the third round. After the third round, you're either taking a big guy and hoping to teach him to be good, or you're taking a smaller guy with the skill set (like Neild) and asking him to put on weight for the role.
The three are Poe, Memphis Ta'amu, Washington Chapman, Alabama |

What happend to Aaron ross? Haven't heard where he is or what he's doing.
Side note: I'm glad we traded for RG3 more and more because Matt Flynn signed with Seattle not miami like expected. Would have cost more had Miami of know this and manning. |

Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker
Bowen and Carriker did combine for 11.5 sacks.
Orakpo and Kerrigan's sack numbers look a lot more reasonable if you consider that they were the ones who earned those additional sacks. But like I said in another thread, someone has to be there to clean up, or the QB gets the pass off.

Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker
kerrigan's strategy is solid. get under the pads, drive them back into their own qb, and get a hand on the ball when possible

I'd like to see us use more traditional 4 man fronts, especially with hybrid defenses being all the rage in the league now a days. Just every now and then it would be nice to see both Kerrigan and Orakpo lining up as traditional defensive ends with their hands in the dirt and two DT's inside (presumably Carriker and Cofield). I know we run 4 man fronts some times but thats usually with Orakpo and Kerrigan in a two point stance. |

*edit-sorry I quotted the wrong person
Does being obtuse win you an award? They still finished with a better record (7-9) than us, and the players who led their team to a division title a couple years back is still mostly intact. And being in a weak division cuts both ways. It means it's easier to make the playoffs for everyone involved. |

Our sub package is a 40 front (as you mentioned) and typically involves both OLBs with their hands in the dird. I would like to see them get more multiple with that sub package. What they do a lot of is they will overload one side with an SS pressure to force the offense to adjust their protection/go hot with the football. But the fact that we pretty much have to wait for a passing down to use that wrinkle suggests that we're missing opportunities to get our best personnel on the field in earlier downs. Ever since the first six games Haslett was coordinator, we haven't seen much interior pass rush. Sure, Fletcher or McIntosh will come with delayed A-gap pressure a lot, but we live and die with straight four man rushes and defensive overloads. I feel like if we were more multiple, we could acquire more useful personnel that creates favorable match-ups for our rushers. That's the opportunity we are missing on defense right now. In our sub packages, we should be attacking the weak links of the opponent's pass protection. Instead, we're trying to isolate the tackles on the edge, and/or get a free rusher. Nothing wrong with that, just missing opportunities to be even better. |
Re: 2012 Redskins Free Agency Tracker
What's the knock on our O-line anyway? They got pushed around some but we aren't all that bad. The two young guys Hurt and Smith played really well. I was thinking, why go out and pay millions for guys in free agency when we can just insert Smith at RT? (even though Jamaal Brown isn't all that bad) and maybe Hurt at LG or RG? Then we can add a couple of cheap veterans through FA and add more depth through the draft. Just my opinion.

Already mentioned in the NFL FA thread but since it's Redskin related, Donte Stallworth has signed with the Pats.
Also, Laron Landry is joining the Jets |

I recently read an interesting perspective in regards to our O-Line but right now I'm having trouble placing it. Anyhow, basically it goes that in 2011 we gave up 5 less sacks then we did in 2010. Now 5 sacks might not seem like that great a drop but when you consider that we lost Kory L for the season, Trent Williams for 6 games, Tim Hightower for the season (aka our top pass protection back), and Jammal Brown for 4 games well safe to say a 5 sack drop looks all the more impressive. The fact of the matter is we might not necessarily need starters but rather we need to focus on finding better backups or at least focus more on improving the ones we have. *Shamless plug for Florida State tackle Andrew Datko |

I think we do an adequate job of pressure but our coverage schemes on the back end when we send pressure seem very suspect. Too many times when we send 5, 6 or 7 the other team ends up having receivers running free with no DB in sight to come up and make a quick tackle or in position to make a play on the ball. |

If healthy our full OL is probably in the middle of the pack across the NFL. The big question is Jamaal Brown, what will he have left in 2012 to bring to RT. While he still has a long ways to go to be considered an unquestioned starter, I saw enough of Willie Smith to give him starter reps in the OTA's and training camp at RT. The interior is ok, not great but not horrible either. Having RGIII will make them look better, Grossman was a sitting duck back there. |
