I'm trying hard to move on. Really. But when you hood up simple passing yards as if that's a useful measure of QB performance i gotta call BS.
I don't think you are. Your call of BS is duly noted. Seattle was dead last (ranked 32nd) in passing attempts in 2012: 2012 NFL Team Passing Stats - National Football League - ESPN Seattle was 1st in rushing attempts in 2012: 2012 NFL Team Rushing Stats - National Football League - ESPN 2013: Seattle ranked 2nd in rushing attempts and 31st in passing attempts. Wilson has been carried by Lynch and the D his whole career. He has been good the few times they let him throw the ball. 2015 Lynch hasn't been able to carry the load and Wilson is struggling at 5-5 because the D is still tip top. 2nd and 5 is a lot different than 2nd and 9. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
a QB can be 29th in the league in passing yards per game and play well. That's all he had to do to win. Good for him. All QBs should be that lucky.
Even the statement you're making above is confusing and contradicts some of your own statements during this discussion.
I'm surprised that you are actually holding up passing yards/passing attempts as somehow a meaningful measure of QB play. Here I thought the object was to win games not post pretty passing yards. YPA, QBR, passer rating, PFF QB rankings, FBO, team offensive DVOA impact, 4th qtr comebacks, game winning drives, with a plus given for rushing yards and 1st downs and then there is the unquantifiable "play making" which I now wonder you would even acknowledge that Wilson possesses. I've posted many of these stats already, I would take the time to post them all but they would likely be ignored like Seattle jump in offensive DVOA from ~20th to 1st. 1st. Lol, passing yards per game. Flacco and McKown must be top 10 QBs in your book.
It's quotes like this that make me wonder if you're sincere, or just saying crazy stuff to get a reaction. If they would have propped up RGIII like they are Kirk. . . Infinity and beyond!
That's funny because I've been thinking the same thing about your whole argument. Wow, I didn't realize how hung up you are on my disagreement with Jay's handling of Griffin. But yeah I sincerely believe Jay's focus on the passing game comes at the expense of the run game. And yes I think the way Jay/McVay call the passing game protects Kirk. i'll try to leave it with this...
DYoungJelly:...But, if a killer defense and a brutal running game can prop up Kapernick and Wilson, maybe, just maybe it could turn a QB who is setting passing records into a consistent winner.

If Kirk can become as "propped up" as Wilson was during their SB runs I'll gladly take that kind of propped up prodction from Kirk.
|
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Not remotely close to what I said.
I didn't ignore anything. In post #715, I said that I thought DVOA was a great measurement. I also said, Wilson was the 8th ranked QB playing in front of the #2 RB to make the most efficient offense. Considering the fact that they ran the most and passed the least of any team, I believe Lynch is more a factor than Wilson. In the same post, I credited Wilson for being the difference in 2011 and 2012 that took them to the most efficient offense. He was replacing Tavaris Jackson and Charlie Whitehurst who probably shouldn't have been starting in the NFL. I believe passing attempts compared to running attempts and passing yardage is a reflection of where a teams' production comes from not how to rate a QB. Wilson didn't have to shoulder the load to win games as I've said in multiple posts on this stupid thread because he had a great running back to carry him. I also said he was good when he did actually throw the ball in multiple posts. But cheers. |

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Skins have way to many issues to blame Anything on the QB! Captain Kirk is a bright spot on a rather gloomy Roster. yes we have a few play makers in Reed,DJax, but the rest are interchangeable players. we have Trent Williams He is the best player on the team end of story. The running game is horrible yet Kirk has played well. The carolina panthers are the best team in the NFC and maybe the entire league it has taken them a while to get good..they kept adding the missing pieces till they had the team the head coach wanted. We need to do the same..Cousins play gives us a chance at getting better as a whole..We don't need to draft another QB. There is not a college QB that could come close to Kirk right now. Lets get a TOP pass rusher..another top Oline..some DB help ..and maybe a new D coordinator. even if we don't make the playoffs this year the Skins appear to be making progress.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
I won't go so far as to say KC is a "bright spot" on the roster, but I will give you that there are bigger problems than QB right now. Further, unless there is some better option I am not seeing, I expect he is the best option at QB for next year's roster.
With that said, KI Skins' info says to me that he is a very average QB. Jury is still out for this year, but, every time he has the opportunity to pull away from the pack (like last week or the 1st game against the Giants), he goes flat. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
If you do not have KC for next year....who do you have?
The better the roster gets around him, the shinier KC will get. SM is well aware of this and if a better alternative presents itself, I am confident he will act on it. |

You're a fair-minded person but you still don't get it concerning Kirk Cousins' ability level. What you seem to want out of Kirk is something that only elite QB's can deliver. Kirk can't do what you want him to do because he is an average NFL QB. I thought the QBR analysis I did would show you that Kirk is no less consistent than any other average QB, yet they are all inconsistent. The bottom line is that you are currently getting out of Kirk as much as you have a right to expect of him. The primary way Kirk can get significantly better is for the rest of the team to get better around him. We haven't won more games because our team wasn't good enough to win more games. The only reason we could possibly be in first place after today's game is that the rest of the division is playing down to our level. |

Well, I do think that Kirk can and will continue to improve his mental and physical skills as an NFL QB; however, I don't think he'll ever be an elite QB. OTOH, I think he may be able to get to a level equivalent to Eli Manning and Jay Cutler; e.g., the best of the rest. Is that good enough on a strong team? I'd say "yes", as proven by Eli's Super Bowl rings. |

Is what we see this year what we saw last? Not imo. So I will respectfully disagree that he has reach his ceiling, which is what I believe you are saying. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
IF Kirk is not a bright spot on roster how the heck did he win NFC player of week not once but twice..what other redskin player has done that?? What is a ELITE QB anyway? does that mean you can put that guy on any team and he takes them all the way? does the team around the QB make him elite or not..does the coach or system have anything to do with that ELITE status? please tell us!! Are you saying that Brady could come in here with this staff and system and win us 10 games every year? How do you explain all the other so called elite QB's that have fallen on hard times lately..ROGERS,WILSON,LUCK..OH they are not elite anymore because they are not winning..Let me get this straight and help me out.IF your TEAM wins you are considered an ELITE QB if your TEAM struggles you are not..the common theme is the word TEAM..someday some of you will understand this concept .
|
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
rocnrik, great. Won NFC player of the week twice. Yay. However, bottom line, to date, he has roughly as many INT's and fumbles as TD passes. Just off the top of my head, an elite QB has about a 3:1 / TD:TO ratio. A good QB a 2:1 ratio. An average QB has about a 1:1 ratio.
I am not going to repeat past arguments about KC and his ceiling. Nothing this year has changed my perception of him as being consistently inconsistent. I believe he has reached his ceiling. He can win with a good team around him and when he hits on most cylinders. If he puts a string of six games in a row with a 2:1 or better TD/TO ratio, I will be convinced he has taken a step. I fully expect, however, that he will continue his ~ 1:1 ratio. Kirk's TD/TO ratio were: 2012 - 4/4 (3 games; 3 INT's) 2013 - 4/10 (5 games; 7 INT's) 2014 - 10/11 (6 games; 9 INT's) 2015 - 15/13 (11 games; 10 INT's) Teams can win with numbers like these, but not consistently. To me, and to be a better than average QB, over the long run you have to score twice as much as you turn the ball over. Again, I still believe he is the best option at this point and likely next year. |

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
How is that elite QB working out for Giants? and he has the best WR in the game or at least the best hands! even Eli can't make up for that mess they have..Look at Brees in N.O. he should get out of there. Granted Cousins threw that one bad out pass and got lucky but he still played very good ..I was more upset at play calling in the second half. Gruden does not want to put the game in Kirks hands..that is obvious! but we won and if the team continues to play with that type of spirit I don't see why we can't win the East.

I agree. The trend statistically is showing improvement over time. However one the biggest measure that is lost on a stat sheet is how the team has recently started to rallying around each other and KC. After reading about the timing of the players-only meeting that Dashon Goldson called Saturday night and how a few other team leaders stepped up to talk about the effort they need to give on Sundays, and the things they can still accomplish this year. Gone (at least for now) are the days of a divided locker room and players throwing each other under the bus, like was happening when RGIII was QB. The attitude in the locker room has greatly improved and you can not see that on a stat sheet. A player/team has to want to give it his all for his team and teammates on the field on Sundays. That shit is contagious and can build and grow. In the past during Snyder era, when our team has sucked it was 1) level of play/lack of talent and 2) shitty effort. You have to have both talent and effort. |
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
KC threw that ball 60 yards in the air and Djax still had to slow down and wait on it a little....Dude is F..n... Fast
|
Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?
Seven of Kirk's 10 TD's that came in his last five games came against NO (4) and TBay (3). Both excellent games on his part. Both at home. Each followed by a clunker (in part caused by the competition - NE & Carolina). His play yesterday was solid but not spectacular - a level, however, for which I have no complaints.
In his five away games, he has thrown 5 TD's and 8 INT's. This, too, is a trend. With that said, in his first three away games, he threw 1 TD/2 INT's each; in the last two (Carolina, NE), he threw 1 TD/ 1 INT. If he truly improves and reverses the ratio from the first away games, that would be significant. Also, KC's inconsistencies track with the teams. While I realize this is a chicken/egg thing (is KC dragging down team or vice versa), if the Kool-Aid KC Worshippers wish for converts, KC needs to win when the team is down. Right now, he doesn't (which, BTW, is not a horrible trait or one that marks him as a "Bad" QB - however, to me, it does demonstrate a limited ceiling). Kirk will quell my doubts when: (1) We have a three game win streak. (2) KC wins an away game. We play Dallas at home followed by Chicago at Soldier Stadium. If we win those two, I am officially a KC supporter (although it will take some time for me to completely stop thinking that the other shoe will drop). Chicago will be a tough out, but it will be the kind of game in which a "good" QB must perform well. To me, that's the current "trend setting game" on my radar. They have the 49'er this week. Assuming they beat them, we will both be 6-6 for the game (We WILL beat the Cowboys - Period). Playoff implications will be on the line. Pressure will be high. To convince me Kirk has a higher ceiling than what he has historically shown, then "Good Kirk" (not even "Great Kirk") needs to show up in Chicago. As to the absence of drama and the end of divisiveness, I absolutely agree that Kirk has brought that. He appears to be very well liked by the team. All of that is good. However, Rex Grossman was loved by his teammates on the Bears (and here apparently). He was a Jekyll/Hyde QB with serious limitations. Right now KC looks a lot like Grossman to me. Can he prove he is not? Kaptain Kirk's Kool-Aid Drinkers say "YES!" The rest of say "Let's wait a bit first. After four years in the league, it's show me time." He has shown some, but, he has some serious hurdles to overcome for me to believe he is not "Just a guy." And, again, I end by saying ... He is our best option this year and likely next. Further, he is better than many starting QB's currently out there. |
