I'm pretty sure if we tag him (3 hours until deadline btw!!! arg) and want to sign him to a long term deal we have to do that before July 15th or wait until the end of the season. Can't do it mid-season.
I still have hope that the non exclusive tag could be one more tool to determine his market value and be sure not to look like fools overpaying him.
actually the deadline in 4 pm EST tomorrow |

Bruce Allen is the old man you see at restaurants complaining about food prices and how he used to be able to buy a burger for a quarter.
This whole thing reminds me of Brad Johnsons last year here. Brad was a good QB but wasn't the big name Superstar type player (RG3, Jeff George) that Dan wants. They let Brad leave for Tampa and end up spending 15 years (Yes it's been that long!) chasing a franchise QB. Now they got a QB on the same level if not better than Brad Johnson but they are willing to let him go because he isn't the guy who is going to run around and make plays like Brett Favre(IMO). This is ridiculous. I'm shocked Jay Cutler isn't on the roster yet. I got the Redskins sticking it to me in one hole and the Republicans AND Democrats tag teaming me in the other. |

For the right price, Kirk will sign in DC. But if he's going to be traded the only place he'll sign a long-term deal is SF. Chicago being a very distant second. The optimistic side of me is hoping the Redskins FO is diligently working behind the scenes to get deals done that will benefit not just KC, PG, and DJ, but the team as a whole AND the fan base thus putting all the rampant speculation to rest. IDK blind faith?

so if we have now committed to 44Million over 2years, shouldn't that be enough to let him know he is "wanted" here? His twitter post, "Tag! I'm it" seems pretty snarky at this point, almost as bad as some of RG3's :( |
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
This is obviously a bad marriage. It is time for a trade, reportedly they will not trade KC. However, that is likely posturing. The Redskins cannot act as if they are desperate to trade.

How is it a bad marriage??? Both sides may not be buddy buddy but KC is now getting well over 40 million over two years for good play. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
The exclusive tag, in my mind, changes everything we've speculated on. No other teams can negotiate with Kirk Cousins now. That's not to say there's no longer a chance that a trade deal might take place, but in my opinion, if the Redskins were open to a trade deal, they would have tagged him non-exclusive.

I don't think they're open for a trade UNLESS someone gives them the farm. All this media talk is just that. |

for a guy who is going to be paid 44Million from a team, he could - imo - be more enthusiastic. Sorry, any past snubs should be just that past.

They have had over a year to workout a long term contract and could not. KC has been paid very well, however obviously does not feel he has received a fair long term offer. Or, maybe KC wants to leave. |

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
Goodness gracious, we're analyzing Instagram pictures. Just stahp it.
Let's get some cooler heads up in here. The fact that the Redskins tagged Cousins doesn't change a whole lot. The one thing they did do was choose the non-exclusive tag, so he can't go negotiate terms. You could look at that a couple ways: 1) They don't view two first round picks as adequate compensation for him, and thus if he signed with the 49ers and they declined to match, they wouldn't be happy with the compensation. The non-exclusive tag means they control the discussions around trade compensation. In doing so they strengthen their negotiating position. Play it out:
- SF contacts Washington about trading for Cousins. They'll give their #2 overall pick for Cousins and the 17th. Bruce and Scott say F you no way, go pound sand. - Cleveland contacts Washington about trading for Cousins. They'll give two 1st rounders and a 3rd rounder. Bruce and Scott say now you're talking. OK, Kirk we give you permission to talk to the Browns about a contract, but not SF. SF isn't willing to offer adequate compensation, so F them. Cousins then decides do I want to play in Cleveland, or do I play under the tag one more time and try to get to free agency? There's still a risk the 'Skins lose him for nothing in 2018. But think about it from SF's standpoint - they can't even talk with him right now. So if they want him, they're going to come stronger with an offer. Or they'll say nah forget it, they'll do something else at QB, and then Cousins' leverage next year disappears. It's basically a game of chicken between the Skins and the Niners. Force the Niners to have to think about 2018 as the earliest they could get their hands on Cousins. If they do something at QB between now and then, like drafting Trubisky, then some leverage shifts back to Washington.
2) While they haven't budged in their financial commitment to him yet, maybe they are planning on coming up between now and July 15, and they don't want John Lynch or anybody else to get in his ear. Maybe the Skins have a better read on this negotiation than we give them credit for. Maybe Cousins really does want to be a Redskin, and all he wants is for the team to get realistic with its offers. Several reports have said that Cousins's preferred destination if dealt, would be the 49ers. Jason Reid also recently had his report that Cousins doesn't want to sign long term. It is certainly possible. But it's also possible those reports are leaking from the Cousins camp in an effort to gain leverage over Washington to extract the contract he wants from the team he wants to play with. He made the Pro Bowl as a 'Skin, and he likes familiarity and routine. There's a lot of reason to believe he wants to be a Washington Redskin, despite recent reports. So when I step back from it, I see the Redskins trying to put the Niners in a position where they feel like they need to shit or get off the pot at QB. So they will either come with a strong trade offer, or they'll acquire a QB not named Kirk Cousins, and hopefully that will happen before July 15. Then when July 15 comes, THAT's when the Redskins come with their best offer, when hopefully the Niners will be committed to a different QB, and the Skins won't feel like they need to make him the highest QB in the league. When I war-game it, I just see a big game of three-way chicken right now, a game between the Cousins and Redskins and a game between the Niners and Redskins. Wait till July 15 and see who swerves first. |

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
Good post Schneed, but what happens if Kyle S. calls the Skins' bluff and decides he will go with a stop gap solution at qb to guide the 49ers into next year where they will make a massive offer to Kirk in FA? I can see several reasons why that wouldn't happen, including A. you're wasting your first season as HC, and B. Kirk will almost be 30 at that point and you're not sure if you want to invest big money in a semi-aging qb. But I can also see why they would do that, because Kyle S. knows what he's getting with Kirk.
|
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
For sure. But by July 15 you will know the Niners plans. If they call the bluff and go stop gap, you still have till July 15 to come hard with an offer. There's no need to budge now. By July 15 we will know if they're dumb as foxes.

Cousins wears #12. 1 + 2. 1 thing in his life that has always guided him are his principles. Principals, a guiding figure in anyone's life, like a Mike Shanahan when Kirk was drafted. Mike Shanahan, the father/principal in Kyle Shanahan's life. 2 reasons why Kirk is gone: Principles, and Kyle Shanahan. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
Actually Schneed, you have it backwards. Cousins was tagged the exclusive. Meaning, the Redskins hold exclusive rights to Kirk Cousins. The non-exclusive would have allowed Cousins to negotiate with other teams.

He was trolling the Skins by making a statement on how much it would take to sign him long term He also threw 4917 yards, subtract 17 from 49 and what do you get? 32, which is about what the tag will cost next year. Another troll statement But wait, theres more. Add 25 and 32 and you come up with 57 which is, drum roll, Nick Sundbergs number. Which can only mean one thing: KIRK COUSINS HATES NICK SUNDBERG. Get this clown out of here, not only is he taking passive aggressive shots at the Skins, he clearly can't get along with one of the nicest guys on the team. I'm so over him |

Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
I have to think Kirk still wants to sign a long term deal with us. $55 million guaranteed (for instance) over 5 years (plus more in not guaranteed contract) is better than $24m this year and $30 million next year because next year is not guaranteed. Have a bad year or get hurt and you can kiss that money goodbye. Kirk set himself up by making them tag him again, but my guess is something gets worked out as long as the team can come up with a decent offer.

I completely agree and this is how I see it going. I think the team is either a) playing this as poorly as possible (Snyder is meddling and doesn't want him) or b) playing this as absolutely perfectly as possible by not budging an inch until July 15 when they will have waited out Kirk's leverage and then come up with a reasonable deal as you suggest. I still think it's B. |

Of course, the only thing they'll be talking about is how the Redskins could have signed Cousins to a cheaper deal had they offered him what he wanted last year. Will probably also go on to say how we could have kept Garcon and D-Jax (assuming at least one of them leaves.) Even though had the 'skins done that, then the media would have blasted them for offering a contract to a largely unproven quarterback ala' Brock Osweiler. Honestly, it's not my money so I won't really care if Cousins makes over 100 million dollars so as long as he continues to improve and show himself as a franchise QB and that the team can still draft well and sign free agents. |
Re: Kirk Cousins 365 thread
The team wants him back!!!! A deal will get done!!! A long term deal with enough guaranteed mullah to make Kirk happy. Can't tell me he really wants to be a 49er. Their line blows!!!!! Their ownership is even more retarded than ours!!!! HTTR!!!!!
