Re: Darrell Green and the Hall of Fame?

Love me some D. Green. What a career. I remember seeing him get burnt a fair share of times, but he learned to play w/in himself & only gamble when he was a step ahead.
No doubt he should be considered a 1st ballot guy. I agree w/most of the posts here. Somebody mentioned his speed. This is his legacy; maybe the fastest football player EVER!
I'm not exaggerating. From 85 -87 I think it was, the nfl had a "fastest man in the nfl competition" w/a 60 yd. sprint & DG smoked the competition each time. He ran about 6.01 - 6.05 each time. Who was the competition? Willie Gault & Ron Brown, both Olympic gold medalists on the 1984 4x100 team, and Renaldo Nehemiah, gold medalist in the 110m high hurdles.
What's so impressive about this is that Green had played football & taken so many hits over the years, while these guys were track guys (and they were bigger) who had taken time off from football.

Hard to see any way Green's not a first ballot choice, by the Monk fiasco has me suspicious over the entire HOF process. Too easy for a small but vocal minority take an unreasonable postion and build a coalition around it.
He does have some "trademark" plays:
Chasing down Dorsett.
Punt return hurdle for TD in the playoffs.
and let's not forget the play he made on the ball to knock it away against Chris Carter of the Vikings in the 85/86 Championship game.
Dallas Sucks.

If not first ballot then I will NEVER have faith in the system they use to pick who goes.

First ballot. No brainer. In his prime who was better than DG??

If Darrell Green isn't a first ballot Hall of Famer, then the voters should have their voting privledges revoked. Also, Monk should have been voted in a while ago, it's a shame that he's still having to wait to get in!

of all the guys in the last twenty years of the league, well the ones not in the hall yet,i would think that darrell green and jackie slater are about the only ones to be sure 1st round locks.

Matty:

I want to pick a nit with your post here. Darrell Green was not the first shut down corner (before Deion). There were shut-down cornerbacks before Darrell Green came into the league.

Dick "Night Train" Lane, Lem Barney, Herb Adderley and Willie Brown come immediately to mind.

Interestingly, I believe all four of those gentlemen are in the Hall of Fame.
