Re: Bottom and Back - Free bus rides to Richmond bars
Was this not voted one of the least interesting threads in 2010? Why are we bringing it back in 2011?

Re: Bottom and Back - Free bus rides to Richmond bars
Sure this MAY cut down on drunken driving, but the amount of public drunkenness is going to skyrocket.
I could see people consuming a LOT more if they know they can hop on a "drunk bus". I hope the bus doesn't have windows. It won't soon. :D |

mredskins - My threads arnt all the interesting, ive accepted that...... Honestly though, im just trying to make sure people are aware of this service so there will be less drunk drivers out there. Maybe inspire someone to do it in the DC area
Buster - from everything ive seen and from bartenders i know it definitly cuts down on drunk driving. |

Re: Bottom and Back - Free bus rides to Richmond bars
Anything that keeps people from driving drunk is a good idea. We had drunk buses in college and it worked great.

Re: Bottom and Back - Free bus rides to Richmond bars
If all the bus is doing is driving folks from bar to bar but not actually getting them home it is useless becasue eventually they will have to drive to get home. That is why I believe this to be a useless service and thread.

Re: Bottom and Back - Free bus rides to Richmond bars
Once the bus drops folks off for the night it's obviously up to them to find a safe way home, but if the bus helps prevent people from driving drunk going bar to bar, why is that a bad idea?
Cabs could make a killing just lining up at the final drop off point. |

I explained this to you back in July. Most people around age 21-26 who go to Fan or Downtown bars live in those areas. This just links those 2 areas, in my experience there is a lot of drinking in one area and ending up in another. Also its not like DC, if you want to live in a hip place in Richmond you pay about the same rent as you would if you lived in the suburbs. But odds are your place will have a lot of "character" and wont have a washer/dryer and youll have to deal w street parking.
mredskins - So most people who go to VCU, that are not commuters, live in the Fan. Most of the dorms on campus are also in the Fan. The most popular places to live as a under 30 year old is in the fan or downtown. You can pretty much walk to any downtown bar if you live downtown. But its too far to walk downtown from the fan or vice versa. The fan is a little more spread out so most people tend to drive to one end of the fan from the other. Also most bars in both the fan and the bottom are on either on Main or Cary or immediately off one of those streets. Main and Cary are predominantly one way streets that run parallel to each other. Plus MCV is downtown so there is a decent amount of those kids trying to make their way up to the fan and then back home.

So this bus is perfect for keeping people from driving when they want to go from downtown to the fan or vice versa, or want to go from one side of the fan to the other. Since most people who are out getting drunk in those areas also live in one of those areas it keeps them from driving. I would think 90% of the people who take the bus do not end up driving afterwards, just based on how Richmond is set up. Now fancy UR kids might drive to the fan get on the bus, go bar hoping, then get dropped off and then drive back home (the West End, not all the way back to New Jersey or Connecticut).
|
