Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen
Dallas fans seem to be high on him. He had been a backup but a productive one.
Interesting development, because Dallas was our competition for Cullen Jenkins. I do not think this ends our chances...we have money to spend, Dallas has been scrambling to get under the cap enough just to re-sign a couple of guys like Doug Free.
Agreed... And we overpaid for him 5yr 27.5 mil. And 12.5 million up front?
No they did not over pay. He is young and on the upswing in his career. Jenkins has been hurt on and off in his career and still wanted a pay day. |

Exactly I like this way more... you get a young guy with not much wear and tear cheap because he will be your starter for the next 5 years at 5 mill per year |

For what it's worth...

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen
He was stuck behind Igor Olshansky and Marcus Spears on the depth chart...two very good DEs.
He is probably one of the top 3-4 DEs available, along with Cullen. We might get both of them! |

More FWIW...
Cowboys DE Bowen one of 10 good bets to break out in 2010
DE Stephen Bowen, Cowboys: The smiling, baby-faced Bowen doesn't look the part of defensive menace, at least in the locker room. He can create havoc, though, and good things frequently happen for the Cowboys when he's on the field. Bowen is a dangerous third-down pass rusher who had three sacks and 33 pressures last season. His role could increase this year, as the Cowboys seem to be phasing out defensive end Marcus Spears
. |

contract numbers or sack/tackle numbers? stats mean nothing for 3/4 defensive linemen. Their stats are how many sacks the outside linebackers get. Their job is to have three fat linemen be able to push 5 offensive linemen so linebackers can get free. |

Save this comment because by halfway through this season trust me you will eat them |
Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen
Looks like a rare bad contract by Bruce Allen. I'm sure he had Bowen rated really, really close to Cullen Jenkins, and was willing to go to this level to lock up Jenkins, but our two worst FA contracts of the last two days are the defensive linemen. Lots of money locked up there.
We added two younger, talented guys, which is never a bad thing, but Bowen and Cofield are far from sure things. |
Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen
Even the Dallas fans are thinking this is a good move for the Skins. Most of them I've seen have said that Bowen outplayed Spears when he went down and most likely would have been the starter in Big D this year. I'd say it was a damn good signing.
Overpay? Probably not considering considering the 49ers signed their backup DE to a 5 year deal worth 20 mil with 7 guaranteed. That's because Bowen is a young player who is versatile and could just be reaching his prime.
Guy is younger than Cullen Jenkins and cheaper. This FO is ****ing awesome. |

lotta money for someone who hasnt done a whole lot

Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen
yeah, me neither - dude's started 11 games in 5 seasons and clearly hasn't made much of an impression. To give him as much money as they did is a little stupid in my book.
did you even look up which games he started? he was a backup until last year when he filled in due to injury and did a phenominal job. IMO this is the best FA signing we've done thus far. VERY happy about this one. Still, i am a bit interested to know who our starters along the Dline will be. i know its possible bowen, j jenkins, and cofield could all rotate in at NT, these three are all better suited to play DE... as is carriker. the way i see it, we've got several good DEs but not a single true NT. if we can fill this hole while we groom Nield, our pass rush is going to be INSANE this year. |
Re: Redskins sign DE Stephen Bowen
I'm happy that we plucked a quality D-lineman from two of our division rivals (Dallas and NJ) and we prevented the Eagles from getting the man they wanted for theirs in Haynesworth. If we cut him, they would have signed him.
