Re: CSN: "The 53: OL starters look set, battles for reserve spots"
No surprise if we have a same starters across the oline as last season, which doesn't bother me so long as Brown is healthy and much improved from what he's done with us so far. If Brown is still a liability there needs to be some real scrutiny of our FO/coaching staff wrt off-season personnel decisions.
I thought Hurt was learning and improving so it's a little surprising to hear he's not likely to return, but like others said it's still early. And who the hell is Tom Compton...seriously I don't remember him and watched every game last year. |

He is a very athletic tackle from South Dakota. We definitely could see him starting for us at RT down the line later in the season when, more than likely, jamaal brown gets hurt. |

Ahhh. Small school prospect w/ some potential. I like those types hopefully Compton is a keeper. |
Re: CSN: "The 53: OL starters look set, battles for reserve spots"
I hate that the starters are being declared before training camp, but I guess that's normal.
I think it's foolish to think our starting OL won't be at least as injury prone, a year older. We need Ribs, Compton, or others to step up and win starting positions, if we're going to protect RGIII adequately. |
Re: CSN: "The 53: OL starters look set, battles for reserve spots"
Compton's kind of a workout wonder, squats 700 lbs. Reminds me of P.Daniels & his weight lifting competitions. Also a college team captain a couple of years, so ?should be good for locker room. Would like to see him develop, starting at RT may be a stretch this year from a 6th round draft pick, but would be great if he developed that quickly.

Re: CSN: "The 53: OL starters look set, battles for reserve spots"
Most rookie OL struggle. (do the people bashing Hurt remember our beloved Trent Williams rookie year? and he was the #4 pick)
Playing on the OL is learned over time the few that are good right out the`gate are usually early picks. This late round draft pick comes in and plays in a pinch due to injury and the running game improves. I think its flat out wrong to speculate Hurt as being on the outside looking in terms of making the team. |
Re: CSN: "The 53: OL starters look set, battles for reserve spots"
It's just Tandler's opinion. And if Shanahan was so sold on Hurt, why go out and draft 2 interior OL? I think Hurt is going to have his work cut out for him in camp.

Re: CSN: "The 53: OL starters look set, battles for reserve spots"
Here's my speculation on what they'll do on the OL:
Trent Williams, Kory Lichtensteiger, Will Montgomery, Chris Chester, Jaamal Brown Maurice Hurt LG Josh LeRibeus RG Willie Smith OT Tyler Polumbus OT/OG, Tom Compton OT, Adam Gettis OG practice squad/inactive Here's what I would do: Trent Williams, Kory L, Chris Chester, LeRib/Hurt, Jamaal Brown Willie Smith, Maurice Hurt, Tyler P, Tom Compton Gettis-Practice Squad |
Re: CSN: "The 53: OL starters look set, battles for reserve spots"
I'll hold off on speculating until we get well into camp.

I'm in no position to know. But judging on actual performance and situation it isn't logical for a late round rookie that comes in and plays well in a pinch to be so far on the bubble to be considered out. Why go out and draft 2 interior OL? Simple answer, OL play is important and good teams continually address the position via the draft. But specifically to our team: we lost an interior lineman due to a major injury and scrambled between to find a suitable replacement (tried Will Mont at OG but this caused the OG and the Center position to struggle); and we also start an aging marginal RG (Chester) and a Center that can only play center; regardless of Hurt's play we needed interior OL |
With all due respect, I thought Hurt was absolutely atrocious last year. I would hope that Gettis and LeRibeus bring a higher ceiling anyways, so it's not that bad of a trade off.
Hurt is not too bad. He was just a rookie last year. But I am excited about LeRibeus and Gettis. A lot has been mentioned about Will Montgomery being a below average talent center, but he seems to be a little better than below average. |
Re: CSN: "The 53: OL starters look set, battles for reserve spots"
I gotta feeling could be a surprise starter on the OL by the end of preseason.

Re: CSN: "The 53: OL starters look set, battles for reserve spots"
So you would cut Monty?
Yeah, only because he lacks versatility which is very important for an OL in my eyes.
I see him as an average center but he can only play center. He's not passable at OG even for a short stint and most of our other interior OL can play center: Chester, Lichtensteiger, LeRib, Gettis |
