Not this year. But in a couple... it is possible. Even though I think free agency should still be used I am not a fan of building a Madden team.

Copy what Seattle did.
counting on getting a Richard Sherman, and a Byron Maxwell in the late rounds is a questionable strategy. It looks like Seattle traded down several times- they have had extra picks in the last 5 years, including 2 #1 picks in 2010

The Redskins cannot turn things around solely based on 2 drafts- and no free agents

Re: 2015 Free Agents

My top target would be RT.

I consider this a MUST upgrade position to run a functional offense.
Banking on our youth developing or the draft for merely league average production is a long shot. And the best chance for this offense to have success (or any offense for that matter) is to win at the point of attack.
Even though youth would be my preference RT carries such a high priority that I would still consider quality starters who are older. RT for me is not a position where I would take a wait see approach, its a 'no fail' mission to upgrade.

Targets:

Bryan Bulaga
Derek Newton
King Dunlap
Ryan Harrris (who was for a song last offseason)
Michael Roos

Next position would be FS

Again, merely league average production from the FS would be a benefit to the defense. But we don't have anyone of the roster and expecting a production from a rookie draft pick is asking a lot.

Targets-
Devin McCourty
Da'Norris Searcy
Tashaun Gipson
Will Hill (only makes the list because we're desparate, otherwise I wouldn't have the knucklehead on the list)
Chris Clemons

DL-
We need youth along the DL and instead of signing/re-signing some rather middling players Bowen/Jenkins. I would target:

Stephen Paea

FA/Draft offseason wants:
RT, FS, SS, NB, DL-Pass rusher, OG, TE

This is the year for the Skins to double down on the draft. We basically had two full staffs evaluating college players at all levels- the Skins glorious college scouting depth and McC's private firm. The draft isn't a sure thing but this year ought to be as close as the Skins can get. On the other hand our pro personnel department has been less than stellar, and McC certainly was not sitting around looking at potential FAs. Take this year to load up on draft picks, evaluate the pro personnel on their jobs and get the right crew in for the next year. Next year we should be more balanced in the approach, and hopefully less position needy. Plus we would have the added bonus of actually rolling cap over in the offseason assuming we leave the big name FA alone this year.

I don't think McC is planning on this taking two years. He's probably looking at closer to 4-5 years.

He better plan on a quick (2 or 3 year) turnaround, because McC will not have a job if it takes 4 or 5 years. If they spend wisely, and draft wisely, the Redskins can be good in 2 years.

who was the last personnel guy that Snyder only gave 2-3 years. Sometimes I don't get how perception outweighs reality.

Bruce Allen has been here 5 years and he has been involved with personnel in all of them.

The real question is if McC can make it 5 years. He didn't in previous stops.

???? Pretty sure Allen still is involved and has had more than 4 years with the team.

Shanahan was in charge of personnel moves

Allen has been demoted from making any more disastrous personnel moves

He still wasn't fired or outright released. He was not removed from salary cap issues as far as we know. How long did he give Shanahan? How long was VC involved, and Gibbs before that? Part of the reason fans misery has gone on so long is because after his first few years of quick firings, he has tended to let people stay one year to long.

But whatever, all this is moot if Scot McC starts effectively bringing talent in through the draft or FA.
who was the last personnel guy that Snyder only gave 2-3 years. Sometimes I don't get how perception outweighs reality.
Snyder gave full control to Schottenheimer. Took it back after one year. Gave full control to Cerratto in 2008. Gave it to Shanny after two years (justifiably, still 2-3 years). Gave Allen control after firing Shanny. Now giving it to McCloughan after one year.

All this is not counting Snyder being a habitual meddler. But Danny Boy has gone through head personnel guys nearly as fast as he has gone through head coaches.

Bruce was involved with personnel while Shanahan was here. Although it was announced that Shanahan did personnel alone (just as it was announced with McC), that proved to be untrue.

The team announcing that Allen is not involved with personnel and Allen actually not being involved with personnel have proved to be two different things.

edit: I apologize for the double post. I had a strange browser fart.

Re: 2015 Free Agents

Despite all the arguments against expensive FA signings at this time, I don't think FS can wait. We are just way too bad on the back end of the defense. It's absolutely not NFL quality. So, I'd like to see the Skins make a run at signing Devin McCourty.

Since I'm greedy, I'd like to see the Skins try to sign Brian Bulaga, as well.

Signing those two players would help to set up a "need-free" draft where trading down would be more palatable to me and probably more productive for the Skins.
