One thing to consider too: anyone we let walk because of performance, remember we DO need depth. Just because Compton isn't great, I'd still hang onto him (and many other role players) if the price is right.
Question: Isn't $77.3 (room after releasing players)
minus $51.0 (cap room used to resign)
$26.3?

Seems the cap room available is $10 Million more than you say.

And I'm REALLY nervous about arguing numbers with the Schneed....
Yes, lol, major brainfart. Without a spreadsheet I'm nothing.

Hey, this is a happy discovery. It's $26M available in free agency, not $16M. I'll fix the OP.

Also, if they do let Lauvao walk, wouldn't they need to resign Ty Nsekhe ?

I know he's a tackle but I read somewhere he could play guard. Another talented back up OL would be nice. Couldn't we keep him at a reasonable price?

I bet he gets low-end starter money on a place that needs a stop-gap, pretty decent LT.

You're absolutely right, we could end up keeping Nsekhe. But I do think he held up really well in the 4-game stint for Williams, and I think that was enough of an audition for a tackle-needy team to throw a few million at him on a short deal.

You're right, if we don't keep him, we'd need to find or draft a comparable replacement. Painter is also a free agent, makes me wonder what the staff thinks of him.

Also, if we're looking to replace Lauvao, here's a list of some that might be a lot better with a similar contract: 2017 NFL Free Agents Tracker | Spotrac

Note I didn't have DJax coming back in my post. Could use some of the $26M in space on retaining him.

But I think he wants to be an Eagle so I didn't put him in my numbers.

Would be interested to see some projections on that potential Kenny Britt contract. Damn, we would have some crazy size with him and Doctson.

If the Skins sign Kirk Cousins to a long-term contract, are there ways that they would be able to reduce the cap hit for him in the first one or two years of his deal? If so, do you have any idea of how much cap space might be cleared in 2017 by way of a long-term deal for Kirk?

sure, the normal thing is a big signing bonus that is prorated for the length of the contract. (Against the cap) Then a low first year salary.

Thanks. It seems that we could save a significant amount of cap space, especially in the first year.

I'm not a big Kenny Britt fan, I feel he's another bad season away from going back to journeyman status. Last year was really the first year he's put up decent numbers for a team. If it was for a team friendly contract I wouldn't mind bringing him in but it looks like he wants to get paid.

Yes it would definitely bring the cap hit down in year one. If you look at how most franchise QBs have their contracts structured, it is reasonable to think Cousins's 2017 cap hit could be only $16M instead of the $24M it would be under the tag. It could free up $8M that way.

Like all fans I'm very curious to see what their position will be. Will they commit or take another show me posture.

Know what, if you look at the way they structured Norman's contract, which has a cap hit of $20M in 2017 and then gets lower going forward, I almost think they did that on purpose. It's like they said lets take a big hit on Norman in 2017 when Cousins will be lower, then over time the Cousins cap hit gets bigger while Norman's gets smaller. It almost feels like they did that on purpose so those two big deals would fit together like puzzle pieces.

I could be reading too much.

There are some big names on that list.
Not sure how good they are though.
