Re: Rock or Nemo?

rock was 240 before gibbs told him to lose weight since he doesn't use FBs.

I really rather keep both if rock keeps playing like that.

Gibbs never told him to lose weight. That was a decision Cartwright made all by himself.

Nemo

Re: Rock or Nemo?

My loyalty button would say keep Rock. however, in needing a bruising back, Nemo fits the mold. Rock is a proven Special Teamer, while Nemo is a rookie still getting his feet wet. Nemo is cheaper, but not enough of a difference to using money as a deciding factor.

I too vote rid of safety, keep both Rock and Nemo for Special Teams, let Rock be the 3rd down back, Nemo short yardage back, and be done with it.

If i was picking today, I'd take Rock...

Re: Rock or Nemo?

Nemo looked great vs Carolina, and we say not to judge someone by one game. HOWEVER, to be a short yardage back, Rock is just too small. Period. If he was a full time type back and good enough to compete there, I'd give him more of a chance, but as a short yardage back, I dont think he's quite there.

I'm not ready to vote yet. I want to see if Nemo can continue to catch the ball and make sure he doesn't have fumble problems. He looks good running the ball. I'd give him the edge if it was my decision.

Re: Rock or Nemo?

We drafted Nemo for the short yardage 3rd down play. Or when we are trying to punch it in the endzone. I could care less who of our 3rd stringers catches the ball, when one of them weighs 30 more lbs than the other, and knows how to use it.

The touchdown, and the long run were not what impressed me with nemo against the panthers. One of the plays he got stuffed after like 3 yards. After someone wrapped him up, he kept pushing. Then more defenders began to throw their weight on. The last piece of him that I saw on that play before the whistle, was his stocky calves holding up the pile, and leaning forward. This guy must squat a ton. I love him.

that being said, he needs to face starters to really evaluate him

Re: Rock or Nemo?
Was anybody else surprised to see Rock was 11/14 on 3rd and 1's in 2003? That's pretty damn good.

Still, I like what Nemo brings to the table in terms of sheer size. I can see him filling the Gerald Riggs type role for us... punching through the line on short yardage and goal line situations.

Rock certainly won't make this decision easy though. He's solid on special teams and was pretty impressive catching the ball on Sat. night.

I'm hoping we can find a way to keep them both, but if I had to choose one I'd keep Nemo and reluctantly part ways with Rock.
Riggs is a pretty good assesmnent of him he just run's to where he's supposed to, he doesn't hit the hole as hard as Rigg's but that may come with familiarity of the offense, the one thing he does do is run where the hole is supposed to be, he goes north and south, I saw him miss a cut in the hole the other night when there was a wide open left side he went the wrong way, but that's not what he's there for.

As for Rock? He was very impressive out of the backfield last scrimmage, but we have plenty of guy's who can catch out of the backfield, we need short yardage runners, and Rock is just a tad undersized to be moving piles, where as I saw Nemo start pushing players backwards after contact, I think Gibbs will do what he can to keep both, but if push comes to shove it will be Nemo.

Re: Rock or Nemo?

Poor Rock Cartwright, he cuts his weight down from 240 to 215 because "Gibbs doesn't use fullbacks", and then they go out and draft a 255 pound running back for short yardage situations to move the pile.

That right there shows you that the cards are probably stacked against Rock. But there's plenty of time for him to shine on special teams -- that will be the key for him.

I'm not voting yet though, I need to see more games.

You know Beems I didn't realize he lost that kind of weight, when he was running after the catches he made the other night I was looking to see who it was, I couldn't believe it was Rock, he really did look good, I wonder if he can fill a different role, although Portis and Betts can catch perhaps he may be better out of the backfield, maybe a good 3rd down back, he's not exactly a burner like you may expect out of a 3rd down guy, but perhaps he will be the kind of player who just keeps moving the chains on 3rd down? I am sure he will have plenty of chances in the upcoming games to show that.

Re: Rock or Nemo?

While i do like nemo for his size i did see him struggle during pass protection. He was trying to block with only his arms and looked ridiculous.besides how can you not vote to keep a guy on your roster named ROCK.also how about the stat 11of 14 on third and one that is indeed pretty damn good.looks to me like rock is more versitile and that is why i say dont drop the rock!!!

p.s
I know having a cool name is no reason to keep a guy but damn rock cartwright is a bad ass name for a football player.

Re: Rock or Nemo?

I've really liked Rock and the way he's stepped into multiple positions when needed, but from what I've seen and heard about Nemo, I think Gibbs could have found nicer diamond in the rough.

Re: Rock or Nemo?

What I'd like to see is Rock put back on about 10-15 lbs and then let us make a decision. Rock was almost automatic on 3rd downs and he is not the same player now. I want the old Rock back. I think that is what most of us see in Nemo now.

If this is a real competition, bring these guys in the game against first teamers on third and short and prove what they got. Then we (meaning Gibbs) can make a real informed decision.

I don't think so, the coaches told him they don't use FBs at all etc and when he showed up lighter they sasid it was a great sign of how dedicated he was, so its obvious they wanted him slimmer whether they said it beforehand or not.
