man I think we are all aging ourselves by the players we've met. Ive had to loko up a bunch of those names...

I got to talk to Ramsey for like a mintue at Training camp at the end of the autograph session thing. I was the last guy in his line and he sat there and signed somthing for my girlfriend ( Since I already got his autograph ) and talked to me as other guys got up and left. He was the freakin man, and I've heard the same from everyone else who has talked to him.
I haven't really "met" any of the players, but I saw Fred Smoot (my idol) up close, but chickened out when it came to asking him to sign my tit. Instead I let a little kid that was stuck behind me get up front.
Just admit it, you chickened out. We had front line spots, too! You say you gave your spot to the kid, but you just wussed out. Rule #1: Never move for some little kid! (their dad is just using them as autograph bait)

Wrong quote, eh Cpayne! 8)

Yeah, that's why we have to go back this year! If I have the backing of the warpath, maybe, just maybe, FRED SMOOT WILL AUTOGRAPH MY TIT!

Well over the past few years I had to deal with several of the players because of my past job so here's my take on a few of the different players I dealt with:

Stubblefield-A bum on the d-line but a magician with a grill, great guy
Charles Mann-polite almost to a fault
B. Mitch-a loudmouth, arrogant yet totally loyal if he's on your side
Wuerffel-As nice and humble as you could imagine
Samuels-quiet, always on his cell phone
Kevin Lockett-wannabe renaissance man, will talk about anything but football
Westbrook-A total mystery, an ass when the camera is on, but so easy to talk to when there's no camera on even if you ask the same questions

And my three least favorites:

Lesli Shepherd and Albert Connell-Total waste of sperm, have no redeeming values whatsoever (hope there aren't any Connell or Shepherd relatives here)

Darell Green. This one is painful because he's one of my all time favorite players but let me give you a couple of examples of dealing with Darrell. Wanted to do a report about Mitchell's charity work (particularly Thanskgiving day). Got a call from Redskins Park. "Mr. Green would like to inform you that your tv station has two choices if it wishes to continue having him as a guest, drop the story on Brian Mitchell's charity work or do a story on Green's youth life foundation as well." I'm all for Green's charity but the fact that he would shove it down our throats all the time got a bit annoying. Here's another incident. Darrell Green is in studio as a guest for a sports special we're doing. So he's sitting there waiting for the show to start and one of our crew members asks him if he wouldn't mind, when he gets a chance, signing this football for his 6-year old grandson. Green's response "No, what's in it for me?" Still love seeing highlights of Green the player, but I'm no fan of Green the person
I like Suppier too.
I still think Dan Snyder ruined what could have been a good NFL Coach. We'll never know now I guess.

Just curious, how did Snyder ruin Spurrier? Seems to me that Spurrier did a pretty good job at ruining himself.

Sammy Baugh Fan 04-15-2004 11:14 PM

My opinion:
Snyder made a Spurrier a coach with one hand tied behind his back as Dan and Vinny made all the deals and picked players.

Did Spurrier have the same control over the whole team that was given to Gibbs? I think not and one would have a hard time saying he did.

The only thing I remember Spurrier asking for and not getting was Danny Aweful last year. Spurrier was terrible.

Daseal 04-15-2004 11:23 PM

Spurrier had a lot of control over who came in. I know Snyder got players a coach didn't want once, and I'm pretty damn sure he learned his lesson. Ramsey, Coles, Trung, Morton, all coveted by Spurrier, and Vinny and Snyder got the deals done. Hrm, come to think of it. Hire Spurrier as our GM. 3 outta 4 ain't bad. (I'm purposefully leaving out most of the other talent flops)

I love Spurrier, but it was his staff and his lack of discipline that got him in trouble, but I think he can still be an excellent coach, unfortunatly it might not be in DC =(

Hey Matty, I'll join ya for the Giants training camp...I've wanted to go since they've been here in Albany...

Sammy Baugh Fan 04-15-2004 11:27 PM

I never claimed to know 100% of a story but post my honest "opinions".

I wonder if I should go to the Dolphins camp... scout them out for our big preseason game matchup. Anyone have an old D.Thompson jersey, mabye I could get it signed...what nubmer was he anyways.

B. Mitch!

B. Mitch! That's the list! But my uncle up in Alexandria has a pic with Sonny on his wall, since he used to referee local FB games.

sonny-j-no9 04-16-2004 11:15 AM

Met Joe T when I was a kid. Stood in line with about a thousand other schmucks to get his autograph. I asked him some inane question -- cant remember what -- and he was very nice and talked to me for a bit even though there were others in line. My folks had the privaledge of meeting Harold McClinton a few days before he died. My dad told me he was a very nice and engaging guy.

All this Darrell Green stuff is pretty tough to swallow -- not that I dont believe it. The dude seems like the salt of the earth in his public persona.
