I posted this in the Salary Cap thread, but it's relevant here too: Here's the story on Lavar:

He's going to count $12 million against the cap if he stays on the team next year and his contract is not modified.

How a player leaves your team, whether by getting cut or by getting traded, it does not change the cap situation. The date on which he leaves the team does change things.

If he is cut or traded before June 1, we will carry $12.8 million in Dead Money in 2006. Meaning his cap hit for 2006 would go up $0.8 million from it's current position. And he wouldn't even be on the team. So there's no way this would happen.

If he is cut or traded after June 1, we will carry about $5 million in Dead Money in 2006, saving us about $7 million from his current cap number of $12 million. The negative side of that is we'd carry $7 million in dead money in 2007.

It's very possible Lavar could stay and change his $6.5 million roster bonus into a signing bonus. This would save us about $5 million or so in 2006. But it will be interesting to see if GW wants him around, or if he elects to trade him and get something in return.

No Seriously if they trade 4 Owens, eventhough he has no character, then we couldn't be stopped on Offense. You got the deep threat with Moss and the big, strong receiver with TO.

I would get him to sign a contract that says " Cause any trouble then your gone" and you don't get any $$$$.

Teams know that they will be doing us a favor and we will probably get little or nothing in return. So, they will either throw a low pick at us or just wait until we release him, which is highly possible.

I love Lavar and appreciate everything that he has done for us, I wish him the best.

hearing him talk after the game I had a feeling this might happen, but it is still awesome to hear. While he can make mistakes occasionally, it's really kewl to see an extremely talented guy willing to work through past problems and give up some money to stick with a team that's building upon something very positive. :biggthump :point:

i really think that lavar will be here for years to come. He is willing to work through his past problems. Also, i think what helped him in terms of agreeing to restructure is what happened this past season. Had we had another losing season, i believe that Lavar wouldn't want to restructure. But this winning season, and showing what we can do, making the playoffs for the first time in his career, I believe it showed him that we are doing something positive here, and he wants to be a part of it.

randy was traded with his contract from what i heard, and its a good contract for his talent. That means no hit for them, though tossing R Moss for anyone would be pretty dumb.

Gibbs had a shot at Moss when the vikes offered him up and he turned it down immediately without regrets or second thoughts. R Moss plays half-assed and Gibbs won't bother. They also passed up P Price, and you have to believe that williams gave them a reason to say no thanks. TO is more likely than either of those two (cause he helps other WRs and plays hard), but you know he also has zero chance of coming here, but thats much more likely than the others.

quick caution, lavar may be willing to rework the deal, but that doesn't mean the two sides are going to be able to meet on a figure small enough to keep a sane cap number in place...

I just don't see LaVar coming back. GW doesn't seem to be a big fan of him and that's enough to tell me the team will look to part ways with him.

Don't get me wrong, I love LaVar as a player but his contract is bloated and we could definitely lighten our cap load for the future by getting rid of him now.

Havn't you people read the papers, he and Danny have met about making adjustments to his contract to get it around 6 to 7 million next year in order for him to stay on the Redskins. He has met w/ Gibbs and Williams and both have acknowledged that they would like to have LaVar back. We will see what happens, but I wouldn't say he is gone yet, about 50-50 right now.

I have two authentic Arrington jerseys and a replica Ramsey to retire this offseason.

I'm only getting retired players from now on.

But I'd love to get a Marcus Washington jersey, at least with that name on the back it wouldn't go out of style. :)

Sadly to say it's not personal. The same thing happens to other players around the league when their cap figure becomes too high. So don't make it seem like the Redskins are any different from the rest of the league. The lesson that needs to be learned is not to sign players to that kind of contract when you know full well you have no intentions of honoring it just to get them to play for a few years and then be gone. Too much to pay one player and not win a championship. Remember, LaVar is also due a roster bonus of 6.(something) so when it comes to restructering his contract, good luck with the Postons. I hope the Redskins don't sign players to any more contracts like they did Samuels, Steven Davis, and LaVar. If they remain with the team, they have to be redone too many times.

The thing is they don't get paid the money LaVar get's paid. When you're paid as handsomely as he is you should have no problem getting on the field, or determining what your role is on the team. Defensive players that are paid LaVar price are game changers that make game changing plays every game, not just sometime. They are going to be on the field without argument and play the position the way it should be played. If LaVar, the way he plays can command his salry. I would sure love to see how much Lawrence Taylor could command if he was playing today. For what LaVar is being paid he should be turning in LT type games though I don't suspect he could ever come close. I can remember when there was no way any team would ever consider playing a defensive player that much money. An athletic player he may be, but the playmaking for the money is just not there, sorry.

I would be willing to bet Joe Gibbs wishes LaVar was a shadow of LT because he was the real reason why we had so much trouble beating the Giants during his first tenure. LT was a game changer.

Take that with a grain of salt because next week he may be saying something else. This is the second time I've heard him say this since we played our last game. This is one time it's not going to be all up to LaVar. This is still a business, and he's represented by the Brothers.

He is due a $6.5 million roster bonus by July 15 which can be converted to a signing bonus prorated over four years. This would save the team close to $5 million in cap space for 2006. The other option is to have him restructure his contract, something Arrington has stated he is open to.

right now he'd be 12 mill hit in 2006 without a restructure if we keep him (or trade/cut him before june 1st), after the 1st he'd be 5mill this year and 7mill next year (+the cost of replacing his spot on the roster). It looks like he might restructure to let the team pro-rate this year's bonus, in which case he'd be a 7mill hit for 2006 (but that'd be low enough to keep him). HOWEVER, until the cba is extended the skins can't make that move do to the 30% clause during the last year of an existing cba.
