Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I can't believe this poll is so close... what a disgrace
|
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I am born and raised in philly...IMO mayo on a cheese steak is rediculous. The only thing that should be on a cheese steak is steak, cheese & onions.
In philly mayo is never standard unless you order a cheese steak hoagie...which is a cheese steak with mayo, lettuce & tomato. It's not traditional but some people like it. Anyone near Philly who wants to try the best steak in the world should check out Steve's Prince of Steaks on Bustleton Ave in NE Philly. The best by far...their trick is to use liquified american cheese which gives you the consistency of cheese wiz but the taste of real american cheese...unbelievable! |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
This poll clearly reflects a non-Philly crowd's opinion of a cheesesteak. Many who are answering likely have never had an authentic cheesesteak from Philly. If I were eating the garbage they make down in Maryland and Virginia which they call cheesesteaks, I'd probably need mayo on it too!
Sorry to get all cheesesteak snob up in here, but jeez, mayo on a cheesesteak?? |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I can't believe this poll is so close... what a disgrace
This poll is close becasue most of the people voting are so far away from Philly that they have never tasted a real cheese steak. Any steak purchased more than an hour outside of Philly probably needs to be slathered with every topping imaginable just to muscle it down. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I just got into one of the dumbest arguements I've had in months at lunch with a co-worker. He's mad because Quizno's put mayo on his cheesesteak and he hates mayo. He claims that real cheesesteaks don't have mayo on them, and that he should know because he's orginally from Philly. He goes so far as to say that most people don't like mayo on them, and that's where the arguement started.
So, what do you guys think? Do you put mayo on a cheesesteak? I say that most people must like it and that's why Quizno's puts it on without asking. In fact, I feel like most places do that (I've never had a cheesesteak in Philly). If they put mayo on as a "default" topping most people must like it. [if I knew how to start a poll I would, can someone help?]
Why is someone from Philly ordering cheese steaks at Quizno's? That's like someone from Nappa Valley buying wine from Nebraska... |

I dunno. We have a cheesesteak place in town that makes them just how they're supposed to. They're greasy, drippy and the meat stands up on it's own. Fresh-baked bread, prime thin-sliced meat and Cheese Whiz (or your choice of cheese) and all the toppings you could want. A pretty good steak. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
Quizno's doesn't even have a grill to cook the steak on it.

We shoved a massive spoonful of mayo down this kid's throat. He ran down our steps and barfed in our backyard. I still crack up laughing about that story to this day.
Ohhhhh! THAT'S who you are! Thanks man. I hope your happy. I still to this day can't stand the site of mayo. In fact, I just threw up a bit in my mouth when I typed this. :vomit: Thanks again! Incidentally, I learned to never close my eyes again when someone offers me something to eat again. I guess I could've learned from a much harsher lesson. Perhaps I owe you another "thanks" :vomit: |

Did you ever eat one made within Philly city limits? |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I've had a Geno's one. It was actually comparable all things considered.
I've had a Geno's one. It was actually comparable all things considered.
Did you like Geno's? I'm interested to hear what a Philly outsider thinks. Somehow they've become the mecca of cheesesteak places here in Philly but I think they're way overrated. The meat comes out a little too thick and chunky for my tastes. They do so much business there that I think they're getting lazy with the slicing of the meat, trying to turn out the sandwiches as fast as possible. I like it to be sliced ridiculously thin. I'm a big fan of Delissandro's, which is on the northern side of the city. Then there's a place near my house in the suburbs which makes a great one. In fact I think I'll hit that up for dinner tonight! |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I think it was maybe the whole concept of Geno's "being" Cheesesteak Mecca. I definitely agree it wasn't thin enough for me. For the amount of quantity they have, it was definitely tasty. Our hometown place has a better flavor though. I forget how much I paid at Geno's, but here is fairly expensive, something to the tune of 5-6 bucks for half a steak. It's all prime beef though and homemade ingredients (minus the cheeses).
|
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
I eat both Geno's and Pat's in the same sitting. I thouhgt Geno's was better and I even eat that one second, meaning I was not close to being hungry anymore. I am not a Philly native.
|
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
No mayo.
Cheese (cheddar or American, NOT SWISS like John Kerry) Onions Peppers Grease Paper bag for the grease If it's not dripping, it's not a real cheesesteak. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
It's settled, I won't be telling my co-worker about this poll!

i gotta have mayo on mine

definitely no mayo |
A cheesesteak does not have Mayo on it.
BUT: I used to work at Jerry's sub shop. We had something called a "steak and cheese" that we'd eat with Mayo, Lettuce, Tomato, and hot peppers. It was good. But it wasn't a cheesesteak.
This is the fundamental argument here. A "steak and cheese" while very good with its lettuce, mayo, mato and mushrooms is not a "cheesesteak" at all. A "cheesesteak" must be steak with cheese melted into it on the grill or cheese wizzed. Plain and simple. Both are great. But one of them you basically can only get in Philly. I settle for the other just about everywhere else and they are delicious. This same argument applies to pizza versus Pizza Hut and Dominos. While I enjoy a fine "pizza" from Pizza Hut now and then there is certainly no way I'd call it real pizza. Just like the "subs" from Subway are just glorified sandwhiches and not really subs. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
You gotta put mayo on the cheessteak sub. It mixes all up with the grease and gives your wrist that nice little white-washed streak.
I've never been to philly and dont give a rat's ass what some philly douchebag says about some steakum sandwich... put mayo on that shit and shut up... I could see not ruining a ribye sandwich or prime rib sub... but steakums??? You might want to just drown it in ketchup and call it a day! |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
first of all, philly cheese staeks suck. no one puts cheese whiz on steak and declares its good. i see the mayo arguement this way, cheese steak no, cheese steak hoagie, umm um. yummy with mayo

You're insane. The cheesesteaks are the ONLY reason I'll go anywhere near Filthydelphia. It's the only good thing to come from Philly since Ben Franklin. |

But it wasn't a cheesesteak.
I'll buy this argument. While an authentic cheesesteak never ever has mayo on it (just some american or whiz and onions, maybe some peppers), a steak and cheese hoagie/grinder/sub has lettuce and mayo on it (tomato too if you want) and some grilled onions and usually provolone is the cheese of choice. most of the places outside Philly do not make it greasy enough, so the mayo is needed to make the sub a bit more wet. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
That's why you basically coat the grill in shit loads of vegetable oil before grilling! MMMMMm.
|
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
well, if a place was just serving cheesesteaks, yes you could do this. however, with the cornucopia of offerings most other places present, having a shit load of veggie oil on the grill just isn't feasible.

YUMS in D.C. is the best place to go for a cheesteak in the area, sure you may get shot or stabbed ordering it, but it is well worth it.

You have to risk your life to get a REAL Philly Cheesesteak too. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
Talking subs here in Tidewater Va. all the Lowes hardware stores have these little moble Dominic's of NY sub shops. They cook them all day and everytime I go to Lowes I leave hungry. Its like they have a fan blowing the smell by the doors.

Interesting. I like the chopped up meat technique better. You can get the slices of American cheese to melt together with the meat, and the meat juice tends to ooze into the cheeze while it's cooking. You get a real homogenous flavor, the meat has cheese flavor and the cheese has meat flavor. When you go to Geno's the standard issue is the chunks of meat cooked wit onions or without, and then served in a cheesesteak, and then the wiz is thrown on top. There's no blending of flavors there. It's just meat topped with cheese wiz. I like it cooked together better. Plus the Geno's meat isn't exactly prime rib, I think that's what gets me. It's chunky and meaty, but not that easy to bite through. I think it was Dmek who said cheeze-wiz on a cheesesteak was terrible? I happen to agree. A lot of Philly people love the wiz, but I'd much rather throw a couple slices of American on that bad boy. |
Re: A quick poll about Cheesesteaks
Steak and cheese sandwiches can have mayo. Cheesesteaks can not.
And Pat's is better then Geno's. |

They are good...but I just the thin slice technique is more authentic. Trust me if you like American Cheese on your steaks you must try Steve's Prince of Steaks and get thier liquid american cheese on there...try and let me know if you still like Delasandros better. To each his own though...as long as you are eating a genuine Philly cheese steak and not ruining it with Mayo or ketchup then it's all good to me. |
