wha? I feel great. Me and some fellas at the Merc bar here in NYC almost got in a fight with some vagiant fans becuase they couldn't take our taunting. You don't know what it is to hate the vagiants until you've spent some time here listening to those meatheads boast about how great their overrated, half-assed, POS team is. |
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
I agree that eventually we do need to go deep, but I also believe we keep running it like we did today, and we keep building Brunell up with those smaller, high percentage passes, and eventually receivers are going to get open deep. Today was about getting some confidence back into Mark Brunell and the rest of the offense. Hopefully they will build from there.
I think that the receivers were open deep, more than once. Don't get me wrong, Saunders called a conservative short game today that the skins executed very, very well. I still would like to see Brunnel start seeing the field better, but I think that will come as he becomes more comfortable in the offense. When that happens, the long passes will start happening. |
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
Portis opened a lot of things up and look what he can do in this offense when healthy. Its like this in the first preseason game we were moving on cincy before the int. Everybody was fired up, but when portis went down it seemed to have a domino effect on this team. Today we get portis back even though we played the texans and look at the results. Mohawk and all, Mr. Portis is the face of this team regardless how great a game anybody else has. Brunell did awesome today, mainly b/c of portis. Shovel pass was nice and 4th and 1 up the middle was better. J'ville will be a bit more steep of a challenge but i think we can do it. We finally broke the curse of the AFC. Nuff said i'm Drunk.

Re: Houston is THAT bad...
I think this team did a great job of spreading the ball around. If you were on defense where would you go? This offense had them guessing pretty much the whole time. just like a Redskin team BALANCED ATTACK. Also, having our play maker back was huge. I think this team needs to look at this as the first regular season game and set a goal for an undefeated record from here on out. If this team continues to improve an all fazes of the game the end of the year could be very special (shades of last year). Good job guys, and let's keep those penalties down.

Re: Houston is THAT bad...
Houston is awful. They had me worried on their first drive. All i can say is beating them is no way to gauge us. the true test is the weekend at fedex. I can assure you jacksville is pissed off. We still have to figure out how to get the vertical game working. The dump off's are nice and they produced great results. against houston.
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
The Texans are the worst defense I've seen in a while. Not only are they bad, but they looked as though they hadn't prepared for the game in any way. Bad players badly coached (on defense).
Having said that, you can only play the games on your schedule and there have been a few Redskins teams I could name in the last 15 years that would have sunk to the occasion. I like the fact that Gibbs wins the games he is supposed to win. Again, I think Brunell's performance is something to build on. Let us pray for the Health of Clinton. |

That's why I don't want to toot my horn too loud and will reserve my acolades for when we play and beat a good team (a playoff team) As much as I love wins I couldn'd get a good guage on the true progress of the team because the team we played today is terrible. At least we didn't play down to the level of competition. |
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
Houston is bad. so bad, that one player was enough to beat them today. a bit of hyperbole there, but seriously, against a playoff contending team we need to be using Moss and Cooley for more than little hitches. remember them?

Unless you were there, it's darn near impossible to see that on tv. |
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
I think they said it best during the broadcast. 3 weeks into the season, Al Saunders can now see what he has to work with in game situations with Brunell so you can cut about 650 pages out of that 700 page playbook. And Portis makes all the difference in the world.
I'm glad we won and looked good doing it. |
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
The nice thing about having success solely on the short game is that our opponents are going to have to gameplan towards that. Remember Saunders typically doesn't run the same plays week in and week out. I think versus JAX we'll see quite a few long pass attempts to Lloyd, Randle El and some other dude that's good at catching the long ball.
|
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
I will say this one negative thing - I think Rogers BLOWS! We will not make it very far without Springs. He really needs to get healthy.

I would like to beleive that, but it's not like Saunders asks Brunell to throw short. He sets up the plays with options for downfield passes, and short passes...Brunell checks down to the short passes and gives up on the deep passes. It's not Saunders, it's Brunell. |

Is that why Moss was in the backfield catching balls? Because Saunders really wanted Brunell to throw downfield? .... right... give me a break. |
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
Yesterday's short passing emphasis was definitely more game plan related. There may have been a few instances where Brunell checked down, but all the screens, slants, and dumps were by design.

I agree. Everyone is always looking for why we aren't good enough, or need to be better, or won't make it. It's so annoying. |
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
I think it's the result of all the losses (including preseason). Had that happened last year after our undefeated start, we wouldn't hear as much bitching. He'll hit a couple bombs (I hope) and all will be right.

Sorry, bud, no break allowed here. Watch the game films, break them down. Sure there were plenty of actually planned plays involving ARE and Moss on the short plays, but are you seriously trying to tell me that Lloyd, Moss and ARE (as well as Patton) did not have any downfield routes? WOW? How about the play when everyone was set up on curl routes (downfield) and Brunell hesitated too long to hit anyone. Moss stood there waiting, but Lloyd decided to keep moving, and Brunell hit him in stride after a long delay. Had it not been for the protection, that would have been a loss on the play. So I ask you again to watch the film, watch how many plays had receivers doing crossing routes downfield, or deep outs, and Brunell not giving them a chance and checking down to the short passes. The problem is, we only remember the deliberate short passes / dumps. Of course those are planned, but what happened when they were not planned? |

I agree with most of what you said except that there were only a "few instances where Brunell checked down". There were a lot. We just should not think for a minute Saunders is about not opening the offense. Sure plays are designed for Moss / ARE on short plays, but Saunders is losing sleep at night because he can't get Brunell to get confident in his ability to throw downfield. Saunders was salavating at the idea of having Moss and ARE creating separation in the secondary. That hasn't happened yet because Brunell is afraid to pull the trigger. I hope the 22 straight completions gave Brunell the confidence to open it up. Until that happens, we won't see a true Al Saunders offense. |

They weren't showing clips of our WR sitting and waiting for balls.. which usually makes for good conversation during a game. Especially it being Brunell, you’d think they would have pointed about Moss’ so called frustration. You saw film none of us have seen yet. |
Re: Houston is THAT bad...
He checked down alot? How many times exactly? Personally I didn't see many plays where he had the opportunity to check down, maybe 2-3 times at the most.
The majority of the pass plays were quick and short as designed per the game plan.
Together with the team's new associate head coach for offense, Al Saunders, Brunell and Gibbs came up with a plan to attack the Texans. It relied on lots of short passes and quick decisions that would allow the team's pass catchers to take advantage of Houston's overly aggressive defense. The plan worked perfectly. It doesn't take much to watch the receivers leave the screen, do you think they are getting a gatorade break when they are not inside your TV screen? Everyone is a little too preoccupied on those 22 straight completions to note that they were almost all short passes. Hey, we obviously disagree at this point, no biggy. But unless Saunders and Brunell get on the same page come next week, you'll be singing my tune after we lose to Jacksonville. The Jags have a swarming D and will snuff out all the small stuff. If we are to survive we will NEED to get the ball downfield and relieve the pressure off the running game and the short passes. Also, where are the gimmick plays? I haven't seen any yet, and would like to. |

If nothing else I admire Brunell's attitude and demeanor.
Houston's overly aggressive defense
snicker. while those were definitely plays meant to beat the blitz, i don't think i saw a Texan defender in our backfield the whole game. where were these plays the first two weeks? or were they called but just not executed well when played against a real defense? hope this was a reaction to all the blitzing and not just what the Saunders plays look like in practice. |

Unfortunately, I have to head to work, so I will have to post that tomorrow. There are more than you may think. Assuming you are correct, and they were all by design (they weren't, but I'll assume for a minute they were) this is the 3rd straight game that all Saunders / Brunell has done is short passes. That means our 2 million dollar OC is not worth it. I will obviously agree you play the game to your opponants weaknesses, the Texans could not stop the short plays so why stop? I understand that concept. However, it did not work vs the Cowboys at all, and was not very effective vs the Vikes either. The offense just looks remarkably similar in terms of play calling and Brunell's comfort zone. |
we're not going to do a gimmick play when were winning by that much
So when is a good time? A close game (vikings), a losing blow out (cowboys), or when confortably ahead (texans)? 3 different scenarios, all 3 games no gimmick plays. (not that we need a gimmick play to succeed, it just helps to keep defenses off balance.) |

Hey, I am right there with you. But you can't blame a guy for keeping his eye on the prize (the superbowl). I live and breathe Redskins, trust me on that. I see a flaw in our system right now, and I truly beleive that if we correct it, we will instantly become a super bowl contender. Like I said before, maybe the 22 straight completions helped Brunell gain confidence in a complex offensive system. We'll find out next week. ps- 3 losses in 4 games is one hell of a huge hole to get out of in terms of super bowl opportunity. Not impossible, but very hard. The faster we right the wrong, the better. |
