Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
I wish benching Brunell was the miracle cure, but it's not.
It's getting really old. Team loses, bash Brunell. Team wins, the haters are quiet, mostly.
I certainly understand your sentiments Matty. Brunell is NOT the sole or main reason for our woes. Due to the defense's inability to stop the run or pass, Brunell simply was not on the field long enough to make enough mistakes to lose the game. And benching Brunell would not miraculously cure our team's problems. In fact, benching Brunell would effectively end our season and make our problems worse, at least in the short run. However, Brunell, like much of the rest of the team, has been very inconsistent. Brunell has shown the ability to play very, very well when given time and open receivers. Brunell has also shown an inability to make plays when under pressure. He simply is not good enough to make up for deficiencies in other areas on the team. Given that he is the QB, one of if not THE most important player on the team, it should come as no surprise that he gets a lot of the flak when the entire team plays poorly. Right now, Brunell is the best option we have by a long shot. Let's just hope he can turn this thing around because we all know that if he can't our team is sunk. It would be a big shame if we can't field a good team with the kind of weapons we have on offense. |

Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
Gregg Williams. The D couldn't get themselves off the field. It almost seems like the secret is out on how to beat GW defenses. The blitzes are always picked up, and we constantly get sucked into screen passes.
On O, need to find some way to get the ball out of Brunell's hands and into Randle-El's. Today, the Giants D was at the point of attack before we were, especially Peirce on running plays. Suck ass game all around. |
1. Oline. They were the heroes last week and crap today.

Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
we lost in all phases of the game. we might have our hands full with tennesse this weekend. I know his stats werent all that good but Vince Young can hurt us.

right, cause mcnabb regularly throws for 100 yards and 50% completions in loses, as does eli or peyton, or.... sorry. it's not all brunell, but he didn't help us with anything today. 1. defense (coverage, playcalling - GW knows he can't get coverage, so instead of blitzing and hoping for the best (turn overs), he sits in prevent type defensive and watches yardage get chewed up... i know the blitzes were mainly picked up, but i mean, change it up, do something, please, just please stop playing like crap). 2. offensive playcalling (predictable, not well suited for dealing with fast/capable DEs and fast DTs, one deep throw all day) 3. brunell - sorry, but even including the above two, that's just not a good job. he wasn't skipping balls, but he did get unnecessarily anxious once again because of the hint of pressure, and that seems to account for all the jekyll and hyde we've seen. he's WAY to quick to put eyes on pressure. like kurt warner, his poise is gone. |

Our uniforms are dogshit. Can we at least look decent when we get kicked in the teeth?
WTF! You would rather SD powder blue, or the Jags teal or how about Carolina's whatever color you want to call that. BTW, oh wait, how about purple? BTW uniforms are hardly our current problems. We "played" horrible against NY, and NY was not all that impressive either. NY was just not as bad as we were. Our problems against NY are spread across the entire roster. It was a complete organization effort to "play" as embarassing as we did. Gibbs, Saunders and Williams should really take heat for this game. In contrast, it would not be fun if we won every game, nor would it be a "game". hail 44 |
So let's call out all the spades. The atrocious 3rd down D today. The big plays given up. No pressure on Manning. Shitty tackling. No run D. Shitty execution on offense. Missed FG by Hall, etc, etc.
Brunell is just one piece of what was a team wide problem today. He doesn't deserve to be singled out today.
THat missed FG by Hall was meaningless and a very poor call on 4th and short. We needed to TD's and a made field goal would not have done a thing for our team. Now if we go for it on 4th down and make it maybe it gives the team some hope. It also lets the O know that the coaches have some convidence in them to make a play when needed. Kicking only said that we give up and its a hopless. |

This paragraph from Tom Boswell says it best about out free agents:
On Sunday, Carter didn't have a tackle, much less a sack, Randle El had two catches for 10 yards and Lloyd, who now has 75 yards receiving in five games, didn't catch a single ball. Archuleta led the team with 10 tackles. |

Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
The whole team played like crap, no question about it. I agree with Boswell's general point that this team just does not show up unless their "backs are to the wall". You can't be great like that. You've got to be motivated to win every week. It seems like a silly thing to say, but I think that's the big thing. We come out flat and no one is able to pick us up, Sometimes, Portis alone can do it, but if he can;t no one else does. We are not in it mentally, so we get our ass kicked physically. that has to change.
What happened to our D? It is NOT the same and it's not just Springs and Clark. They do not have the same look at all, and it's very depressing. Those endless Giant Drives were unbearbale. We looked like a practice squad out there on D. The offense really seems to need a few drives to get their rhythm. It's like they don't think they can do it for the first few drives. And in a game where the D is having trouble, that's bad. But it was a six point game at the half, and we came out EVEN WEAKER. Where's the fire on this team??? As for MB (yes, I'm going there), sure, switching him is no magic bullet. But he's just not that good a QB. We know that--sometimes he has his moments still, but it's oftem not enough. I don't expect to see Campbell any time soon, but I will be happy when I finally do. because it's hard to win without a high-quality QB. Maybe Campbell's not the guy. But I am losing faith that Brunnel is. |

Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
I'm laying some serious blame on Gibbs, Williams, and the scouting department for not nabbing a corner with our 2nd round pick. Rocky McIntosh, while he may be a good player one of these days, was not even close to what we needed.
We need CORNERS to be able to do what we do on defense. Carlos Rogers has talent, but he's still too green to be expected to be a #1. Without Shawn Springs, we can't cover well enough to let Williams blitz. We have to use Archuleta in coverage where he's basically worthless. Horrible decision not to solidify the CB spot with better talent in the offseason. That's the single biggest thing that's killing us on defense. |
Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
nah, i'm a bit of an a-hole, and i respond to stupid posts, so i guess i'm asking for it.
|
Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
We did acquire Kenny Wright. Gee great. Was he really an upgrade over Walt Harris? Seems to me they're basically the same player.
|
Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
There's plenty of blame to go around. The defense played like a bunch of scrubs, I knew Tiki would give them trouble, but Eli throwing deep all day was inexcusable. Every one of the d backs spent some time in the toaster yesterday. It was just ugly.
The offense was terrible mostly because the O Line let the Giants D get into the backfield the whole day. As for Brunell...he looked like Brunell when he's under pressure. Horrid. Clinton had about 4 a carry, but it didn't matter cause they couldn't throw. It was a team loss. There's no one person to blame. |
Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
Which brings us to the goat of the week. (Drumroll) The winner is..... Dale Lindsey. Shut your big yap and get your guys to focus EVERY WEEK.
Amen! I did not like it when this broke in the media last week, and it seemed very uncharacteristic of a Joe Gibbs coached team, for that type of stuff to occur. Why take shots at Arrington now? It seemed unnecessary to me, and given how bad the defence has played all effort needs to be on fixing the problems with the D. I am not an Arrington fan by any stretch of the imagination, I even thought what Lindsey said was funny, but inappropriate, and Williams and Gibbs need to reign in the assitant coaches. Get the players ready and let things be settled on the field, not by the media. That game was putrid, but certainly the offensive line, and the entire defence were more rotten than the rest of the team. It is going to be a long season at this rate, and if this team does not focus and have the same level of intensity as the Jacksonville game this could easily be a 10+ loss, 0 - 6 in the NFC East season. This team does not have the talent were they can over look anyone, and after the fight the Titans put up in Indy, the Skins better be ready, or they will lose again this weekend. |
Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
I voted for the whole team, but in reality it was the DBs lined up 15 yards off the line of scrimmage every 3rd down giving everything away. Whosever decision that was is the culprit. Because they never needed to punt until the 4th quarter, and there was always a long separation between offensive possessions, the offense never got untracked. (It wasn't the only thing, but it was a great contributor.) And every time they showed the receivers, they weren't open. That's not the fault of the receivers, that's the fault of calling too many long patterns when the Giants were making sure the receivers were covered up top. If they had just run some patterns where they came back the DBs couldn't have gotten between them and the ball.
The problem was (mostly) the coaches on this one. (See also: starting with runs, not going for it on 4th and 1,...) |
Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
nah you know what?
the defense has been struggling, there are reasons for it, and everyone knew it coming in. but what's the offense's excuse? who's hurt? didn't we 'find our identity' last game? didn't we just add playmakers to the already productive team from last season?? our defense is hurting, no surprise. the offense needed to keep them off the field by completing some 3rd downs and sustaining some drives with all the 'upgrades' we did this offseason. this game was blown by the OFFENSE. the O-Line not only didn't protect Brunell, it also couldn't open up lanes for Portis. after pushing around Jacksonville's Dline?? absolutely unacceptable for this squad, and the biggest reason we lost this game. |
Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?

Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
I hope Sean Taylor really didn't do this. He had a terrible game yesterday.
The Giants and Redskins left each other not in the best of terms following Sunday's 19-3 Giants' win at Giants Stadium. Some Giants took exception at the way some Washington players especially safety Sean Taylor behaved on the three Eli Manning kneel-downs at the end of the game. Taylor and Rich Seubert, in as a tight end on the three plays, had a shouting match after the game. "Watch the tape and see what you think," Seubert said when asked about the scuffle. Running back Brandon Jacobs stepped in as peacemaker, but admits he's not a fan of Taylor's. "He's supposed to be a hard-hitting safety," Jacobs said, "and he is to itty-bitty backs, you know. "He's good, I respect him, but I can't see myself taking anything from him." "They tried to get some cheap shots in at the end," center Shaun O'Hara said. "I'm not going to say the Washington Redskins are a dirty team. But sometimes losing shows your character." Taylor had no comment on the incidents. |

Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
All of the above.
1. Mark Brunnel for not throwing over 100 yards. 2. Offensive line for not protecting Brunnel. 3. The secondary for not covering anyone. 4. Joe Gibbs for not go for it on 4th and one. |

I'm just going to have to be ignorant, but I've had my fill of Brunnel. Its not this one performance, its an accumulation of lame duck performances going back to when he joined the Skins. He was a weak armed quarterback when he joined the Skins and has gotten worse. He cannot or will not throw the ball downfield. Worthless as a quarterback can be. He was a lame duck in the playoffs and has continued that this year. He had good numbers against the Texans and Jaguars but he was throwing dinks and dunks and his backs and receivers was padding his stats. Teams that have a book on him (Cowboys, Giants and Eagles), don't let him get away with that crap. The Skins are only as good as Brunnel plays and right now they stink. |

His actions guarantee that we'll always get calls for personal fouls and unnecessary roughness. That said, he was burned badly on several pass plays yesterday and missed some tackles. It wasn't ST's best game. |

I agree that it wasn't his best game, but he also forced a fumble from a back who's made a point to not fumble in several hundred touches. And I think he solidified getting BS personal foul call when he spit on Micheal Pittman last year. The thing with Sean Taylor is, the coaching staff has to find a balance between letting him loose and reigning him in. What's the point of having a mad dog on defense if you want him to be a choir boy? As I said, I couldn't care less that he gets into minor scraps, as long as it doesn't result in penalties or suspensions. |

Re: Redskins v. Giants: Goat of the Week?
Taylor got abused by Burress.
More proof that as a team we completely stunk.
Taylor had no business being one on one with Burress. If he was THAT good at coverage, he'd be a corner. He's only on the #1 receiver when there's a blitz, and the blitzing has been horrible all season. He's going to look just as bad or worse in a couple of weeks in Indy, if he has to cover Marvin Harrison one on one. Ed Reed and every other good safety in the league are at their best when they can come over the top in coverage and cherry pick. Having to stay stride for stride with a #1 receiver all day would make any of them look bad. |

One candidate to replace Hall is 12-year veteran Todd Peterson, who converted 23 of 25 field goal attempts for the Atlanta Falcons in 2005, but was not re-signed. It is believed former Maryland kicker Nick Novak, who was in training camp with the Arizona Cardinals this summer, is among the candidates invited to Redskins Park as well. Hall, 32, joined the Redskins in 2003 as an unrestricted free agent, after spending the first six seasons of his career with the New York Jets. But the 10th-year veteran is frequently injured and only once since signing with the Redskins, during the 2003 season, as Hall been able to kick in all 16 games. Because of injuries, Hall appeared in a total of just 18 games in 2004-2005. Sources agreed that, because some team officials feel they can't always depend on Hall from a physical standpoint, a change could be coming. The veteran kicker did not appear on the Redskins' injury report following Sunday's game. But in the past, Washington officials have been frustrated by Hall's lack of availability because of injuries. He suffered a hamstring injury that limited him to eight games in 2004 and in 2005 played in just 10 games because of a quadriceps injury. Coach Joe Gibbs said that, on Saturday, Hall informed him that he was "a little bit tired with his leg." That prompted the Redskins to use punter Derrick Frost on kickoffs, a chore he has handled in the past. Hall hit one of two field goal tries, missing from 42 yards. In addition to his nine field goal conversions, Hall has made all nine of his extra point tries in 2006. For his career, Hall has connected on 203 of 272 field goals and 280 of 286 extra points. Peterson, 36, is believed to be the most veteran kicker who will take part in Tuesday's audition. He has converted 235 of 296 field goals and all but three of his 341 extra point attempts, for 1,043 points. He has scored over 100 points six times in his career. Yeah, because it was that 17 point field goal that Hall missed, that cost Washington the game... As far as the article, I can understand why they'd be frustrated with injury, but Hall is fairly reliable when he is healthy. If they cut him, it'll be a flashback to the Norv era when they went through a dozen kickers in two seasons. |

It looks like the coaches agree with me. It is time to panic. Godspeed John Hall.
Perhaps this will send a message to the rest of these layabouts that it's time to get serious. |
