Re: Dazed And Confused!
Look, Gibbs would be the first to agree tht things have been bad lately, and that this is his fault. He's said that over and over.
But he also says that the past buys you nothing. Maybe in the pre-cap era, with the Squires open wallet, BB built a good team. But Gibbs also coached three teams to SB wins, with 3 different QBs, and two different GMs. So they were both good. Who the f*** cares? What matters is how to fix our present problems. Should we fire Gibbs? My feeling is he's a good coach, even now (last years team went to the playoffs, no?) and that he has a talented staff. The team has played poorly, so perhaps the thing to do is get good coaches to fix it. Or we can start from scratch with someone else. I'm not convinved that's the solution, not yet. Let's see how Campbell looks and let's see what they can do in the remaining games to right the ship. Think back on the second Dallas game last year before we right off Gibbs and WIlliams, and think about the Jax game this year (with MB, no less) before we right off Saunders. Sometimes it is the correct move to fire the staff, even if it's the sainted JG. BUt it's not time for that yet. If Gibbs wants to play out his five year deal, I'm in favor of it. Maybe some are not. But it's not time yet. |
In an attempt to add a positive here; the D played well after giving up those big plays. they kept us in the game by stuffing the eagles 3 st. times in our territory at the end of the half. the iggles padded their stats by running the ball to end the game, at which point our D had been on the field too long. If you paid attention to the D playcalling you'd have noticed that GW did bring a lot of pressure & it worked often. Look at mcnabb's completion % - was below 50%. I thought the D was on the verge of turning itself around, but they needed some help & didn't get it.
I'm confident the D is improving (albeit, they got burned a couple times), but not the O.
I agree somewhat, I didn't really see a ton of pressure later in the game, but I think they did a better job downfield, couple that with some really poor passes by McNabb. I do agree with your assesment that the D is going to get better, Vincent is going to make a big difference down the road for whatever that is worth at this point. As far as our defense being out on the field to long? WHAT ELSE IS NEW! |

I would rather stick it up Gibbs A** so I could have a face to face conversation with you. |
Re: Dazed And Confused!
Yesterday our defense was out on the filed longer due to Sean Taylor missing tackles and adding two 15 yard penalties, as well as Carlos (The Ultimate Cushion" Rogers giving Stallworth plenty of room for quick grab off the line. Damn, Rogers pissed me off more yesterday than any other game. There were other breakdowns but those two players stick out the most in my mind.

Re: Dazed And Confused!
I think that the thing to keep in mind is not that Gibb's can't coach anymore because I do think that he can still but there are some things to consider:
1. Players now are more high maintenance. They need to be continuously motivated then at times a coach needs to back off. It's a tough balancing act. Back in the 80s and 90s Gibbs had a generation of players that he could count on doing what needed to get done. Players today aren't like that anymore. Gibbs has not yet adjusted to that in my opinion. 2. Look at any successful coach the second time around, Jimmy Johnson, Mike Ditka, Mike Holmgren, George Siefert and Gibbs. All were in a sense whether formally in informally given full say on personnel. It doesn't work. A coach is always thinking now short term win. A GM is thinking long term who replaces this guy who fits the budget, etc. You need two men doing these jobs that can work together. and no that can't include Cerrato and Gibbs with Snyder. 3. The Skins as an organization are still stuck in the pre salary cap era of building a team. The cap era method of building a team involves keeping your picks, drafting wisely. You only use big time contracts on those players that are special talents, like a Ray Lewis, McNabb, Manning. Those that just don't grow on trees, once in 20 year type players. Any player that is average or above average or good you don't throw big contracts at. If a player is good but not special you make a sensible contract offer in terms of cap friendliness and if it's rejected you move on and have a drafted groomed player ready to kill and prove himself waiting in the wings. We need to get back to basics, no more big contracts. We start accumulating picks drafting wisely. Cut all the cap friendly contracts in the offseason. We live with the one's that are not cap friendly. I don't want a 49ER situation where we are in cap hell forever. |

When I first came to the US I would watch the game at a bar (DB Coopers) in Palms, CA. Nice mixture of Gang Bangers and a various fans. Later I discovered the joys of DirecTV, then HD TV! Woohoo! Now I suffer the ineptitude of the team I love projected on a 7 foot wide screen in 1080 in the privacy of my own home. So the short answer is 'Sunday Ticket'. What a fucking depressing day. |

no what would help would be shutting down the LOSSES. come on being a Redskin fan is a unique and unfortunate position in the NFL. you have to admit, no team makes more money off their fans, riles them up to a more fever pitch, and sets us up higher for a fall. year after year. the season is basically a set up for the OFFseason. we have a right to be angry. more than most. |

What are you talking about? New O show Todays show is: I know somting, you know notting. patrick good, Mark bad. Gibbs bad, bad, bad...................Fascinating.......... |
Re: Dazed And Confused!
Isn't it the coaches fault for dishing away solid players for new sexy players and having that fail, thus forcing remaining players to get used to someone elses playstyle, new faces, new everything. This team is a mess and squarly in the lap of Joe Gibbs. He's no longer immune to the criticism from fans. I like to give my coaches 3 years to get things straight. 2/3 losing seasons isn't so hot, pair that with one improbable run to the playoffs and some really exciting games.
I cant comment on the Beathard comments, I wasn't really aware of football at that point, but I think many of the comments Offiss makes here have merit. Can anyone really argue that Gibbs has done a good job with talent evaluations and draft picks?
Perhaps too much emphasis has been placed on pass acomplishments when it comes to Joe Gibbs. Much of our trust, and hope has been placed on what he did in the past. I am a firm believer in the fact that, that which is past and gone is irrevocable, wise men have more to do with time and things yet to come. Gibbs has continually said since his return, the past buys you nothing, he's going to be judged on what he does now, though his legacy will always remain. The game is played much different now than it was when Gibbs left in 92. I do not believe you can be away from the game as long as Gibbs was away, come back and instantly begin to make personell decisions because of his limited knowledge of league. Bobby Bethard was known for his team building. It's what inspired Jack Cooke to bring him here from Miami after building that Dolphin team which holds the distinction of being the only team to go undefeated in a season. Bethard and Gibbs, like Gibbs and Casserly had their differences when it came to aquiring talent, but talent they always had. |
Re: Dazed And Confused!
Gibbs deserves some criticism for personnel mistakes. However, he has made some good moves. To wit:
1. Drafting Taylor instead of Winslow 2. 2. Drafting Cooley. 3. Marcus Washington. 4. Cornelius Griffin. 5. Santana Moss. All solid moves. You win some you lose some. They are 3 - 6 so the critics can say that the above points are neither "hear" nor "their". Ultimately how good a GM you are is based on how many games you win. Also, those who worship at the altar of Beathard should take some time and find out who the following people are: 1. Bob Slater 2. Tory Nixon 3. Walter Murray |
Re: Dazed And Confused!
There's no way Beathard made any mistakes.
He's not even guilty of taking Leaf. Hey everyone is allowed one botched pick, right? What's that, Gibbs took Desmond Howard! Oh the horror! |

Yoy're right, I've never seen a GM who didn't botch a few, but in Bethadrs defense, the proof is in the pudding. |

Re: Dazed And Confused!
1. Drafting Taylor instead of Winslow 2.
Now, first let me say I'd rather have Taylor any day, but both players have off the field incidents, and Winslow has had that compounded with being unlucky. Don't look now, but he has more receptions than any TE in the league, has 561 receiving yards, and 3 TD, the only TE ahead of him is TG with 588 yards and 3 TD. This means a TE on a team with a young QB, awful line, and a shuffling offensive staff in Cleveland has more yards than any of our receivers. What Im getting at, is Gibbs, I dont feel, would have gone wrong with either player in the grand scheme of things. |

I cringe to even think about it. |

I agree, 70Chip -- but you can't right Winslow off yet as a pro prospect. I think both will be excellent players.

Re: Dazed And Confused!
didn't bother reading that, but guessing its contents.
yes a good GM would help. yes, whoever's in charge of personnel decisions isn't very good at it (the failure rate on FAs CANNOT be 50% since so much money i involved), yes i'd like more draft picks. right now there's really nothing that can be done besides playing out the season. I do think a paring down of the staff is probably in order and that gibbs shouldn't be so passive and willing to delegate authority to anyone and everyone (the players call themselves in and out, they decide on uniforms, they get a club med preseason, etc, etc). but all of this has already been said before (dating back to preseason - really, all of it), so i'm not sure that repeating it 40,000 times after every loss is necessary. of course, that's why i usually wait till tuesday to even look at this site after losses. I'm really surprised by how much talk this last game brought up though... |
