Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
I checked my crackpot sources. And this is not something new. I didn't hear the show, I'll listen to the archived version later, but he apparently didn't specify enough on air.
But anyway, someone (don't know who) told Collinsworth back in the preseason that they needed the Brunell from early 2005 because Campbell wasn't ready yet. And there had never really been any intention to go with Collins long term except for in an absolute emergency. Anyhow, long story short-it's not new. |

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
ANd you have to remember that as far as stats are concerned Brunell gets credit for all the yards that Santana/Cooley tore it up after catching a short screen.
That's true, but you can say that about a lot of people in the league. You do still have to factor in YAC. |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
I try to listen the all the BS in the league I can get. It's not like I have any connections or anything. That particular item seems like total bs as I have not heard one peson in or out of the Skins org say anything negative about JC. With all the haters around the world, you woud think something like that would have surfaced before now.
However, I don't like hearing that |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
I doubt Collingsworth is lying or confused about what he was told if in fact that is what he said? But Gibbs has been delusional towards Brunell, which just goes to show how out of touch he really is with his ability to evaluate talent that is playing every sunday right in front of his face, the possibility exsists that Campbell may be a complete bust, I really can't imagine him being worse than Brunell? But if so what does that say about gibbs ability to identify talent? You would think the one area that he would be on the money is the QB position? Regardless if Campbell can play or not this is addition by subtraction, we already know we can't win with Brunell, and this last half of the season will go far in telling where we stand QB wise for the future, it would be nice to see Campbell excel but I wouldn't get my hopes to high.

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
I have some sources that say that Collinsworth like to say provocative, negative, critical things for fun.
Few people are going to be praising Jason Campbell to the skies right now. He is replacing one of the people with the most integrity and dignity in sports, Mark Brunell. No one on the team is going to dance a jig on Brunell's back while he is down. The reasons we drafted Jason are very sound. It was an excellent, bold move to draft a franchise quarterback when we had the opportunity. Campbell will have the rest of the season to learn from, and hopefully in general fans will be very supportive so he can just focus on getting himself adjusted to his new role. He has all the tools and he has the humility and winning spirit which are very important. I think Campbell will have a great career, will win at least one Super Bowl, and be one of the great Redskins. |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
Did I miss all those games that Campbell played where he showed everyone he can't play? I mean if they think he can't play they must be basing that on some type of evidence. Certainly no one would say a guy can't play when the guy has never even taken a snap. No, that'd never happen.
Let's allow Campbell a shot before any of us even bother fretting over it. The guy clearly has some skills. Yoy don't start at Auburn for 3 years and go 13-0 your senior year and have nothing to offer. Maybe he wont be Peyton but he certainly wont be Ken Dorsey. That's a guy who 'can't play'. |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
Campbell's performance in the preseason was IMHO superior to Mark Brutal's and infinately better than Collins.
Under a great deal of pressure, he showed a tremendous amount of poise and confidence. On top of that, he was able to make some throws that #8 hasn't made since he has been a Redskin. I'm cautiously optimistic. |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
I just heard him on the Dan Patrick show, he said he was talking to someone inside the Redskins organization and this person told him that they pray for Mark Brunell every night because the other two guys "can't play".
Just to clarify, the leak came from someone with the initials MAB. Anyone have a raging clue who that could be? |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
Remember Brunelle is second string so Campbell can be pulled a few times at halftime like joe liked to do back in the day.
|
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
do we really think that is possible? how can someone be THAT bad? i mean, brunell- while able to complete passes (short) he was TERRIBLE this season. not to rehash debates, but that is my opinion. its really disconcerning to hear...i'm mean honestly, he just tossed for 132 yards in a complete game! can't get much worse.

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
This is an old comment rehashed. I remember seeing it on this site back in preseason. I'm to lasy to look it up, but think about a few things...
Saunders hand picked Collins to come to the Skins as a backup. If he thought he sucked, he wouldn't have done it... even to teach the other guys the system. I say this because Saunders has a bit of an ego and I'm sure he thought he could teach it just fine by himself. Campbell has always been a winner. Look at the tapes we have posted here. He makes all the throws. Short, long, in the pocket, on the move. All of them. If he can progress towards the mental part of the game at all, he is going to be fine. The comment probably came from someone who is not a coach or understands the situations Campbell is put in. Running the other teams offense week after week is not the best spotlight to the untrained eye. Also, expect him to start slow. Many other really good QBs do. If he starts like Kurt Warner... GREAT! |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
I have feelin you'll be eating those words as Campbell tears it up.
You need to learn to look on the brightside. If you arent positive in your posts, believe me, Campbell will hear about it, and his play will suffer. |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
i have never thought much of collinsworth,he was a player with 30% talent when he played, and he's an even worse reporter/host/
commentator! |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
That was one stupid remark by Collinsworth among many! How can anyone know if Jason Campbell can play or not?
It's perfect to use the mystery source for Collinsworth, because if he turns out dead wrong he can fall back on the " I was just going on what I was told" excuse for his misguided remark. |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
What connection does Collinsworth have to the Skins? Who is going to talk to him? He is not respected by football people and he has no ties to the city of Washington or the team. Who in management would leak information indicating that the signature player acquisition of the Gibbs II era is going to be a boondogle? If this was coming from Wilbon or Boswell that would be one thing, but its not. It's coming from a 2bit hack who is wrong more often than not.
Maybe by high up he meant the guy selling hot dogs in the nose bleed seats. |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
Here is the exact dialogue from the show today. I think the key part is what I bolded:
DP: Clinton Portis, it looks like he's going to be out for the year. Now the Redskins have decided to bring Jason Campbell in as the starting QB. What's this signify to you as far as the Redskins and the rest of the season? CC: Um...they had to. And it's not even that Mark Brunell was that bad if you look at his numbers. It always just falls on the QB. But there had to be some sign of 'what does the future bring.' I mean essentially now they're selling season tickets for next year. The only thing that makes me a little bit nervous about it, and I won't telll you who it was, but I was talking to somebody in that organization and I was saying you know, "Tell me about the team, the QB situation and all that" and they said "We pray every night for Mark Brunell. Because if Mark Brunell goes down these other two guys can't play at all." And so I was like "You're kidding. You're talking about a #1 pick" But that was the comment. Now I only heard it from one guy, but it was a pretty prominent guy. So the initial feeling going into this season was that he wasn't ready to play. |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
What bonehead is going to tell something like that to the press, throwing Collins and Campbell under the bus like that? Whoever it is should be given an atomic wedgie.
|
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
So it's old news, nothing more and JC has had 9 weeks more to catch up.
|
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
There is a reason that Collinsworth was kicked off the A-team. There is no way that you can accurately predict how Campbell will do based on his limited body of work.
Look at Delhomme, Kurt Warner, & Tom Brady. You never know what a guy can be until he gets a shot. |

If he watched the games he could see that all he did was dump it off every play, which Campbell could easily do. |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
Allow me to break down why this statement is most likely false. First he says that Todd Colins is really bad. This cann't be true because Saunders knows what Collins brings to the table. If he was trully bad, they would have never brought him over from KC. Second nobody trully knows how good Cambell will be. Do you think the Rams knew how good Warner would be?? DO you think the Patriots knew how good Brady would be?? The answere is no, because if they did theose do players would have started from day one. Now ride the bench and only get a chance because of injury. The only think we do know is that Brunnel is terrible. I can't say how happy I am that he is gone. As for Cambel, we'll just have to wait and see.

Collins I do believe was brought over to help ease the transition of the new offense for the other QB's more so with the hopes they wouldn't actually have to play him, judging from what I saw in the pre-season I would be hoping for the same thing, the guy is awful. |

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
looks like a 3 month old comment. nothing to see here... not that'd it'd matter anyways. brunell couldn't get us wins with the current situation and we're out of the playoffs, so there's absolutely no reason not to start campbell and at least give him a chance.
|
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
Chris Collinsworth is a dogue bag, he always has been.
|
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
think about it you guys, how many good talent evaluators do the skins have anyway, not many? I'm not too worried about it. if Vinny said it, who cares, we all know Joe didn't say it, so who's left? Pat Gibbs?
Plus, what top level official with any self respect would crap on his own org with a scrub like Colin???? Go read the scouting report on Romo a few years ago with the cowboys, his biggest fault was his mobility! Just goes to show, its all BS until they get between the numbers man... |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
sucks to hear that, but i'm a little worried about campbell, didn't look promising in the preseason, we'll see i guess.
I have to disagree about the preseason. I thought he looked better than Brunell or Collins playing with 2nd and 3rd teamers. He made all the throws, he was very accurate on most throws and moved around very well. Did he make mistakes? Sure, but the only way he is going to get better is to play against live bullets. He'll be fine. Too much raw talent to fall flat on his face. |

Thank you Atomic! Collinsworth REALLY, REALLY, SUCKS! I have always hated his opinions and he has consistently slammed the 'Skins, whatever network he's been slumming with. He probably made the quote up just to try and put a damper on any shred of hope we have for the 'Skins to turn this mess around. I shudder to think that he's working for NFL Network, calling the games they have scheduled this season. Better check the batteries on the remote, so the mute button works! |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
what actually does marble mouth really know? better yet i prefer diarreha of the mouth collinsworth. He is the worst reporter on the nfl if you ask me. cant stand him.
|
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
they were callin for his benching in Auburn, then askin for his autograph by his sr. year when they went 13-0. The kid has shown the ability to improve, often more important than talent. and as many here have said ,C'worth doesn't respect Snyder et al & that has a lot to do w/his willingness to say something that he'll never have to back up.

Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
I like Chris Collinsworth, he's a fairly intelligent guy. I trust most of the things he says, he's fairly unbiased, and usually knows what he is talking about. Would you rather take football advice from him or Bradshaw?????? I don't know enough about this "inside source" to criticize him.

I don't blame him for having a negative view of the Skins' personnel moves, as many of us do. And I'm not blaming him for repeating what he was told. But I think he's basing this on the past Skins' drama more than what this source actually said. That's ok, we have a rep & unfortunately we've earned it. On the positive side, I'm glad that expectations seem to be low for JC, he can come out as an underdog. |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
Collingsworth is freaky idiot! Lets wait to Sunday to see if he knows what the hell he talking about.
|
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
My take on Campbell in college was that he could not get it done on his own. He struggled at times his junior year. He did excel his senior year, but they had a dominant running game with Williams and Brown, and he was making plays in situations where it would have been difficult to fail. Low hanging fruit. Deep passes on 2nd and 1 against overmatched defenses. That is not the situation he is going into here.
I think if he is put in situations where he has to carry the offense, it will be tough fo him. We must be able to run the ball. |
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
bottom line campbell is going to make mistakes, hes basically a rookie. but we will put up alot higher scores because he will stretch the field
|
Re: Collinsworth on Redskins QB situation
i'm very keen on seeing how campbell actually progresses during the game itself... let's see if he begins to pick up hot reads, deciphering tampa's cover 2 and the blitzes...
