Re: Grade Jason Campbell

From what i saw of Campbell today i'm really looking forward to seeing more of him. He was smart, made good decisions, pretty much did it by himself and the receivers because we had no running game, no defense, nothing to help him out, Moss and Portis were out, and he did enough to win the game if we didn't have a shitty defense.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

he had poise, a strong arm, didnt make many bad decisions.

for his first game, great job. i look forward to seeing him progress

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

For his 1st ever NFL action that was an A hands down. With an actual NFL caliber defense backing him up he would have gotten his 1st win today.

I don't know the numbers but didn't it seem like the Bucs had posession of the ball about 40 minutes of the 60? AWWWWWWWWWWFUL defense!

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I gave JC an A, because he didn't throw a single pick -- much more than I expected.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell
I'd give him a B+ and here's why:

#1 He threw for 19/34 for 196 yards and 2 TDs (with Lloyd dropping a 55+ yard bomb).
#2 He didn't make any big mistakes - no INTs and no fumbles.
#3 He evaded pressure pretty well.
#4 He spread out the ball and was willing to throw deep.
#5 He had no running game.
#6 The defense couldn't get him back onto the field.
#7 He was without Moss AND Portis.
#8 It was his first start.
#9 He looked poised in the pocket.
#10 For the first time this season, I was actually looking forward to seeing the offense hit the field.
I agree with everything you said,if brunell would have started this game i wouldnt have bothered watching it,B+

Chief X_Phackter 11-19-2006 08:45 PM

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I gave him a B, and now that I think about it I probably should have given him a B+/A-. For not having a running game what so ever, and pretty much no defense to back him up, he did great. He put the ball downfield, a couple were short, but that will come with more reps. He had good zip on the ball, good movement in the pocket, and I think he completed passes to seven different receivers. All good things. I think that if we had done a better job run blocking, and if the defense had showed up a little we definitely would have won today. I can't call what is wrong with the defense, it just doesn't make sense. The talent is there, they just don't get it done. Good Job JC!!

A. Srew it, he deserves an A. At least he threw down field.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I also think Jason is going to be the kind of QB where we're never out of a game. With his arm strength and acuracy, if we're down on the scoreboard, he has the ingredients to bring a team back. I never felt that way with Brunell.

Redskins_P 11-19-2006 09:14 PM

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I gave him a B. He looked really poised in the pocket and made some nice throws. Main thing....he converted some critical 3rd downs for us. If that first pass he threw was thrown to Moss instead B.Lloyd, that would've been a td easily...

Has to be Mark Brunell.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I was going to give him a B, but that pass to Thrash he made while under big time pressure gives him the plus.

1st start, trying to make a comeback, no INT. For a first start that says a lot. He had some under throws and over throws that cost him an A, but considering he has had about 5 practice days with these guys he did extremely well.

The season is lost, but we now have something (someone) good to watch!

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

The question should be what was there not to like about JC today. I think he did everything we could have realistically expected him to do, and maybe then some. He looks so calm and poised out there, that's what impresses me the most.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

In his first game as a pro he was a small upgrade over 2006 Mark Brunell. While I'm sure there will be some rough outings in the future, he's going to get allot better.

Imagine if he had a healthy Portis and Moss!

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

JC gets an A from me. His first start looked a lot more promising than anything I've seen in a while. I could see him adjusting, like when he bounced a comeback in to Lloyd and then threw high the next time (almost killing Lloyd in the process). He wasn't perfect, but considering the talk on this board was that he was going to throw for 150, two picks and no tds I'd say he was damn close.

I love whoever gave the kid a D. I bet it's the same guy who called the Venus de Milo some crap because it had no arms.

Redskins_P 11-19-2006 10:04 PM

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

Another key note on Campbells performance, he completed his passes to 7 different receivers. At least he's spreading the ball out.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

Didn't see all of it. But I did see some nice escapablility and an a good arm. He also seemed to make some good choices. All in all, for a first start - very nice.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

He did his part to put us in position to win the game. On the Mark Brunell scale, that's a D (sorry, couldn't resist).

A+/B-, he earned it.

But seriously, I think I'm being a bit generous, maybe overanalyzing the conditions (he certainly didn't have A level production, not even close). If you gave him an A, you must have loved the job Brunell did, or just are horribly biased.

Agree with all of the positive evaluations. Just wanted to add that hitting his receivers in stride on long throws was something that has long been missing on offense. Nice to see it back. This kid can play. Loved the play when he shrug off a tackle and made a beautiful throw.

I gave him a B+/A-, but would have given him an A had Lloyd caught that ball. With that completion, his stats would have been 20/34 for 252 and 2 TDs and 0 INTs; those are "A" numbers, especially for someone who's making their first start with an offense lacking two Pro-Bowlers (Portis & Moss). It's kind of unfair to hold Lloyd's inability to catch the ball against Campbell, but so be it.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I was very impressed by Campbell's play today. It seems to me that he is able to see the whole field and move through his progressions.. That is the great intangible for quarterbacks. Also his check downs are open in space which I think is a function of his arm strength. The defense has to respect the deep ball. I hate to admit it, but the Brunell haters were proved right to that extent today. His willingness to fire the ball downfield made this look like a different offense at times.

Having said that, I gave him a B because I think he can improve. He short-hopped a few easy throws. Also, I would like to see him show a little more enthusiasm and leadership out there. Being laid back is a shitty quality in a QB. But, those are things that can be fixed.

The kid can play. He can most definitely play.

But that's why its a low percentage pass. Lots of chances for something to go wrong.

Lloyd usually doesn't get seperation, and he compensates in his game by making that type of catch. It certainly would have made Campbell's statline look a lot better (and I certainly don't hold it against Campbell), but it still perplexes me that people could be so unimpressed with Brunell, and are that quick to want to give Campbell an 'A'. If you use the same standard (which I'm not sure you can do, given the loss of Moss and Portis, but I'll continue), it was a sub-Brunell day. So 'A'? That's being biased.

I gave him a high grade because he did what he had to to put us in position to win. Then again...so did Brunell.

But because JC looks prepared, I now agree that he should be playing at this point in his career. Therefore, the switch was made at about the right time. Another "trust Gibbs" situation on my hands, if you will.

You must admit that Campbell holds the promise of taking this offense to places that Brunell simply couldn't. Brunell ran the offense on the kiddy field and with Campbell we've moved up to the big-boy field. The Bucs defense was definitely stretched at times today. Yes Brunell took to much blame, but on their central argument that Brunell's lack of arm strength/caution was choking the engine, I believe that the Brunell Bashers were thoroughly vindicated today.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

given the situation:

1st pro start.

against a greedy TB pass D. I don't care what the rankings are, barber and bolden and brooks are some mean ball hawking defenders... I expected the worst.

not having ANY running game

not having a #1 wideout

he earned an A. Lloyd dropped that first pass. It hit him in the hands and thats all you can ask your QB to do. Also, his throws that were a little bit off, were usually erred on the side of caution... overexaggerated to the place the defender wasnt.

If you're going to miss, hit the ground, and not a defender... thats a good thing.

His stats would have been also better if the bucs hadn't gotten away with 2 pushouts. The one where lloyd came down on his head was a beautiful catch, and there was another one too...

I just hope our defense gets in order by next year...

I am using different standards for Brunell and Campbell because (1) it was Campbell's first start and (2) Moss and Portis were injured. Neither one of us thought Campbell would look good today (I said he'd throw for 180 yards and throw 1 TD and 2 picks and you said he'd throw no TDs and 2 picks), but he exceeded our expectations. A 92 QB rating and 2 TDs and 0 picks is a good day for any first-time starter.

If it were Brunell, I would have given him a B instead of a B+/A-.

I agree 100%. If 2 years from now he has the same performance he gets a B at best. The 2TDs and 0 ints from this D at their home impressed the hell out of me for a first time start.

Game management looks like its instilled into the kids head. (one thing Ramsey didn't have....) If hes a big-play guy, who's hard to sack (and doesn't fall into the fetal position when someone touches his blind side... lol) and he manages the game well... he's going to be a great QB.

Now we have to work on the rest of the team...

not much to say....no running game, no D, but still 2 TD's and no Int's or fumbles. He moved around in and out of the pocket and threw fairly well.

But that performance, although more than acceptable all things considered, didn't do it. I'm not doubting it will happen; probably later this season. I would say I'm encouraged, but I expected this. What I was impressed with is that he took shots without turning the ball over. But as much as we complain about check downs from Brunell, Campbell only completed 55%, so hopefully in time he will learn when to find his back open to better sustain drives.

And a running game wouldn't hurt.

Given the conditions, a very solid performance.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

JC played well considering he had no portis or moss. But some of the play calling was terrible. Now that being said if we had a defense that could stop someone the results might have been better. I am starting to think Gregg Williams defensive scheme has been figured out by all in the nfl.

Hog1 11-20-2006 07:49 AM

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

He played well enough to win. he had no rushing to help out. The offensive line is highly suspect in protection, and terrible in run blocking. Sooo....yea, he did a good job. I'm very happy with him. From the pass play in the first qtr when he dragged around the defender on his shirtail and still completed the pass!!! LOOKS GOOD

firstdown 11-20-2006 09:51 AM

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I was one of the people who gave him a C. While I think we may have found our future QB its too early to tell and we were playing a 2/7 team. Their D is ranked around 23rd and we only converted 4/16 3rd downs and alot of his yards did come from a prevent D. Now with that being said I was pleased with his first start and thought that he looked comfortable behind center for his first start. I agree with what most people have said here about him but I will reserve an A for a W. While the D looked bad we did hold them to 20 point and did not convert enough third downs (yes I know we had no running threat).

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I'd give him a B. He looked very good finding the open receiver, going downfield, and evading the rush, but he did miss open receivers high and low a number of times. His accuracy could've been better, and we had some three and outs because of that when a drive should've began, but I'm just thrilled that he recognizes receivers are getting open and tries to get the ball to them unlike "Make One Read" Mark.
Overall pretty decent. A lot of QBs can look good they're first game though. What I really want to see is how he progresses.

I didn't see him look off receivers too much and his passes seemed a bit high on some of the shorter passes. Which leads me to this somewhat peculiar question. Is it harder for a tall qb to throw short to intermediate passes to short wide receivers?
no, but that's kinda his thing. his deep ball is much better than the shorter stuff, which is only half winds some times. mentioned that a couple weeks ago though ;) it's the same as it was in college... hopefully he can work on it.

His biggest weakness right now does seem to be getting the right touch on the shorter passes. A lot of that comes with developing trust with his receivers and knowing each other's tendencies.

I don't want to make this about Brunell, but he consistently spread the ball around this season as much as Campbell did yesterday. That's not what separates the two of them.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

I think the poise he showed was the most positive aspect of his game. With that poise and ability to run the offense on the road everything else should develop over time.

hail_2_da_skins 11-20-2006 12:46 PM

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

Jason Campbell had a very good game. He showed poise and the ability to throw downfield with accuracy. Too bad the receivers dropped some. He also had good pocket presence, he knew when to take off and run and when to check down. He moved around well in the pocket. He did all this when Tampa Bay was sending the kitchen sink at him. The offensive line play on passing down was good. The blocking on running plays was mediocre. The defense didn't help at all. They were on the field too long and didn't the Skins offense enough opportunities. The two turnovers were touchdown saving turnovers that prevented scores but didn't give the offense an advantage.

Re: Grade Jason Campbell

B+

He needs to work on his consistency, but he looked good for his first start. Honestly, I'm not sure he did much better than MB would have done, but the big difference is that this is JC's starting point - MB had peaked.

Hopefully there are exciting things to come!
