Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
Wow, I guess our expectations of a quality defense has fallen so far that we don't even blink when they get shredded for 250 yards on the ground and instead put the blame on a QB making his 3rd start who had pressure in his face all day.
That's Redskins fans for ya. |

So you had higher expectations of Campbell making his 3rd start vs our entire defense?? I'm not sure if this speaks to how bad our defense is or how great some think that Campbell is. |

Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
Campbell made 2 mistakes, the defense got torched for 2 qrts. I don't see how Campbell was worse than the D.

Well obviously if the D playing so bad today didn't bother you, and instead a QB making his 3rd start playing poorly bothered you more, then you tell me what your expectations of the game were today. I'm assuming that if the D getting shredded for 250 yards on the ground doesn't surprise you, your expectations of the D today must not have been that great. |

if you are defending campbell by the him being inexperienced, i think the title of this thread is wrong. its not how they played relative to the circumstances, its just performance. i think its kinda rediculous how u are reacting to people who think campbell was the worst player today, "thats redskins fans for you". kinda offensive |
I'll let the D off the hook because really we only scored 14 points...
On a side note if I may, I saw some interesting research the other day about points scored in a game. Apparently, over the past 25 years, when a team scores 13 points (exactly) in a game, they have won nearly 30% of the time (sample size of approx. 800 games played where one team scored 13 points), meanwhile teams that have scored 14 points (exactly) in a game have won less than 20% of the time (sample size of approx. 800 games playd where on team scored 14 points). Anyhow, thought that was kind of interesting. |
Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
I'm going with the defense, and it should be plain to see for anyone who watched the game. I don't know what type view TV watchers had of the Norwood touchdown run, but I was on that side of the field, and that was about the worst example of tackling I have ever witnessed, and by more than one player. Vernon Fox wiffed, and Carlos Rogers had a perfect angle to at least knock him out of bounds, and he turned around in circles like he was beginning a balet. That was the most demoralizing play of the game.
The play of Jason Campbell was suspect today, but I can live with that because he young and learning. We all knew he was going to make mistakes that may cost us at times, but that's the price we knew we had to pay in developing a young QB. However, that does not mean that the mistakes he made didn't contribute to the negative outcome. We all know the devastating affect turnovers can have on a game, but without a doubt, our defense was our biggest nemisis in today's game. |
Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
Well I didn't see the game so I can't comment on a goat. I do know though that Rex Grossman had a 1.3 (not a typo) passer rating today, the Texans had -5 total yards passing today, and yet those teams found a way to win. Would be nice if, in spite of whatever struggles JC had, we could have as well.

Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
Because he was 18/38 for 217 (5.7 yards an attempt) with 2 INTs. That's not good enough to win. Brunell's worst game wasn't that bad.
It's not all his fault (his statline...the game was never in his control), but either way, he didn't get it done today. He wasn't as big as a problem as the defense, but IMO he regressed today. Let's hope he gets back on track vs. Phily.
There are going to be days like this so be patient. He is going to need more game experience and the off season. |
Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
This is the first time I've had to disagree with you Matty. (Your anger is coming out in your posts.) The two of you will have to agree to AGREE. I think if you review your posts (your's and BigC's) you'll find you're both saying the same thing: if one just saw the game and knew nothing of the "history" going in, Jason Campbell is definitely a possible selection as the goat. But if one factors in that it is his third start, he shouldn't be. You are just differing on whether one was supposed to factor this in for the poll or not.
(While you were horrified, adjusting for the fact that Springs was out, I thought the defense did reasonably well for much of the game. Even though Vick was completing passes, I felt the pass defense was just a hair off most of the time instead of just looking silly as they did earlier in the season.) |
Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
I voted for other because the goat is Gibbs. He constsntly talks about getting away from what we need to do but the one in charge of keeping the team doing what it needs to do is Gibbs. This loss is on him and he gets my goat vote.

**post deleted due to being completely inappropriate**
I agree with what you're saying that we can't expect Campbell to be a star all of a sudden and he needs some time. However, the language was highly inappropriate. So...First warning. Say anything even remotely like this again, you're done. |
Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
Hands down -- defense.
We should have been able to win after getting up by 2 TDs. However, the offense did fall off rather quickly -- our only points came early in the game. |
LOL. Isn't JC in his third year? Does one year make that much difference?
Second season. Fifth season in a row with a new offense. And while Campbell made a few bad plays, I think the second pick would have been a touchdown if Betts had made any kind of attempt to chip the blitzing linebacker(which Portis does better than anyone), to keep Campbell from getting blasted at the point on release. However, my goat of the week would have to be the coaching staff. Why, when you've racked up 80+ rushing yards in the first quarter, basically abandon the run in the second half. They went from 90% runs to less than 50%, when they were still ahead, and every back on the roster was running all over them. |
Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
My bad guys. I guess Romo has 2 more years than JC, and that would be significant -- especially since he didn't learn a new offense this year. :(
|
Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
Vick could have run on every play and gotten 10+ yards if he wanted to.....that's a problem. He didn't need to, but if the game was closer at the end, I couldve seen him scramblling more often, tearing us a new A$$HO*E.

Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
Well, Campbell's first INT was painful, but he didn't have a chance on that play. He should've eaten the ball but he's a playmaker (GREAT run for a first down to set up a TD in the first quarter and plenty of deep balls) and tried to do something. After he completely torched them in the first quarter, the Atlanta defense just started blitzing EVERYONE every play so he wouldn't have time to throw. It worked great. It would've worked on ANY QB. We should've used 2 TEs and kept Sellers in at all times when it started, but we were still using 1 back and 3 receivers most plays. Campbell had no chance, so I can't blame him for the bad INT to a lineman or the loss. Thankfully, Betts didn't hurt his shoulder on the tackle.
I have to pick the defense again. Yes, I know they're decimated by injuries, but the guys on the field need to step up. Vernon Fox looked good again. Ade Jimoh played CB great after subbing in for the injured Kenny Wright, who was in for Springs. Ade had 7 tackles. Andre Carter had 11 and a sack and was being held ALL day. I don't remember one big hit by Taylor all day. I was hoping he could whack Vick in the open field, but he missed the hit on the one good chance he got. We did knock Vick around though, hurting his wrist and his leg, but we let the RBs run all over us and Ashley Lelie suddenly remembered how to catch the ball. Rock Cartwright, nice blocked kick. |

Sounds pretty cut and dry to me. Maybe "goat of the big picture" would have been a better title, than some of us wouldn't sound so narrow minded, as you like to put it. |
Re: Skins/Falcons goat of the day
Split the goat between the O Line and Defense.
O Line not giving Campbell much to work with. For the offense to be successful, the kid's gonna need time to throw. And his receivers need to stop dropping the damn ball (Cooley). Defense had 2 starters missing (Springs, Vincent), and had to lean heavily on the front 7 to stop the NFL's #1 rush offense. Atlanta got 2 TDs through the air, on 8-16 passing. |

I understand "goat of the day" to refer to this one particular game. If you wanna factor expectations into the equation, then "who was the biggest disappointment" would be a more appropriate title. If we use your logic Matty then JC would be exempt from ever being the goat, as would every other rookie or young player on the team. |

I said Other, and by that I mean anyone that touched the field after that blocked punt in the 4th. It was like watching a bunch of kids running around the field like idiots. Honestly, it was embarassing.
