There was and is no way Randle El could ever have lived up to that contract. I don't care who your QB, or your coach, or anyone is. You aren't going to have success if you don't draft or bring in quality players who meet or exceed their pay scale.

And this is hardly an isolated incident. The incompetance is ongoing. Anyone think that TJ Duckett deal made any sense at all? The guys gone in another month, and so is our 3rd round pick.[/QUOTE]



First I want to say welcome to the board......

This general topic has been hashed and rehashed here ever since the team started losing games, and it became painfully obvious we were not going to play up to expectations. Randle El is a playmaker. His productivity has been curtailed because we haven't as yet, found the most creative ways to utilize his talents. He does have a long term contract, and considering the length of time we expect him to be here, I think he will become more effective as he's intergrated more into the offense. The jury is still out on different area's of this team, but some things need time to become the best that they will be.

I too have often shook my head on the Duckett trade, so if you have reservations about that one, you're not alone.

I think we signed Brandon Lloyd before we signed Randle El, there was just a short spand of time between the signings.

No, its not his fault that we run the ball, but it is the front office's fault for signing him to a run first team- along with Brandon "model citizen" lloyd. Now, i would agree that ARE hasn't been a horrible signing- we def. overpaid for him, but i do see him as value adding- though he isn't returning many punts these days. While carter is playing better (and has a lot of tackles sunday) a couple of games does not a season make...

AA is not even worth further comment, neither is the model citizen.

far as i'm concerned, i don't want Betts back if we keep portis- which we will do. Let him go, use the money we would pay him to beef up CB or D line...whats the point of paying another guy starter money when we already have one of the highest paid back in the league! If we think Betts is THAT good, then let Portis go- which would be problematic given his injury and lack of stats. (relative to his workload).

There seem to be much bigger fish to fry in this free agent class than ARE. He appears to be one of the only keepers IMO...

To be honest, I'm not even quite sure I understand the meaning of the topic of this thread, ie "Randle El Signing Show's Why Skins Can't Compete" What does the signing of Randle El have to do with the teams inability to compete? The reason the team can't/don't/won't/compete is because of their inconsistency, which we've witnessed since the pre-season. It's not that they can't, it's that they haven't, at least this year. That does not neccessarily mean we will continue down the same path.

As for Randle El there's two things I would like to see, one he can control, and the other, the coaches have to help him with. One, when he field's punts, I'd like to see him do more of what he did in the Colts game. He fielded the punt, and went straight ahead, split two defenders, and took it to the house. No more running east & west. Two, I would like to see the coaches find more creative ways of getting him the ball aside from the obvious. There are more ways to get him involved aside from the ocasional option pass, and the routine reverse. It's up to the coaches to get that acomplished.

all along we knew that ARE was a bit overpaid. that's just how we roll. we sign no one unless it's for 30million. you should go apply as waterboy. he's still somewhat productive though so it's cool. it's one thing to pay the man and have him do shit.

People get so hung up with the numbers, all that really matters are the years and the signing bonus. And with the way we constantly re-work deals no contract is set in stone. There is constantly a 3 year plan in motion.

I agree but again the bonuses hurt us, atleast when I say overpaid I am talking signing bonus, because their yearly salary is trash.

I said that exact same thing here a couple years ago. We haven't heard Dan Snyder complain about his spending yet. Maybe he will if he begins to see empty seats at Fed Ex on Sunday's.
