Re: Mort on the Portis trade rumors
Clinton Portis is the best football player we have. He was injured the entire time he played last season. He will be back up over 1500 this season.
And, I would point out that Jeffrey Lurie has exactly the same number of Super Bowl wins as Snyder. Almost doesn't count. People will remember their teams scornfully as they do the Vikings of 70s or the Bills of the 90s.
and that makes me laugh...and laugh and laugh. F the eagles. I hope they lose forever so I can go on laughing. |
Re: Mort on the Portis trade rumors
Betts showed he is more of a Gibbs style runner anyway... I would be very comfortable with him as our number 1.... I just worry about the QB.
Gibbs said "NO! We are not trading Portis" and I believe him.
Thank God! Why in the blue hell would we trade Portis? |
Re: Mort on the Portis trade rumors
Portis is also sooo damn good without the football- a devastating blocker. I look back at that Tampa game in 2005 when he put Shelton Quarles to friggin' sleep. Hahaha! Gibbs LOVES Portis and plus he's already restructured his contract for us. No way in holy hell Portis is going anywhere. Also, this front office has showed us so far that the theme for this offseason is stability and restraint. Trading a 25 year old franchise back capable of breaking off a TD every time he touches the ball would ridiculous.

L Tomlinson L Johnson F Gore W Parker These guys all carried the load and I probably forgot a couple. It doesn't happen as much but it can be done. I know that Portis has plenty left in the tank. The ridiculous rumors were started by people who can't see the big picture. The same people that annoited the Giants then Cowboys then Chargers and now the Patriots. The same type that says Taylor is the greatest player to ever suit up after the Carolina game and then say that he is "mediocre" because he had to pick up the slack for an injured defense that lacked talent on every level.
I agree with the thoughts here, but E James had a terrible time in AZ :/. I'd add S jackson T barber and B Westbrook to the list though. |

Yeah, because Gibbs just loves tailbacks that fumble repeatedly in the red zone and get in the endzone twice in eight starts... |
Re: Mort on the Portis trade rumors
there is no way we are going to trade portis, we just turned some of his this years salary into bonus money, we would never do that if we were thinking of trading him.

Re: Mort on the Portis trade rumors
The problem with Clinton is that most of us just want him off of our team. Between the injuries, complaints, media outburts, lack of production, salary, and chemistry, (ie war of wards with Brandon Loyd) I don't think its a good idea to trade him this year, but i'd love to have him gone by next year so we can i one of the upcoming running backs like Jacksonville, or St. Louis has.

"most of us?" I certainly don't, read the comments on this site & I think you'll find that 'most of us' feel he's a tough back that runs & blocks well, plus a team leader. He gets a pass IMO for the "war of words" w/Loyd, cause BL has sparked unrest all his short career w/his teamates & coaches. Bottom line, Gibbs brought him here & expects him to play & get 20 carries or so a game, even if Betts is healthy. |
Re: Mort on the Portis trade rumors
I've only heard a little about this, and the first time was Fri night from a drunk Dolphin fan. The second was this morning and he was saying we traded for a 3rd, and 4th round pick. Doesn't make any sense to me, simply because we would be receiving a draft pick instead of throwing them away. But either way, I stand behind Betts as I always have. My major problem is if this has some truth, I spent way too much on CP jerseys.

Re: Mort on the Portis trade rumors
tough back? Please, we got ripped off by getting him, he gets paid like a top back but never produces like one. He speaks out against the team's coaching, decision making, His biggest upside is his football savy, and that's not really sayin much. This year he needs to put up some decent football numbers, and minimize the complaints, or get out of town. Maybe find a job with the NFL network or something.

I hated the trade for him cause we lost the best cb & we gave them a 2nd rnd. pick! But that's water under the bridge, CP got here & in his 1st 2 seasons carried the ball 20+ times a game, racked up tough yards when we had little passing threat, blocks ANYBODY that gets near the qb & took on a leadership role. A lot of guys don't play their best football after signing big contracts, but CP isn't one of them. Yeah, he was hurt last year, but even the injury that started the preseason was a play indicative of how hard he plays the game. So yes, I'll say he's a tough back & once he's healthy this year, he'll get back to the 1,300 & 1,500 yard form he had in 04 & 05. He may not get the #s cause we'll run Betts more, but he'll make plays & get in the endzone. |

No it doesn't. I don't recall him lending to much support especially when his numbers don't reflect a good days work. Though i do recall questiong why we got away from the run game. Excuses for fumbles, complaints about preseason, questioning roster changes, advice on free agency, complaints about workouts, ect. So what i would like to see is more production from him. I may be a little biased against him being around longer than the next upcoming year, fine we all have our preferences, but can we all agree to more production? |

1500 yards and putting the team on his back to take them to the playoffs 2 years ago wasn't enough "production" for you?! Are you kidding me? |

So a guy who leads the team in rushing, carries the team to the 2nd round of the play-offs, and who's only injury problems resulted from !CHASING DOWN AND TACKLING A DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN A PRESEASON GAME! is not tough? He needs to put up "decent numbers" this year? What, the 1200 and 1500 yards he gained the first two seasons don't warrant anything? Oh, right, he didn't lead the league in yards last year b/c he got injured !CHASING DOWN AND TACKLING A DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN A PRESEASON GAME! What an inane post. |

I had just started to argue against what he did two years ago, but alas ive changed my mind. Rather than tell me what he's done, address the points that i made. He played well in our run to the playoffs. I consent that, this is his fourth year with us and i want to see less tv and radio drama and more leadership on the field. If infighting is his thing then he'd be better served elsewhere |

Well, then let's just cut Campbell cause he didn't produce all that much last year. Santana's numbers were down to. He's outta here! Cooley I think his catches and TD's were down. C'ya! Sellers? Why did we re-up this guy? His TD/touch ratio was WAY off from the previous year. What's the cap hit for cutting him? Jansen, clearly lost a step last year. No point in him sticking around. Samuels? Sure he made the pro-bowl - but it was as an alternate. Hit the road bitch. And what about Sean Taylor, man did he have a down year - Better get his ass outta here before he drags the whole secondary down. ... Sure we can disagree about the merits of the original trade, we can dispute the merits of CP's off the field statements, and we can even dispute his overall value to the team in terms of total contributions - but to assert that, because he had A down year, he better shape up is beyond laughable (Oh, BTW, did I mention that the only reason he had a down year is because he got injured !CHASING DOWN AND TACKLING A DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN A PRESEASON GAME!) That was never the orginal arguement, it has nothing to do with Clinton's diminished numbers, it has nothing to do with with his (lol) preseason tackle....the balance scale Clinton Portis is on is tipping out of his favor, and belive that this year is gonna be his most important with us |

First, the word was inane - meaning "lacking sense or substance" and it was used in the contest of your dual assertions that he is not a "tough" back and that his production last year warranted "he better make more yards this year or he is outta here" assertion. Based on his past performance, both those "lack sense or substance". 1500 yards is the mark of an excellent back? Well, CP has only missed that mark twice in his career once b/c he "only" had 1200 yards and once b/c he .... (wait for it) ... got injured !CHASING DOWN AND TACKLING A DEFENSIVE PLAYER IN A PRESEASON GAME! As for his off the field "drama", I would suggest that (1) He loves playing for JG; (2) JG loves CP; (3) CP gets frustrated when the team doesn't do well and will speak his mind as to what he believes is the cause; and (4) nothing said as a result of (3) will change the underlying truth of (1) and (2). Further, other than Lloyd and to a lesser extent Dockery (saying he's a great in-line blocker but don't ask him to pull), I have not heard CP call out any other team-mates. Rather, CP has said he wishes more players would speak up for themselves. According to the radio interview which caused such a stir around here, players come to him and Santana to approach the coaches. You can dispute that he is a team leader b/c he speaks his mind, I would suggest that, b/c he does so and can do so with the knowledge and aquiesence of the coaching staff, other players look to CP as leader on and off the field. |

Re: Mort on the Portis trade rumors
No way we trade Portis.
I am concerned with his health though. He most likely will not see one snap until opening day. Betts really played awesome for us when Portis went down. Besides that fumble that lost us the Rams game, he showed me that Betts can be our # 1 running back if Portis does not excell. We all have to agree that Betts running style is more Joe Gibbs than Portis. Portis has that TD ability every touch though. It will be amazing to see them both have stellar years. I think they can both go for over 1000 rushing yards this upcoming season.........you???? |
Re: Mort on the Portis trade rumors
I keep hearing about 'Joe Gibbs style' running. Might I remind everyone that JG doesn't run the offense anymore. Saunders does. Remember all of our moaning and groaning because AS basically implmented a whole new offense? I would suggest that whether Portis is a 'Joe Gibbs style' back isn't any more relevant than whether Ethan Albright is a 'Joe Gibbs style' WR.

THIS IS STILL A JOE GIBBS STYLE OFFENSE. AS found out the hard way who is really calling the shots when push came to shove last year. We will see Gibbs very involved with this years offense. |

I've listen and read everyone's response to my view on Clinton. I've also considered could his numbers be replaced with another player. He is not a bad back, but we have a history of releasing or trading players who speak out against the machine to much. That doesn't make me insane, stupid or any other name that people can think of for lack of a better way to express themselves. The circumstances when he says he goes to one coach for the running plays, and another for the passing plays, and airs out dirty laundry out to the public is what gets me. Not his toughness, or his numbers and production. These things have to balance out. 2+2=4, i agree, so i haven't fallen into these numbers arguements. If 50% of the backs in this leauge can get 1000-1300 yards in a season then the bar has been raised. So have my expectations... |
