Re: Fred Smoot Update
My take on Smoot when he was here was that he was a Marine. I don't know what happened to him in Minnesota-perhaps the money softened him, but I never saw anything to complain about when he was here. I might be tempted to take a chance on him. His time in Washington couldn't have been as bad as his time up there so maybe he would consider it.
Some will bring up the sex boat, but really, I mean if you can't have group sex with strippers on a boat, what's the point of being a professional athlete? What's the point of going on in this world at all? In a world where there are no maritime orgies or peeing in people's yards, I think the living would envy the dead. |

Re: Fred Smoot Update
For the right price, sure bring him back. I agree w/ 70Chip, when he was here, he gave it his all. I don't think he was a particular favorite of GW so I am guessing he won't be back. Unlike Arrington, I don't think there was a lot of bad blood between him and Skins. Maybe he would be open to coming back. I don't think we just hand him a starting spot. Regardless of his opinion of himself, I think he has to prove he is a number 1 or 2 CB in this league.

Exactly...for the right price, Smoot would love to go ........fill in the blank. That's not a knock on him, just the way it is usually. |

Re: Fred Smoot Update
TAFKAS:
Even though I would be the first to hail the return to Warpath.net of the one and only "Smootsmack", I have to say that I'd rather have Dre Bly in my DB than Freddy. Don't know if the Skins could come up with something the Lions would take in exchange for Bly; but if they could, that would give them a cover corner that they have on the roster ONLY if Springs is 100% healthy. Let's see. Bly or Smoot? If that one gives you pause then you'd probably also pause if given the choice between Antonio Pierce and Brian Urlacher... |
Re: Fred Smoot Update
That's a simple one. No thanks on SMOOT, lost way to many steps...! There's a reason he's ridin the pine...behind a ROOKIE! BLY/URCH
|
Re: Fred Smoot Update
bly is better, but GW seems to ignore CBs unless they're great tacklers. he passed on smoot and andre dyson to draft carlos rogers because of it, so i think clements is the only real target.
|
Re: Fred Smoot Update
I've heard whispers of a possible return to the Skins for Smoot.
We'll have to wait and see. My guess is he's on our list of potential targets, but probably a 3rd option at best depending on what happens with the other top corners. |
Re: Fred Smoot Update
Uh yes we could guarantee him a starting job he is alrady better than carlos rogers who is this close to becoming a bust and springs always hurt and the thought of moving him to safety and with 2 cbs kenny wright and ade jimoh as unrestricted free agents why cant we guarantee him a starting job he should have never left in the first place but JOE GIBBS DIDNT WANT TO PAY HIM MORE THAN SHAWN SPRINGS!!!! even though he is better i dont care whant madden says
|
Re: Fred Smoot Update
Smoot better than Springs?
In what universe? |
Re: Fred Smoot Update
Underverse.
|
Re: Fred Smoot Update
in this universe when he played for the skins he was a force the only reason why springs got 5 interceptions in his first season is cause people didnt want to throw to fred smoot he is more explosive more agile and springs has lost a few steps
|
Re: Fred Smoot Update
I guess the Vikings must be loaded at corner to have such a star like Smoot riding the bench.
|
Re: Fred Smoot Update
He's Not A Star Ne More But Neither Is Shawn Springs Who Cant Stay Healthy The Vikings Are In Dismay Look Who Their Starting Qb Is They Dont Know What They Are Doing

Re: Fred Smoot Update
The Redskins Keep Doing This They Build Up A Player And Then Dont Re-sign Them When Their Contract Is Up Ex: Fred Smoot, Stephen Davis, Lavar Arrington, Champ Bailey, I Am Sick Of This Bs I Am Starting To Worry If This Trend Will Continue When Sean Taylor's Contract Is Up

I'm starting to worry if you'll keep capitalizing every word in every post. Is this something new for message boards to express yelling since all-caps is frowned upon? You're viewpoints seem okay, but the excess capitalization really detracts from the value of your post. |
Re: Fred Smoot Update
ok my bad
|
Re: Fred Smoot Update
I would welcome smoot back. Smoot is not a #1 corner, he is a #2. But with Clements possibly coming here, that leaves no space for smoot as I doubt he would sign not having a starting job. However, if by some chance we are out bid on clements, the smoot may be an option. I love the way smoot played here. He played hurt, was a vocal leader in the locker room. The only problem is, i would not want smoot or rogers covering any teams #1 receiver.

Re: Fred Smoot Update
ok no one is going to outbid the redskins to do anything we all know that and if by some miracle we dont get clements i would rather have asante samuel than fred smoot anyday

So you're in favor of overpaying for a CB, but not a LB? |
Re: Fred Smoot Update
depends on which corner and which linebacker you are talking about and i dont like overpaying anyone but if the guy deserves it

Contrary to popular belief, teams do outbid the Redskins. The Giants outbid us for Pierce and the Vikings for Smoot. Moreover, teams outbid us for other teams' free agents (e.g., the Eagles outbid us for Kearse, who we were reportedly interested in until we found out how much cake he wanted). |
Re: Fred Smoot Update
we didnt get outbided ny pierce of smoot we didnt want to pay smoot as much as springs and pierce as much as washington
|
Re: Fred Smoot Update
The deal the Giants gave Pierce was about even to what the Skins offered him but the the deal breaker was the Giants gave him more up front money in the deal where our deal was backloaded.

Re: Fred Smoot Update
if you say so man that is not what joe gibbs daid on espn

Re: Fred Smoot Update
Pierce, the cerebral leader and top tackler in the third-ranked defense in the league last year, was poised to sign a six-year, $26 million contract, including a $6.5 million signing bonus, with the Giants. Pierce had said all along that he wanted to stay in Washington, but he also said he expected the type of payday that the Redskins have thrown at incoming players over the years.
The Redskins, however, are limited because of their spending splurges of recent seasons, including the $49.6 million they spent in bonuses to six new players over a four-day period a year ago. In the end, that made Pierce's asking price too high. The team also noted that his deal with the Giants turned out to be better than the six-year, $24 million contract the Redskins gave linebacker Marcus Washington last year. Washington went on to make the Pro Bowl, while Pierce was a second alternate. "We thought it was very important to have a salary structure here that makes sense for all our players," Gibbs said. "We went as far as we could go, I felt like."
NFL.com - Washington Redskins Team News |
Re: Fred Smoot Update
So maybe we ARE starting to back down on contracts bit by bit...
|
Re: Fred Smoot Update
More on Pierce's deal vs. what we offered him:
Although coach Joe Gibbs said the Redskins couldn't meet Pierce's contract demands, a club source said Washington matched almost all of the Giants' six-year, $26 million deal, including a $6.5 million signing bonus, but offered less during the first two years.
Marshall tabbed to replace Pierce - Redskins Extra - The Washington Times: Sports - March 04, 2005 |
Re: Fred Smoot Update
uh, we did get outbid, gibbs tried to lowball pierce into giving the skins a home town discount after the giants made their offer, and pierce (understandably) got pretty pissed off. saying smoot is better than springs is completely laughable..
|
The deal the Giants gave Pierce was about even to what the Skins offered him but the the deal breaker was the Giants gave him more up front money in the deal where our deal was backloaded.
True, but the difference between a front-loaded deal and a back-loaded deal is usually pretty significant. Backloaded deals contain a lot of fictitious money that the player is never going to see, whereas frontloaded deals do not. So, in my mind, the G-men outbid us for Pierce. On a somewhat related note, I've been reading Giants fan board and they seem to be critical of Pierce. I don't have the slightest clue why, but they aren't as glowing of Pierce as I would have expected. Maybe that's a function of the entire defense's level of performance. |
