Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
That deal sucks for us. They'd need to sweeten it. They're the ones trying to unload a player, I would do that deal if they dropped another decent pick in.
|
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
Man this trade rumor needs some serious work. I'm in the camp of it isn't a good deal for us. The number six pick can be a great great player. No guarantees, but I hate this trade as is. Oh and I gotta give TEN AND SIX some props! Your post lasted almost an entire page. Congrats. I've never seen that before.

Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
Honestly, i also think we are on the short end of the trade if we have to drop from pick #6 all the way to #25.
However if the deal became: Redskins give up Betts and #6 overall Jetts give up Vilma, #25 and their 2nd rounder. Then i would prolly be inclined to go for it. If it was jets give up vilma, #25 and their 3rd rounder...i would still think about it. |
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
Were losing a little here...Vilma is way more valuable than Betts...but the gap is even wider from the 6th pick down to 25th. They need to kick in another day 1 draft pick and then it's fair.
Anyone who thinks Betts is untradeable does not understand the NFL...RB's are a dime a dozen.
I think most people understand anyone is replaceable in this leaque. But you certainly don't have to look to far around the league and clearly see QUALITY RB/TB aren't DIME A DOZEN! Futhermore, you MUST have at least ONE. With TJ more than likely gone, and used up. CP status not real clear? There's a chance LB is our #1 back with Rock as #2. They signed a solid back in LB to a 5 year deal for a GREAT reason we need him, and Joe Gibbs football is pound the rock first. If CP was 100% there might be an ounce of thruth to this thread. |
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
ASSUMING the deal on the table is Betts and the #6 pick for Vilma and the #25 pick this year: I'd take that deal in a flash!!
If Portis is healthy - and there's no reason to assume he will not be - Betts is the "back-up". That's the reality whether or not you want to believe it's "the right thing" in the grand scheme of the universe. Vilma would be the starting MLB on this team even with a broken arm; that's how much better he is at MLB (in a 4-3) or at ILB (in a 3-4) than anyone else on the roster. Yes, I said ANYONE else on the roster. And so, in order to acquire a lead-pipe cinch starting MLB, if what I had to give up was a back-up RB and a switch of first round picks, you bet I'd take that deal in a NY minute. And that's why I don't think it's gonna happen that way - - unless [hold your breath, folks] the Redskins sweeten the deal... |
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
yes ST and JV reunite.
muhahaha muhahaha |
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
I guess you're assuming we would re-sign TJ before dealing him, because he's currently set to become a FA.
one of those sign and trade deals. i don't think this is gonna happen, nor do i think betts will be traded. i just think if having to choose between betts and duckett, then i'd rather the skins keep betts. |
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
The team's running back situation is in no position to consider trading anyone. I'm convinced today's NFL requires at least two quality running backs. Sixteen games at 25-30 carries a game is too much for one back, and last season was proof positive of the need. Cartwright is not the guy I would want to step in in the event Portis or Betts goes down, and it's not likely we could trade Duckett because he's about to enter FA. With the backs we have it dosen't make sense to trade one just to go look for a replacement.
I respectfully disagree. I know the two-back system is en vogue now because of teams like Indy and Chicago, but I don't think it's necessarily the answer for most teams. A lot of running backs don't produce when they get 10 carries a game. Betts himself said that it normally takes him about 15 snaps to get into a rhythm. Ladell Betts was not "Ladell Betts" until Portis went on IR - in fact he was in danger of getting cut two seasons ago. Moreover, while I would love to have a backup running back who can step in and play like a Pro Bowler, you rarely get to eat your cake and eat it too. We have so many holes at other positions that I would welcome the opportunity to get a Pro Bowl defensive player (e.g., Vilma) in exchange for our backup RB. Unless Betts can play defense or Portis isn't expected to recover fully from his injuries, trading him would be a smart move. |
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
It would be a crime if Betts were traded. He remains loyal after a career season, and then we give him the shaft.
That said, we would have to trade him if we had "an offer we couldn't refuse". But, Vilma and 1st round swaps is definitely a deal to refuse. I also think that RBs are relatively easy to come by, and it doesn't make sense to keep a backup when you can get a starter to fill a need. A 2nd or 3rd round pick could produce a back with more talent than Betts. Let's not forget, CP was a 2nd rounder. If there are other teams interested in Betts, then that is how we could get the best value. Also, we MUST keep our #6 pick, unless we can trade it down for more picks -- not players (that is how we got lost our picks to begin with). So, if we can get Vilma for Betts without losing our #6 pick, then we'd be stupid not to. |
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
RBs and LBs are easy to get in the 2nd round, but that's a really steep drop for trading replaceable positions. vilma is the better player, but he's not urlacher or ray lewis (in his prime).
you're also trading alan branch for whoever is left at 25, who won't be nearly as good in all likelyhood. |
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
Vilma is still young and one of the best. I make this trade all day long.

But swapping a backup RB and say a 2nd rounder next year for a starting, Pro Bowl MLB sounds like a good deal. As much as I love Betts, I guess I still haven't totally forgiven him for numerous injury-plagued seasons and his fumbles at critical moments in games last season. |

Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
This is all I am saying...
1) Trade Betts while his value is high. We need to shop him now while his value is still high, and before everyone else finds out that he has a pnechant for fumbling. We could Easily get a 3nd rounder, and, if the climate is right around draft time, we could potentially work out a deal for a 2nd rounder. 2) Get a corner/fs somewhere in the draft. We tanked on getting a corner last year when we passed on Jimmy Williams to get Rocky McIntosh. So we desperately need to address that position via the draft, and NOT free agency. We keep signing these guys who seem to lose the will to work after they sign the big contracts. 3) The story is 100% non-fabricated. I was there, and so was George Michael. I could have used a host of scenarios to make the story sound sweeter, but I told it as it was. Truthful. And don't ever question the man who runs the Sports Machine and Redskins Report! He is the De Facto sports information icon of anything Burgundy and Gold since 1984. 4) I don't think that we should take the Jets deal at all. The story was merely a way to show the potential value of LBetts as trade material in the "real world" of NFL GM cirlces. This is only ONE example of many RB hungry teams that could be salivating at a RB that has been a backup to start for them. Who knows his value may go up around draft time. But, we need to use that 6th pick on the best DE available, or trade down to acquire more picks. Which bring me to my 5th point... 5) We need more picks and bad! I dont think anyone realzies that we have 1 pick in the entire first day of the draft. So, if we dont get anymore picks, then we will have to go home or turn on the ps3 after the sixth pick in the first day. If not, you will be forced to watch and think about how a "Jonnie Doe" would have done for us in the rounds 2-4, where we gave up draft picks for players. 6) We need to abandon this philosophy of trading draft picks for players! Its the reason we didnt have a first and 3rd last year, and its the reason why we dont have a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th this year. It never works, either way we have a high cap hit and a player who never really lives up to expectation. The inverse is needed to stop the bleeding. So trade players for draft picks. Its so crazy it just might work. 7) Stay with the system. Every year teams like the Patriots, Ravens, and Chargers get better and deeper as a team thru the draft. We don't grow simply, because we don't draft. 8) Cut Brunell, Wynn, restructure Archuleta's contract(or restructure and trade him to Chicago to reunite with Lovie SMith), keep Shawn Springs, and maybe get a corner after the draft when teams release players to sign draft picks. Im not sold on clements or any other free agent CB. 9) Lastly, we need to go with the best end in the 1st round. I would say take a corner here, but none are worthy of being taken this high in this draft class. Trade for a 2nd or 3rd rounder to get the best CB/FS available. A plus would be to get someone who could play both (like Jimmy Williams...no, I wont stop bringing it up). In the 5th, 6th, and 7th go after DT, LB, RB(if we trade BEtts), DE(pass rush specialist-a la Mark Anderson of the Bears if we don't trade betts), and WR(if we could find a Marques Colston, Donald Driver, or Mike Furrey steal in the late round could help make WR more competitive behind Moss). Plus we need a receiver over 6' tall!! Im 6'2", do u think I can get a try out? lol Seriously, if we dont make moves we will have essentially the same team depth wise as last year. I dont want to have one draft pick for the first day, so make moves and build the team for the real test - who will run things when Gibbs is gone? Its 2 years away, we need to look forward to building an inexpensive, productive, proactive base of talent for when he is gone. So that we dont end up at square one again. |

Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
With our Six pick here are three DL candidates from ESPN insider to consider:
Gaines Adams Scouts Grade: 98 DE | (6'4", 261, 4.7) | CLEMSON Strengths: Possesses adequate-to-good height and only decent bulk -- but room on his frame to get bigger. Very agile for the position. Displays explosive first-step quickness and good top-end speed as an edge rusher. Displays very good instincts and awareness as a pass rusher. Has long arms, times his jumps well and does a great job of batting down passes at the line of scrimmage. He also has shown good fluidity when occasionally asked to drop in coverage on zone blitzes. He has improved his discipline and technique versus the run. Does a fine job of sealing off the backside. He gets upfield quickly and can be disruptive in the backfield versus the run. Also shows very good change-of-direction skills in space, which allows him to redirect and pursue as a run defender. He is a hard worker with solid all-around intangibles. Weaknesses: Lacks ideal bulk and lower-body strength. He will need to improve his size in order to consistently take on NFL blockers. He absorbs too many blocks and doesn't do a consistent enough job of disengaging once reached. Needs to play with more consistent leverage versus the run. Has a tendency to come out of his stance too high and will allow linemen to get into his pads too frequently. He needs to become more consistent as a tackler. He will overextend at times and gets caught lunging or leaving his feet too frequently. Overall: Adams was redshirted in 2002. He saw action in 12 games as a backup defensive end for the 2003 season, registering 15 total tackles, four tackles for loss, and one sack. Adams played in all 11 contests with just one start (Texas A&M) in 2004 but did win Clemson's defensive 12th man award after recording 35 total tackles, eight tackles for loss, five sacks, and two blocked punts. In 2005, he took over as the starting "bandit" DE and made 56 total tackles, 15 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, 29 quarterback pressures, and three forced fumbles. Adams started all 13 games during the 2006 season, finishing with 62 total tackles, 17.5 tackles for loss, 12.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, and three fumble recoveries. Adams made a wise decision to bypass the 2006 NFL Draft and return for his senior season. He played eight-man football in high school, so he needed the extra time in college to mature both physically and as a player. He still needs to get bigger and do a better job of defending the run, but he has the frame to add at least 15 more pounds and he made noticeable strides in his run-stopping technique during his final season at Clemson. Adams should eventually become a playmaking starter as a 4-3 end in the NFL -- and he also displays enough athletic ability to fit as a 3-4 outside linebacker. Regardless, Adams grades out as the premier defensive end prospect in the 2007 class and he should come off the board within the top-10 picks. Jamaal Anderson Scouts Grade: 96 DE | (6'5", 273, 4.75) | ARKANSAS Strengths: Possesses outstanding size. Is tall with great weight distribution, long arms and big hands. Displays good lower-body strength and upper-body power. Is able to jar offensive linemen with initial punch. Is smooth and fluid for his size. Possesses adequate speed and is able to change directions quickly for a big defensive end. He displays good combination moves of power and finesse as a pass rusher. Plays with a high motor and is relentless as a pass rusher. He has enough size and strength to effectively hold his ground when teams run at him, so long as he plays with good leverage. He pursues hard from the backside in run-support and he is a powerful tackler. Weaknesses: Lacks elite top-end speed and will struggle to turn the corner as quickly when rushing the passer off the edge. He does not possess great first-step quickness, either. Fires out of his stance too high and must learn to play with better leverage. Needs to do a better job of using his hands to get off blocks. He will struggle to disengage quickly enough versus the run. Limited experience; he was only a starter for a year and a half at Arkansas before leaving early. Overall: Anderson saw action in all 11 games in 2004 as a true freshman off the bench and on special teams recording 18 total tackles, two tackles for loss, and one blocked punt. In 2005, he once again played in all 11 games but received five starts to end the year after Anthony Brown was injured and registered 47 total tackles including 10.5 for loss, 5.5 sacks, and two forced fumbles. Anderson then started all 14 games during the 2006 season amassing 65 total tackles, 19.5 tackles for loss, 13.5 sacks, and one forced fumble gaining First Team All-SEC recognition. Anderson is making the NFL plunge a year early after experiencing a breakout season as a junior in 2006. The good news and bad news with Anderson is that he's still relatively raw. While he may not be ready to contribute as an every-down player as a rookie, he displays the physical tools to develop into an upper-echelon starter if he continues to work at the next level. Anderson should be one of the top three or four defensive ends selected -- most likely in the mid-to-late first-round range. Alan Branch DT | (6'5", 328, 5.23) | MICHIGAN Scouts Grade: 97 Strengths: A massive two-gap interior defender with excellent height, bulk and strength. He possesses a massive frame and is able to occupy two blockers in the run game. He shows good initial quickness for his size and typically does a solid job of playing with leverage for such a tall guy. He shows good balance and body control for his size. He gives a great effort on most plays and shows better than average stamina for his massive frame. He can take over a game when he's fresh and gets his motor running. He is more of a two-gap fit, but he often will disrupt plays in the backfield by using his quickness, size and strength to penetrate. He is a powerful tackler with impressive wrap-up skills for his size. He displays the ability to collapse the pocket with a powerful bull rush. He's versatile and has experience playing NT, DT and DE in three-and-four man fronts. Weaknesses: Lacks ideal explosiveness. He's quick for his size but lacks the speed and closing burst to consistently make an impact as a pass rusher in the NFL. He's mostly a one-dimensional bull rusher type. He needs to improve his arsenal of pass-rush moves. He has room to improve in terms of using his hands to play off of blocks. Durability is only a minor concern after missing two games due to a knee injury in 2005. Overall: Branch appeared in all 12 games as a true freshman in 2004 seeing time at defensive tackle, defensive end, and on special teams registering five total tackles, two tackles for loss, and two sacks. In 2005, he played in all 12 games starting the final 10 contests and recorded 31 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, five sacks, one fumble recovery, and one forced fumble, again seeing action at both defensive tackle and end. Branch settled into a starting spot at defensive tackle for all 13 games in 2006 and finished the season with 25 total tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, one interception, three fumble recoveries, and two forced fumbles earning First Team All-Big Ten accolades. Branch is an all-around gifted defensive tackle prospect with an outstanding combination of size, power and quickness. He has experienced playing end in a 3-4, the three-technique in a 4-3, and nose tackle in both alignments. Regardless of where he lines up, Branch fits best in a two-gap scheme. In our opinion, Branch is the most complete all-around interior defensive lineman in the 2007 class and he should be a top-10 pick. |

Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
This team really is run like a Madden franchise. I don't oppose trading Betts in priniciple, but moving from 6 to 25 is too significant a drop, even for a player of Vilma's caliber.

Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
As much as I like Vilma who would be perfect for Williams system, it is very tough for us to swap picks, I would love to send Portis for Vilma but as Michaels said we are married to him, and as he said you do not give huge contracts to backs because they can be had, but we haven't figured that out yet, just like we couldn't figure out that every back who takes the field in Denver becomes a household name, until he leaves.
The best way to go about a possible deal like this is to trade down a couple of times and obtain a couple of 2nd round picks with teams picking higher than the Jets, then maybe make the swap and have the Jets throw in a second day pick, but that would require savey which is something we don't have and every team knows it, so right now it's tough to get favorable deal done because teams will wait us out knowing we will give up the farm in a deal when the shoe should be on the other foot. Every GM in the league knows GM Joe is out to prove he has a keen eye for talent, so much so that he see's things in players that knowbody else see's and is willing to pay an astronomical price for his keen insight on talent when knowbody else is willing. So now we are stuck between a rock and a hard place, do we trade down and address more needs? Or do we use our only valued pick to get a bonified D-lineman which will not be available if we choose to trade down? It would be a nice year to have all our picks or possibly a few extra, we could really load up, but we had to have Lloyd who is not better than the top 3 WR's coming out, we have Portis who is not better than the top back coming out, we had to have Duckett and who know's what his value is, it was zero for us, and yes we had to give up another pick for a LB who barely saw the field but we just had to have him, [although what I saw of him I liked] but we did once again overpay for another player. In closing I have no real expectations that we will do anything productive in the offseason, stupid is as stupid does, and so long as the current staff is in place that's how it will remain in the personel department! |
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested?!(from a primary source)
jimmy williams? he didn't exactly shut anyone down. the guy we should have taken was richard marshall (NFL.com - Richard Marshall).
he was there for our #53 pick, he had a great year, and he's the guy i wanted for value at that spot well beforehand too. hell, he picked campbell off twice in the one game he played against the skins this year (even though one got overturned due to a BS roughing call, but i can't complain about that). |

Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested? (rumor)
The main problem with this deal as it is outlined is dropping down to #25 is too far of a drop and using the NFL points chart it doesn't add up. The Jets would definitely have to sweeten the deal a bit more.
|
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested? (rumor)
After reading the rest of the posts, I'm genuinely surprised at the number of people who would accept this deal.
Betts for a 2nd or a 3rd is fine. Betts straight up for Vilma is fine. But losing the #6 pick? NO WAY. That pick is gold. |
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested? (rumor)
I would take the deal if the Jets sweetened the deal with another quality pick.
|
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested? (rumor)
Unless we think that we can get another solid DT or DE with a later pick in the first round, or with a high second round pick, I really think we need to keep the 6th pick to address the DL.
If we get a solid defensive lineman, then I think whoever is playing linebacker will be better. In fact, I still believe that Lemar Marshall can produce for us if his shoulder injury isn't nagging him all season. He had a good season for us in 2005, and I believe he can return to that form next season, especially if we can get a guy like Branch to clog up some holes. In addition, although Vilma is attractive, I do not think we should go after him for the reasons I just stated. However, I also do not think that we should go after him because we're getting rid of a guy who WANTS to be a Redskin. Ladell knew that he could leave the Skins and go start for another team, but he is choosing to stay with us. He's passing up a big pay day for back up money, cause he wants to be a part of this team. After the season that he had last year, I think trading him will cause more friction between the front office/coaching staff and the players. Portis always speaks so highly of Betts, and while Vilma is a stud, I think it's more important that we start showing the rest of the team that we're willing to take care of our own, and award them when they play well. |
hmmm. Im kind of in the RB and LB are a dime a dozen camp unless they are unreal beasts aka, Tomlinson, Urlacher, Lewis. The best thing about Betts aside from his ability is the fact that his agent is a complete moron and got him locked into a team friendly deal right before he could have seen a huge payday. He really does solidify the RB position at back up money for years to come. You would have to pay a player like Vilma a ton. Moreover, I am starting to think that the biggest problem we have been having with the big contracts is actually the ego/motivation impact they seem to have on the team. Given that we are impervious to salary cap hell, but tend to stink on gameday, I think compiling more players with Betts like skill and salary could be a blueprint for success. We could use more solid if unspectacular players, at a resonable and more importantly ego dampening price. You pay the big bucks ONLY to the team leaders and the superathletes who are the CORE of the team. Overpay for those guys if you have to. The other guys look up to them and respect them, but know their place on the team. If they want too much, they are replaced. Because of the fact that there seems to be no method to our compensation packages, (coaches included), it seems to affect the chain of command of the entire organization. Who is in charge? Who do I HAVE to listen to. Who are THE core players? Who is the REAL head coach. Honestly, come to think of it, I think that the main reason we were all so excited when Joe Gibbs came back was because we imagined that he would bring a very clear sense of leadership and direction to the team. It may well be that his major failing has been in this regard since his return. With JG, GW and Al Saunders, we are dealing with a three headed monster in terms of leadership and direction. That seems to flow down to the players and is compounded by the overspending. The core players should get the money, and the team should scheme around there particular strengths. On the same token, the coaching staff should have a clear outline of who is in charge. It is one thing to say Joe Gibbs is in charge, another thing entirely to know he is. I think that Joe hopefully already has this figured out. It seems that he took control of the team late last season by reaserting his coaching philosophy that we would be a running, smashmouth football team. Unfortunately, it was already too late to save the season. However, I believe that both GW and Saunders got put back in there place and now the team might have a clear understanding of what they are expected to be: a Joe Gibbs football team.
With that in mind, Betts is a more than servicable starter and a very strong role player/backup with a good contract who fits the mold of a power running team. That much we know. Is Vilma one of THE two or three guys you plan to build your entire defense around? A trade like that is only worth it if your answer is yes, because you will have to pay him like a top two or three defender. The same goes for the number six pick. Is the player we draft there going to be one of those two or three guys that makes huge money and is a cornerstone of the franchise? To me, if none of those defenders fits that mold, you either trade down in hopes of landing more solid Betts type players which every good team needs, or you use the pick as leverage to get a guy like Vilma or whoever else you have decided to build around.
Betts wanted to be here, thats why HE agreed to the deal. |

I also wouldn't be surprised if he re-signed with a handshake agreement that the team would still consider offers for him if it meant a shot at a starting job. |
*yeah your right, no other gm's or head coaches would do a little research or film review before making an offer on a player. * huh? *This is The Warpath, Redskins discussion for the Knowledgeable Fan. * we have a few who have.
Any trade involving Betts will never happen. Maybe Georgey boy had just finished his first bottle of scotch and was just yanking your chain. |
Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested? (rumor)
I can see this trade occuring if we also get our original 2nd rounder back

Re: Draft Day Trades: Jets Interested? (rumor)
Unless we think that we can get another solid DT or DE with a later pick in the first round, or with a high second round pick, I really think we need to keep the 6th pick to address the DL.
If we get a solid defensive lineman, then I think whoever is playing linebacker will be better. In fact, I still believe that Lemar Marshall can produce for us if his shoulder injury isn't nagging him all season. He had a good season for us in 2005, and I believe he can return to that form next season, especially if we can get a guy like Branch to clog up some holes. As much as I like Vilma, the DL is more important, and to upgrade it, we really need a top 12 pick. |
