He could be re-signed AFTER the draft too. I don't see what the big deal is. I haven't heard anything about other teams that are interested in him, so why don't we just chill and let the Skins do what they gotta do?

I am all for resigning Dock and I think team chemistry is important - but he doesn't deserve to be the highest paid lineman in the NFL. Hell he's not even the best lineman on his own team.

he's not nearly a good as thomas. he can't pull at all. it's taking so long because dock's already said he's going to test the market, and the "market" hasn't opened yet.

I can't help but to think that we're not going to get this deal done, time is ticking, and if we can't get Dock re-signed it is going to have a huge impact on what we do this offseason.....yet another hole to fill.

And then we are going to blow tons of money on some random Olineman. Give them one of those contracts with insane bonuses and low yearly salaries.

The Cards just let Leonard Davis walk. He's a little on the heavy side, and never reached his potential. But perhaps a fresh new start will help him. He would probably come cheap too.

I see one of two things happening with Dockery:

1) Dockery talks to a few teams at the combine, makes a wink, wink, nod, nod deal for some serious cash, and signs somewhere else on the first day or two of UFA.

2) Dockery talks to a few teams at the combine, realizes that there is no real market for him, turns around and signs with the Redskins about this time next week.

No chance he's around (on the open market) at the draft.

If the Redskins' FO/Coaching Staff make Dockery the highest paid offensive lineman in the NFL, they should all be checked into a rehab center because they are doing some very high quality stuff...

He's not the best offensive guard let alone lineman on the Redskins' team - let alone in the NFC East and etc. etc.

I can't believe his agent is that delusional either.

As of this moment, Dockery is not in danger of being sent away. As I pointed out in one of the other threads, the Redskins have a pattern when they are about to release or let go one of their starters. They begin to "trash" him in the local papers and on the local sports radio outlets - - and since Danny Boy onwns one of the local sports radio outlets, that makes it all the easier. I have not yet heard that Dockery is "difficult to coach" or "an outsider in the locker room" or "unwilling to work as hard as he can" or "has the most offensive body odor north of the equator". Absent that kind of "inside scoop" from Redskins' Park, I don't think they've given up on getting Dockery back here next year.

But I want to pose a cautionary note here for those who think that Dockery is some kind of lynch-pin for the entire team. He's been here 4 years and has played in every game for all of those 4 years. For the first 3 years he was fat and slow; he was toting around at least 30 lbs of extra fat - - and that's being kind.

Then he trimmed about 50 lbs of fat and added a lot of of muscle last year and his performance was hugely improved.

Now, did he do that because he "saw the light" and realized what he needed to do to survive in the NFL - - or did he do that because it was his contract year?

I don't know the answer to that because I don't read minds. But the answer to that question is VERY important when it comes to deciding just how much you want to pay him and how long a contract you want to sign him to.

Highest paid lineman ???? I didn't laugh that hard at Richard Pryor Live in Concert, and I'm still laughing from the first time I saw it and that was YEARS ago ! I've still got about 100 or so more times watched to laugh at. I like Dock and all and I would like for him to stay but not for the highest paid deal. He's no Steve Hutchinson, he's not better than Randy Thomas IMO. Id give him a deal around or SLIGHTLY better than Thomas'.

I would definately like to see Dockery re-signed because: (1) he [I]should not[/I] be terribly expensive; (2) it would be nice to have some continuity on the O-line; (3) it would be nice to show that the perception that the front office doesn't reward its own guys is not totally accurate; and (4) he's a good starter, particularly in a run-first offense.

That said, Dockery may be good, but he's also the weakest link on the O-line. Whenever someone is flagged for holding or, particularly, for a false start, Dockery's number is called 1/2 the time.

Moreover, he's not nearly as strong as his size would indicate. For example, in the 2nd Dallas game last year, MLB Bradie James actually stopped Dockery cold on a running play and tackled Portis near the goal line despite being about 100 pounds lighter. I'm not judging Dockery based solely on that play, but I've seen a number of instances in which Dockery isn't [I]as[/I] dominant in run-blocking as you would think he would be by simply looking at him.

Hopefully a good deal will get worked out that gives Dockery his due without overpaying him.

The problem with re-signing Dock for what he's really worth is that he's gonna want MORE than he's really worth. Based on the Redskins track record of massive contracts for average players, who can blame him? Hopefully when the market opens he'll see that he isn't worth Steve Hutchinson/Orlando Pace type money, and will stick with the team he has grown comfortable with. I also wonder how long Redskins players will agree to restructure contracts for the benefit of other people's wallets- are there any good players who HAVEN'T restructured for us in the past few years? (Sarcasm)

Theres plenty of starting caliber Guards every year who slip under the radar. Pucillo might be one, but there are probably a few more in FA.

I'd worry about how the rest of the team would feel if the FO can't get Dock to sign a new deal more than finding someone to take his place. Players have come out and publically said they want him back and if he leaves I'm afraid they might just say to themselves "there goes another guy that worked is butt off for the team with nothing to show for it" and not try as hard.

But at the same time if he's asking for the world I'm sure players would understand the team's position. Sure Samuels and others want him back, but do they want him coming back as the highest paid lineman on the team? I think not.

Personally I'm not very concerned, he's just not going to command a top-flight lineman type of contact on the open market. If he wants to test the waters fine, go right ahead. Once he feels the lukewarm reception out there we'll have him right where we want him and he'll re-sign for a reasonable deal.

Great point. And it comes from the Skins awful habit of paying huge $$ for FA's who performed for other teams, and not even blinking at waving bye-bye to FA's who performed for us. Of course, if Dockery demands more than we can afford then it won't leave us much of a choice.

As you say GM, we have paid to much for some FA's in the past. We can't continue to set and further reinforce that precedent. It completely kills our ability to deal with the other guys as their contracts come up. It also serves to undermine the attitude of the entire team if somebody gets far more that they are worth.

Yeah, Wade does play tall from what little I've seen. You could always slide Pucillo over to guard. Fortunately Rabach is durable enough to give us that option. Also, this Taylor Whitley was a regular starter for the 'Phins in '04. And that Whitticker kid from Michigan started 14 games for the Packers in '05 and he is young. The roster review for Centers/Guards in on Redskins.com today too....

My only concern is that the abundance of (if not record-setting amount of) cap space around the league and the dearth of quality free agents will cause FA price tags to skyrocket as teams compete for the few guys who hit the market. I wouldn't be surprised to see a lot of free agents overpaid this offseason.

Actually this brings me back to a point I've been on for quite awhile now: We need a blocking-style TE bad. A guy who blocks like a lineman but can catch a pass every now and then also. Pucillo was fine, but theres only so many different plays you can call with him in the game at TE. Not to mention theres a chance he will be starting at G next year.

I agree, Dock is no star, maybe someone ponies up and overpay's but how about letting someone else blow their cap up for average talent besides us.

Personally I wouldn't give him any significant money, as far as I am concerned the biggest asset he has is his ability to stay healthy other than that I am not impressed.

That seems fair to me. It's all because of this damn history of overpaying is why he's expecting a big payday. Samuels got one, so he's expecting his.

This is going to come down to the Smoot, Pierce issue... if you're a TRUE Redskin and you like where you're playing, what's a few million dollars?
