Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
I think in retro the decision on Pierce and Clark can be seen as mistakes. The decision on Smoot cannot be seen as a mistake though. He wanted more than he was worth and the Vikings have seen that. He can come back here hopefully for a fair deal and we can get value on it.

HA. Pissed.
Nice wordplay TAF! And no, Toomer was too busy filming a new music video with R. Kelly. |

He was busy not banging his wife. |

Seriously, the boat incident wasn't THAT bad. If you read the Maxim article about a year ago, it's basically an expensive version of ANYONE'S typical visit to a strip club/whore house.
I know that when I go "pleasure" boating, I make sure to have a boatload of strippers and get oral sex in front of a bunch of people. |
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
If you guys read the La Conforna article on another post, since clements is too high priced it will probably will be smoot or Bly. I'd welcome them both. I think there is a great possibility that we'll see Smoot running his mouth on our local news once again. It will be good. I hope he really hasn't fallen off that much and can regain the level he played at in 04.

Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
Our needs shouldn't up the price. The market will set it. They have no leverage to charge us more than whatever anyone else will pay regardless of our needs. If they base their decision on our needs they would be doing it just to be jerks. Basically they'd be saying..."I'll take less to sign somewhere else because we want you to overpay for us."
Our needs are part of what determines the market, in short how much do we 'need' him. They'll certainly try to get us to overpay & why not? we've shown little restraint in the past, plus Smoot may feel he's entitled to more here. On skins insider someone said that Tenn. is looking at signing smoot & that makes sense w/pacman's problems. As was pointed out, Tenn. is closer to Miss. my point is smoot will have options so his agents will be able to up the price cause it's a slim market. Same thing w/Springs, there might be some good $ out there if he tests the waters. |

I have to ask what has he done or said that would make you think that he has grown up a lot since the incident? Or is that why you started with I Think? |
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
I am much more concerned about his level of play than his naval escapades. He hasn't preformed well (except on the boat) in MN. Hopefully, we won't break the bank here...
(For all that, I loved Smoot when he was here...) |

And get ready for all of the interviews with Fred Smoot referring to Fred Smoot in the third person. |
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
I'd take him back. He isn't a good corner. he really never was. He had a good year opposite Shawn springs in a defense that was so good and stopping yards, it was hard for a CB to f... up too much as long as they were above average.

Why would you take him back if you think he isn't good? I think he was a good cover corner, but couldn't tackle. With ST in the picture now, he wouldn't be called on to make as many tackles. I would be happy to have him back. |

Smoot is a DECENT coverage corner and I will be glad to get him back at the right price. My only concerns about him are (1) he's willing to try to stop the run, but it seems like he gets injured every time he makes a tackle on a RB and (2) he's not exactly the most effective blitzer. In most systems, such concerns wouldn't be that big of a deal, but GW asks his corners to do an awful lot. |
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
He has above average cover skills and can shut down most #2s in the league. He is way better than either RUmph or Wright and I think he is better than Harris. Even Harris is San Fran simply was a guy in the right place at the right time for the most part. Smooty should be welcomed back.

I agree but at this point we need to wrry about actually covering WRs rather blitzing CBs. I know it is all part of the scheme but look at what our 'blitzing corners' did for us last year. Let's get some guys who can cover and then worry about the blitz packages. |

Good point. I definately noticed that we didn't see as many corner blitzes last year because our coverage was generally so bad. |

This defense used to be the shit. We would blitz from everywhere and stop the run while covering everyone down field. I won't mind if he doesn't blitz though, as long as he can somehow help sean taylor in the back field, I'll be happy. I feel the same way about smoot as I do about clark. They both are pretty good but they aren't going to make the pro bowl. They just fit our system. Smoot should have never left. Maybe I'm just hoping bringing back smoot will be a step in making this a GW defense again. |
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
I always liked Fred Smoot. I would love to see him back in the burgundy and gold.
|
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
I think it's pretty safe to say Clements isn't coming here -- not for what we'd be able to offer him.
Unless Smoot and Rogers suck out loud, worse than anyone could possibly imagine, we should be fine with them if we hit the jackpot on a dynamite defensive lineman with the #6 pick. |
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
I personally think it's exciting getting Fred Smoot back here. It's very interesting that he never burned any bridges here.
|
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
Why is Smoot even available, is it his play (or lack thereof) or is it his partying? Smoot, like Clark loss their starting positions for the teams they left for, there must be a serious reason why the Vikings are releasing him. It does not appear we will land Nate Clements, but it does appear desperation has set in. "God forgive me for my sins"
|
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
Maybe he wasn't worth what they were paying him but would be worth a shorter cheaper deal. He was being paid as a #1 there and wasn't a #1.
|
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
are our corners that bad that everyone wants smoot, or whomever is available to come here? i already know the answer to that question. the only reason i would want smooty back, is for the nickle, and a bargain basement price

Just wondering how much his play has declined since he lost his job in Minnesota. I remember when he was here there were certain patterns he had trouble covering. Outside the hashes he was adaquate, but down and in's gave him a world of trouble. There were also questions about him being physical enough, and staying healthy in the process. |

If he comes back, he will be starting. He already stated he is no one's nickel. |
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
the only things i remember of smoot are him talking in third person and his only interceptions i can think of were mostly off tipped balls not good coverage

did he officially get released where is the link?

Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
Rogers. Springs at safety I would guess or at nickel.
|
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
Yeah maybe Springs becomes our nickle/safety guy. IE the safety on running downs and the nickle guy on passing downs ala Prioleau did in '05.
|
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
Is Nick Harper still available?

i don't understand the reasoning behind taking your best corner and making him a safety. are we in agreement that springs is a better corner then rogers? |
Re: Per NFL Network: Smoot Officially Released
For real it would be stupid for us not to pick him back up.
|
For real it would be stupid for us not to pick him back up.
It'll be like the prodigal son returning and we can get him for much cheaper than we would have had to pay to keep him. I'd welcome him with open arms cuz he has probably learned alot from the whole Vikings experience. What with underperforming as well as the whole boat incident I'd be he is a lot more mature. Somebody earlier mentioned its like what happened to Trotter with the Eagles. He tested FA, and got paid for a year then when he didn't perform he went back to the eagles at a much lower price. |

Oh yeah. I am not saying that is my idea but it has been floated around. Ideally though if we are going to switch a guy to safety it would probably be Springs. I think you get better value by doing that(because of age) rather than say Rogers. It'd be better to let Rogers develop and stay at corber(a more coveted position) and let Springs out to pasture at safety I guess. |
