Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
ok, apparently nobody agrees with my view on fred smoot and how i think he is a penalty machine. however, why are we still shopping for corners? why are there rumors of us getting rid of springs? is carlos rogers a #2? im sorry fellas, but im not a big fan of bringing players back after we have already gotten rid of them. i dont care what gibbs has said about him. ive seen him play. we obviously will see what happens when the season starts. but dont sit there and tell me (as some of you have) that he will be fine with being a #3. if thats the case expect a little bit of bitching on his side and rightly so.
if you guys are right and he shines then so be it. my comment came out of disgust that we havent done shit with the D-line yet. ive seen kerney go places and other free agents and im a little pissed we havent fixed anything with the D-line which imo is our weakest point. go ahead and ban my ass if smoot leads the team in picks, it wont happen. i would rather have made moves on the D-line first. |

Depth. Smoot is a solid #2 corner and Rogers hasn't proven himself yet. Smoot is still a huge upgrade from what we had last season, and if we can keep Springs, then having Smoot, Rogers, Springs, and Taylor in the secondary shold be an upgrade for us. |

We did start with the defense were we need the most help, and hopefully will make another move or so on that side of the ball in FA the rest will be in the DRAFT (DE/DT). I'm not sure what you were watching with SMOOT? However, most people with just a little bit of football knowledge including Coach Joe Gibbs, see a decent corner that we need badly. He has great potential to have an outstanding year! Your point makes ZERO sense in my opinion! :spank: |

We have lots of 30+ DLinemen, and the right move is getting a young guy that could be good and stay around a while. that's what the draft and that #6 pick are for. |
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
Well heres my problem with what your saying, does Jeremiah Trotter ring a bell, he was an average player as a Redskin, but a dominant MLB for the Eagles, NFL players have a comfort level just like any other human being. Fred Smoot openly has said he didnt like being in Minnesota, hes a Redskin, those were Joe Gibbs words, and i have a feeling that Joe Gibbs is a better judge of talent than you are. Fred Smoot is going to surprise alot of people, the sad thing is it seems you have already forgotten after two short years, that Fred Smoot became a fan favorite, not for his name, but for his heart and his play on the field. I welcome back Fred Smoot, and will be right there saying "I told you so" when he plays like the old Fred Smoot, the Redskin Fred Smoot.
while i like smooty coming back, you assessment of trotter is way off base. trotter is good in the eagles system. but in my eyes one of the most over rated players in this league. |
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
yeah, we need springs to be the #1, cause rogers and smoot probably can't handle it.
but seriously, smoot played with a broken sternum... a BROKEN STERNUM! throwing up during half times cause of the pain, then coming back out and playing well. He had a couple bad years in minnesota, but very little of that got back here, because when he was here, he played hard, even when we were losing.
I like Smoot fine and admire his playing hurt, but, realistically, I don't expect him to be an answer to our burning questions. He'll be adequate and add depth but doesn't alleviate our need for a first rate CB. We still need a first rate cb, a good offensive tackle, and a five star DE or DT to get to the playoffs. Further, we have to acquire the above without giving up a good player. |
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
I really think alot of you guys have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
|
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
When Springs missed games, Rodgers played pretty solid covering opposing teams' number one WR. Even without Springs (with the assuption we'll sign or draft a CB to play the nickel spot) we should be ok.

you know, I think that Brittany Spears would benefit from rehab.

I disagree. Rodgers played aweful against #1 WR almost all year. He got burned time after time. He really regressed last season, in my opinion. I don't think anyone is real clear on where SS stands at this point, healty it would be nice to have him back. With the possible Fisher signing if we do end up with: Springs,Smoot,Rodgers,Fisher, Jimoh. Not sure we will make any more moves at CB. |
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
Who does Rodgers play for again ... Carlos Rogers was pressed into a No1 role before he was ready and people keep talking about the balls bouncing out of his hands tend to forget he isn't a WR he is a CB. He was however 14th in the NFL in passes defenced (ranked out of all defensive players).
Just because you get a lot of INTs does not make you a good CB case in point Walt Harris in San Fran....Whoopie he got 10 ints throughout the year lets ignore the point he was part of a pass defence giving up 223yds/game in the air. To me it sounds like despite the fact Harris might intercept it teams were still thowning at him and having sucess. And people go on how we should have drafted Antrel Rolle who had the same number of ints as Carlos and the Cards defence gave up 231yards/game in the air . You know what is intersting is the Broncos with Bailey back there still gave up on average 212 yards per game.... last year with all our dificulties gave uo 218 yards per game on average. I hate having to defend Carlos Rogers to Redskins fans but people really need to stop running round like the sky is falling |
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
What is going on around here? Who are these people and what are they talking about?
We should all be able to agree on these two things: one, our pass defense was unacceptable last year, two, it is now materially better. The fact that people are arguing both of these points in this thread makes me strongly believe the government needs to do more to remove lead from our drinking water. And one last thing. I have a cool name that's fun to chant and people still think I'm a loser, so there you go. |
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
People are blowing Carlos Rogers out of the water for absolutely no reason. I see someone in one thread ripping Carlos Rogers apart, yet talking about how we have to build through the draft. Guess what, a player in his 2nd year in the league makes mistakes. Rogers had some bad games, he let some players behind him. He also had some good games, there's a reason CBs are so important for GWs system. He lets them out there in 1v1 coverage and for being a 2nd year player Rogers did great. He made some mistakes, he made some great plays, and he dropped some balls. He was the only defensive player that was good enough to get himself in position to snag INTs.
|
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
I don't think he is that bad, but he isn't amazing. Give Rogers a year or two and I think he could be a solid #2 receiver.
|
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
First of all Carlos Rogers gets (almost) no love on this board. In fact, almost half the members don't bother to check how to spell his name. I think that's even worse than for Pierson Pr?l?. ;-) I think his career can go either way. He felt (along with a few others on the defense) like he was trying to close a big wound and only had band-aids. Understandably this, along with having to cover the #1 receiver all of a sudden, was too much for this second-year player to handle. But I do remember that he did a nice job his first year out there. (And he had better hands.) I also have to think they were telling him to play way off the receiver last year, to try to avoid giving up the big plays.
So I think of him as a very good rookie relief pitcher. Sometimes they're able to keep it up the whole year, but others crack in the post-season and are burned out and gone from the big leagues in a few years. I think if Springs can stay healthy for 13+ games this year (and I expect that to be the case) the defense will do just fine. And in that case I would expect Rogers to feel comfortable out there, knowing he only has to play his position (and he doesn't have to play the other team's #1 receiver.) Smoot is a great pickup. Minn wanted to get rid of him after Love Boat. (I think that if a guy is in that position it should be against the law for him NOT to do anything with the women.) He also lost a sibling towards the end of the year and I could see that also impacting his play at the end of the season. But that shouldn't impact next year. Adding him should also be a great help against teams which run a lot of 3-wide receiver sets. In addition I see him being a good lockerroom presence. And I hope he teams up with Portis to start hamming up the press conferences. |
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
Didn't Carlos have a hand injury last year (and came back after 1 game) - if so, wouldn't this help account for the drops of INTs (much like TO's drops at WR).

Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
first of all i started this thread to talk smack on smoot, NOT rogers. i think all rogers needs is a year or two, the D as a whole was dreadful.
who are the starting corners next year going from 1-4? heres what i think.. 1. whoever we aquire next 2. smoot 3. rogers 4. jimoh i think springs is gone to get a new number one. and i just dont see smoot sitting on the bench. not after we resigned jimoh. |

Who in FA could we have acquired that A) would have come without totally eating up our cap or B) been someone that wasn't up there in age. As far as defensive line is concerned, I think we can feel pretty safe that the Skins have a plan in place on addressing this with the draft. Hell, we might even get more DTs and DEs than we could ever expect if some of these trade scenarios pan out. |

If not: 1) Smoot 2) Rogers 3) Jimoh or drafted player. We resigned Jimoh simply on the basis of the fact he is an AMAZING special teams player. He came cheap and we saw last year the value or actually having a special teams we could count on. |
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
If you look at Smoot's play in Minn. it was a bad signing. If you look at his play here it was a good signing. If I'm correct when he played for us as a starter he lead the team in int's even over Baily ever year and I do not remember him getting beat all that often. At that time I think that we pretty much lined up our corners to who ever was in front of them and not on a certain player. So he was lining up against #1 WR's and not just #2 WR's.

Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
Honestly, what worries me the most is who is COACHING the secondary. Already, the players are talking about how their technique has changed since Jackson arrived. If I remember correctly, the secondary was a strong point in GW's first two years.
Anyone else remember that play of Taylor going up and knocking the ball away from Randy Moss? When was the last time we saw something like that? I'll bet the last time was 2005. Jackson is just a crappy coach. |
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
My only concern and reason for not being excited about his re-aquisition is his personal life.
I truly hope he has learned from his trouble in Minnesota and all of that is behind him. It's the kind of thing that can ruin a lockerroom and a season. If that had never happened, I'd be very excited about his return...but whenever I hear his name, I think of the Love Boat. |

Jerry Gray is the coach of the CBs, and i think having a ton of different coaches has everybody off base. We let Walker leave, and he turned UCLAs defense into a monster, god help us if Greg Blache leaves, although last year was a pretty big hick up, he has worked wonders with a lot of nobodys. |
Re: ok im gonna say it, cause nobody else will....
i really think walker was unsung but made a HUGE difference on the defense. there's no doubt he single handedly improved UCLA's defensive by leaps and bounds.
